No individual was forced to "trade in" their clunker under this program. For all of those screaming that the government coerced this behavior, remember that the Big Three all supported this program, including our off-shore competitors. Each person who traded in their car exercised their free right to dispose of their personal property in this manner. Salvage parts do not stimulate the economy since obviously it postpones new car purchases (that's why the engines were destroyed). Good scrap parts here, what I can see (there was a scrap yard next door until two years ago -- now, it's low-cost housing) do help.
