Yep, some manufactures fit plastic fenders. Renault also does it on some models, and the new SLS AMG has a plastic boot lid (rest of the body is aluminium) in order for GPS and other signals to easier make their way through.

The windshield was not cracked, therefore it absorbed a good amount of the impact. Also expect convertibles to fare more poorly because they loose structural integrity from having the top chopped.

@thefutureboom With the way convertible side air bags are designed (Generally, they are not curtain airbags), I don't think they would help too much with the head hitting B pillars anyway. Or perhaps the vehicle's computer did not deploy them based on this particular crash. You can see on the audi A4 2002-2005 model's crash test that the side air bags deploy only on the driver's side and not the passenger side based on the crash's trajectory.

@bobscoodles They are standard in this vehicle (and even in the previous generation convertible), but convertibles usually do not have side curtain air bags, so on most models they do not deploy in a frontal crash. Curtain airbags generally deploy in frontal crashes to prevent the head from impacting the B pillar. There is no B pillar to hit in this case.
thats how seat belts are made. Look on your seat belt there is a little sowed "pocket" on it on the bottom side where it bolts to the floor. That is a loop made specifically to rip off and give out 2-3 extra inches to the seat belt lenght so it doesnt stop you with full force. This sort of like guides you to hit the air bag and let it do its job.
Thats why those after market steering wheels with out air bag are so dangerous in uneducated peoples hands. Many don't address the loop so when the time comes it rips and smashes your face in your nice after market metal steering wheel.

I had a hard frontal crash with my BMW cabrio 8 yrs ago, and all airbags worked. It saved my life, as well as my friends.
I'm very greatful for German engineering :)
I still have a BMW.
