Well. I looked into all of these facts. I could not find one report of a suicide linked to this song on the internet, as beautiful as it may be, I do not think its name is justified.
@orphicgirl yes, I guess that might be right. With all the history surrounding it, it's strangely fascinating...for me anyway, history has been fascinating me since school. It's always interesting to know the context behind a song, the time it was written...
For me, it's not the song that gives me this weird feeling, it's the story surrounding it, people mysteriously killing themselves after hearing it. It has a depressing tone, yes, but I certainly wouldn't kill myself because of it...
@MystOfOblivion probably it has to do with the course of events during the thirties.. the time was horrible... people were sad and the lyrics... that would make some commit suicide... who was alive during the holocaust.
This doesn't make me want to kill myself, it's a fucking beautiful song, makes me glad that I'm alive to listen to it... Justin Bieber makes me want to kill myself.
So I met death today, he said exactly this "What the fuck is this shit?!?!? A Man cant have a fucking vacation anymore without a song coming out and ruining it. First it was "Gloomy Sunday" which might i say was actually a good jam, but then you gotta come out with "Baby" by Justin and then worst of all "Friday"!!! I just wanna relax jeez! No wonder Gloomy Sunday doesnt work. YOU'VE ALREADY HEARD WORST!!!" I put my gun down, patted him on the back and said "Im sorry to hear that..." :P
I believe that the depression this piece brings will no longer have the same effect like back in the old times. majority are no longer into classics. but don't worry, there's still an alternative. if you want to commit suicide, just buy bieber's album or just stalk him in the net. if you can't commit suicide, just were an "i love jb" shirt and parade your way outside and scream " I LOVE JUSTIB BIEBER!" and your neighbor will do it for you. tweet the results after
1:00... I have the same record, that keeps getting stuck, in the same spot, on my victrola... and my victrola, only plays, full volume... o_o *worried look* o_o and it's a 78rpm record. and i've played over, and over... thankfully I've not killed myself, and won't.
omg ppl grow up its just music >.< sheesh... the song doesnt make ppl commit suicide, that has to be a part of wat is in their head already, something that they were already contemplating, it does sound sad enough that ppl would put this on as their finale though... however it must have been something that they had already planned
Thank you very much for this. Now off to commit suicide... ( kidding! ;) Suicide is no laughing matter but people do not just out of the blue go commit suicide just beacuse they heard a song! Those people were obviously already depressed / suicidal and so therefore could very much relate to this...
Beautiful song. Filled with such strong meaning just so emotional and beautiful. This is what all music should sound like, filled with deep emotions that just get to you.
@mouthforwar17 i hope you die. i really do. don't you dare engourge people to taint the beauty and sarrow of this peice! (and i say that as a person who listens to a lot of metal.)
@GrimImpaler ok well that ur opinion but..u are an asshole..i just want you to know that..clearly theres 13 other people that agree with me so..im just gonna let it be at that
i've done it with lots of fine tuned distortion. it sounds awesome! i don't have a video camera yet to put it online. BUT YES, it does sound awesome. best i figured, it is is G/G#m. yes, i'll come up with something soon!
Seress did commit suicide in 1968, but most other rumors of the song being banned from radio, or sparking suicides, are unsubstantiated, and were partly propagated as a deliberate marketing campaign.[Taken from News article]
Rezso Seress was Hungarian. Hungarians have a reputation as being the gloomiest nation in Europe, as many of them had a pessimistic attitude and were clinically depressed. Gloominess, depression, and suicide have always been apart of this culture. They also had the highest suicide rate in the world, shown by a study. Just a little history before you come to the conclusion that once this song was played, mass amounts of people jumped out the window because it triggered them to do it.
@repeatdreaming Do not post what you do not know. Hungary was the most oppressed nation in the buffer states by the Soviet Union. I know this, I am an immigrant.
Gloomy Sunday with one hundred white flowers, I waited for you, my dear, with prayers from church, Sunday morning that drives away dreams, the cart of my sorrow returned without you, since then Sundays are always sad, tears are my only drink and my bread is my sorrow..
Last Sunday, my dear, come, there will be a priest, a coffin, catafalque and hearse-cloth, then, too, flowers will await you, flowers and - a coffin, under trees with flowers will be my last journey, my eyes will be open to see you once again, don't be afraid of my eyes, I will bless you even in death.

The whole music and the accords are in C minor, and there is not response to any musical sentence in this song.

i didn't read the words because i didn't want to hear about all the dreadful things right before i go to bed. i read a few, the lady who gassed herself, the man who jumped and the man who shot himself in the head. .___.
but if you close your eyes and listen to just the music, it's really quite lovely<3.

Love has died!
The world has come to its end, hope has ceased to have a meaning

Meadows are coloured red with human blood
There are dead people on the streets everywhere
I will say another quiet prayer:
People are sinners, Lord, they make mistakes...
The world has ended!

Nagyon szép zene, megható és elgondolkodtató is egyben.
Örülök hogy egy magyar zenének is ekkora neve van bárhol a világon...

this is beautiful<3
i didn't read the words because i didn't want to hear about all the dreadful things right before i go to bed. i read a few, the lady who gassed herself, the man who jumped and the man who shot himself in the head. .___.
but if you close your eyes and listen to just the music, it's really quite lovely<3.
