In college you can do whatever you want without any problems as long as you dont try to make money off work you did in school. Trents professor probably told students to redesign a famous book so Trent picked Dracula. Just like my professor told us to redesign John Coltrane's album cover for A Love Supreme. Its just a exercise for students. But after college... you def gotta cover your ass.

In graphic designing, must one, such as yourself, have to take their own photos, and use their own words to create a graphic design? Or are these photos, and these words/quotes, given to you - and you just need to work with it? This question is based on the Child Abuse design that you depicted very well, at 0:42, and the Dracula Book Cover at 0:56.

Please let me know, this would help me very much on my decision about choosing Graphic Designing as a career. Thank you.!

Do you need to draw to be a graphic designer, i can't draw well, maybe sketches of logos and stuff but can't draw something like a person nicely. I'm very good at the photoshop, indesign and the other adobe creative suite programs.

in todays industry, its better if you know how to draw and have that talent, if you can draw itll give you a way better chance to get into graffic design, i recommend a tablet for your laptop/pc i have a bamboo one, its excellent. im also trying to become a future graphic designer.

mac is the industry standard, is there addon hardware or something that will let us draw into a mac? the next computer i will get will either be a pc laptop or a mac.

hmm personally i like windows/pc alot more, iv used macs, dont get me wrong they have some pretty nice features, and they look nice, appearance wize. but i think windows is so much more simple and easy, and i dont think all graphic designers are using macs, just saying. and if you do get a tablet i recommend a bamboo, cuz its real sick, takes some time getting used to like its alot different from paper but its nice.

Very normal design!!!You need to use more experimentation. The best designers, use markers, collages, and finally the software. You really ise too much software and too much illustration and photoshop. UGLY DESIGN!!!

If you are a freelance designer, then you have to be pretty on to it to have ongoing work and money as well. Make sure you hone your selling and communication skills as these are absolutely essential for getting new clients apart from the fact that you have to be bloody good at design too. Im looking to go into school for graphic design, something that I always wondered about was, where designers get fonts that they use? Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Well, there are a couple of answers. Firstly, there are a lot of font websites that designers use to download fonts that they can use in their designs, but for many logos the designer will create their own font (either by customizing an existing font, or just making a completely new one).

Well you could either buy software like Fontlab to make your own font, or if you only needed a custom font for a logo, then type the text you want to alter into Illustrator (or whatever software you have) and then choose the "create outlines" option. This transforms the text into vector format, which you can easily modify.

lol 'pixiecherries'. i was doing lettering by hand back in the 1997, ruler and scalpel. painstakingly hard but the results is amazing and felt a sense of achievement when all piece fit together in a highly professional way. i miss those days and i felt the lost of handcraft to cpu is a sad thing in my opinion. to me, the imperfection is perfect.

This is a great portfolio. I was married to a graphic designer back in the 1970's when everything was done by hand. I watched and learned from him. I am now a web designer. Back then you lettered by hand. You drew circles on vellum to calculate relative distance between objects. You used a compass, t-square, shape templates and graph paper. Hands on work is the best way to get better at it. Your portfolio is impressive. You are a very good artist.

Resdesigns are bad (and never used by the companies) Some logos are very good. First starbucks thins is your best, type layout needs work. Ambitiouse work but needs to be processed. Good luck!

Your portfolio is kind of all the same throughout from the beginning to the end. I do not see some variety. I think you can just abandon that over-texturized aspect of your design. I hate the design noise in typography or image. It is tiring.

I liked the posters you through together, however the logos were a bit of a confusion. I didn't really experience that "added benefit" from any of them, just kind of generic logos. I would pick out a few of your better ones and remove the others from your "portfolio." Just too bland. This is just a suggestion from one designer to another, and ONLY a suggestion. But seeing what you had at the beginning made the end seem like it came from a complete amateur.
