The thing is that this trick works with very specific angles. I've seen it happen and done it myself before. I never paid attention to "polygon cracks", but I think it might work better on corners.
The only instances I have seen of fire going through walls is the starting gate, and the door immediately behind Point A on Steel. The gate never looks as if the flames are through, but the door makes it quite obvious
i remember about a month ago, i was on dustbowl... and the match hadn't started yet, me and an enemy pyro were fuckin around, taunting and stuff, waiting for the gate to open... and he was running in circles firing his flamethrower.. and he got me!
only for about a second, but i was still on fire and lost health.... i still don't know how the fuck it happened >_>
I think it's a matter of map construction. I was on a modified 2fort where Pyros could shoot through tables and walls. I was killed from across a table, and a sentry nest was destroyed from underneath. The Pyro was at roughly a 45 degree angle to the wall, and it was like his flames passed through the edge, not through the wall itself. Hard to explain, should have taken a demo.
(as a mapper) i can say that the it cant pass through walls, but it can pass trough little tiny little holes as much as 1x1 pixel it a join between a floor and a door, or a static model
E.i. the Ground texture and a Rock and the rock will be a static model
I play the PS3 version. Pyro is GREAT on 2Fort for destroying Sentries near the enemy team's spawn and killing the Engies tanking them. Just get underneath the Sentry and fire upwards through the ceiling.
This video is still accurate, no need to discredit it. It's true that the Pyro's flame cannot pass though walls, but some floor and walls are not built as one large piece.
If you want, I would suggest a second test where different seems are tested. For example, if you burn under many starting gates, the seam itself will allow the fire though, thus it's possible to burn other team members before a match on the PC version (which gets updated constantly).
yes you can a pyro air blasted my own pee back at me after i chucked it at him also it reverses arrows, rockets, flare gun shots, stickies and pipe bombs
Okay. What you do is you stand side ways, against the wall. Essentially, guns fire from your right ear. I've killed plenty of people on Payload maps who are standing at the gate by running up against door frame and firing slightly towards the gate. I usually set them on fire, and if they don't move, I kill them, and then say "I win".
Yeah, the glitch might be fixed now but I haven't played in a while. Anyways, on certain walls, the flames will go through the wall/floor and hit whatever's on the other side. A real pain for engineers sometimes. There are actual screenshots of this happening by the way.
Why not do the test on actual maps in situations players actually complain about? Find a wall people say they can shoot through, try it, post. Simple.
Wrong way to prove/disprove the myth. In some surf maps, the glass that protects the walkway between team spawns does not block flames from burning and igniting people. Flames have higher difficulty burning buildings through walls. I haven't tested for any difference in anti-wall flames between backburner and normal flamethrowers vs buildings, because I prefer the normal flamethrower.
graveeking's comment, which is about the fact that it is pyro's TAUNT flame that goes through walls, is at the bottom of the list, so I made this comment.
That's just as bad as TV Mythbusters: because we can't duplicate it therefore it's false.
Fact is that flames would go through certain walls. Some examples are the "balcony" floor in pl_goldrush 1 near final cap and a wall next to the medkit in pl_goldrush 2 near final cap when first released. Both of these have since been patched.
yes but he can't recreat the entire map and make a test for himself so he goes into a controled enviroment of his own map wiht non moving bots and codes to create the machines
this glitch does exist just is not universal. there are certain specific areas that flames tend to travel through which can be exploited. it is not common and most have been patched but it still does exist. it pisses me off as engie when i'm trying to build and a pyro backburner flames me to death and the death cam zooms in to the floor below me. and no i wasn't buidling near the stairs
The way it WORKED was that you stood the right distance away from the wall and aimed in a downwardish direction. As near as I could tell, it happened because the particles would detect a collision with the floor and then ignore collisions with thin walls.
It has since been patched, but it DID work at one point. I know, because I would kill the other team through doors before the round started.
no no no you're doing it wrong... you have to get close to the door (or wall) shoot at it then back away then run at it really fast again while holding down the fire. plus i think valve patched it on pc (Mabye not?) cause i know it works on the xbox 360
if pyro stands too close to obstacle flamethrower won't work. if you'll go backwards holding fire button flamethrower starts to work again at some distance to obstacle. Now try to go to obstacle(door) again. Some particles suddenly catch enemy player standing too close to door. I usually do this trick to confuse enemy at start if i in BLU and if I'm in RED i just keep distance to doors.
It happens in corners. For instance, have someone set up a sentry or tele in the buildings opposite to the final cap point on goldrush, then walk under the protruding building and shoot up with your flamethrower. I've done this several times
Well the trick is you have to sort of dance around trying to get the flame to go through, and shake your crosshair a bit. It seems to work on corners.
Location: The offensive "forward upstairs" where the full metal spawns.
Situation: A pyro can shoot from the downstairs (where the tracks are) and shoot up through the ceiling above him and burn things where the full metal spawns.
Map: Goldrush, stage 2, 2nd point.
Location: From the defensive POV the left short stairs.
Situation: A pyro can shoot through the wall to where the half health and full ammo spawn on the other side of the wall.
I won't bother setting up a video response. But I know it's possible to destroy buildings through walls. On stage #2 of Goldrush, Last point, in the little join connected houses I usually build a teleporter there if I'm an Engineer. It gets destroyed through the walls, and I'm just like wtf?
Goldursh, 1st stage, room across from Red spawn, whwre BLU always ends up at, and by the 200 metal pick up, if thee is a teleporter there, you can set up a dispenser and have a pyro under it and burn everyone who comes through it, outside of the room.
You're firing at a single polygon with no breaks in it. In some maps it might be possible to shoot fire through cracks between polygons. A good example of this is the bridge in 2Fort, I've seen people shoot fire from beneath the bridge and burn others who are walking across it.
It's nice to know you can't shoot through a solid wall, but I'd like to see a test using a multi-part wall or through corners, perhaps even through an intentionally sloppily-made wall to see if fire can shoot through.
The thing is that this trick works with very specific angles. I've seen it happen and done it myself before. I never paid attention to "polygon cracks", but I think it might work better on corners.
