For me he is not first and foremost the high notes. It's his energy and sense of humour that shines through in his singing. Listen to his recording of Ferrando in Cosi.
His contemporary, Lawrence Brownlee, absolutely outshines him in my opinion, not to detract at all from Florez's vocal ability. I was very disappointed not to find him on this list, yet it seems even the operatic world is susceptible to commercialism (*ahem* Erwin Schrott).
This is not a song where his voice shines. when compared to pov in this role something is very much lacking but in say.....Zelmira? OMG his agility is wonderful and you just cant find many voices who can sing that many e-flats in one night. its a totally differant voice type than the lyric tenors the public tends to love. His voice is small, light, and fast so stop comparing him to spintos and big lyrics. rate him against ppl like lawrence brownlee. someone who at least sings the same rep.
I wouldn't say he's a light tenor, and I don't have any doubt he's far better than Palacio, Alva and all these. He doesn't sound very virile, but he sings properly and always in full voice, doing things very few can do. I didn't hear Alagna's "Ah, mes amis!", and I don't dear to do it.
It is unfortunate for him that because of his success as Tonio he will always be compared to Pavarotti and he will always fall short of such a high standard.
For myself I can enjoy many tenors even though they are not, to my ear, as good as the very best .
Only one can be the very best in any role, but any number can be great without being the very best.
i rate florez, probably the best in the world at the present time. i have never found him anything near monotonous.watch the clips from la fille. masculine, senuous and virile.....he has it all. because he doesn't have to shout is he a bad singer? surely not.
At least he's a famous tenor today who can SING a high C (as opposed to shouting it.) There aren't that many!! I like his voice, he can be a bit monotonous but he uses it well and has lasted.
These idiots that have nothing better to do, than give thumbs down to positive comments and thumbs up to negative comments just drive me mad. Is it not possible to respect different opinions and show a little more consideration to the achievments of an artist? Are the directors of the Met, Covent Garden. Vienna Staatsoper, Scala and Paris, Berlin, Munich, Madrid etc., who had Florez singing in their houses for several years and doing so in coming years too, just stupid ignorants?
Like the previous commentator, I fully agree with your evaluation of Florez. When I heard him in the role of Tonio, the term "tenorino" came to mind immediately. If this performance is compared to Pavarotti's version when he was young, the difference is quite clear in terms of sensuality, virility, and charisma. To my mind and ear, Florez is no Wunderlich, Valletti, or Alva, not to mention Schipa and De Lucia. Still, he does have a pleasing voice, great agility, and an energetic, athletic style.
I totally agree with your assessment, and I know many people will disagree with you. I have sung with Aler, and I agree, he is very underrated, even though he has a TON of Grammys and awards.
TOO OVEREATED TENOR

John Aler more substance? But he never sings with full support! And he never had such brightness of sound and such brilliance in coloratura as JDF.

Funny list of "great Rossini-Tenors":
- Valetti: yes, off course, but a less attractive timbre. A great artist, a singer's singer.
- Alva? Rossini tenor yes. Great no (timbre! technique - aspirations!)
- Palacio? O. K., good second league.
- Araiza? Yes! Beautiful voice, but I prefer his Mozart and Donizetti.
- Matteuzzi - off course, but a less attractive voice.
- And Wunderlich??? A wonderful singer, but not Rossini
- But Maxim Mironov, hmm, yup, a good alternative - very similar vice, too.

Ditto on John Aler. And he sings ravishing French at that.
Personally I prefer Maxim Mironov.

I was wondering how come you have
put the version in Italian and not
the French version?
Enjoy the best light tenor the world has now! Absolutely beautiful and mesmerizing timbre!

Are you the pope or god or I don't know what, to just leave such a statement, and without any argument! Comments like yours are only annoying...

Listen to this singer and compare him to any famous tenor of the last 100 years who sang the same rep. There's you're argument.

this one would never even make my top 1000 list, his sound is too constricted for me ... but a lot of people like him - just not my cup of tea
