Well, both Keane and Redding had a 'going soft' episode. I think that was one of the points the show was trying to convey. If you do what you need to do to climb up in Oz, you mass up the guilt. But when you try to better yourself morally, you become less fit for surviving and staying on top in Oz. Even after 'going soft', Keane was still arguably the most skilled and deadly physical combatant in Oz. Just ask Julio Martinez.
It would have been something if on an eppy of Oz, Sister Peter Marie would have gotten the attention of some loudmouths by screaming out "HEEEEY YOUUUU GUYYYYYS" lol.
