Tom is neither gay nor straight - he’s really not very sexual at all, although he is quite capable of having a somewhat physical relationship with a man or a woman - his need to be close to Dickie is not sexual.....
@bachfan2005 The Tom Ripley from this fil version is definately gay. It's an astute observation that Tom is not a very sexual being, because he isn't. However fused with all his love and obsession with Dickie, and his opulent lifestyle, is a concrete physical attraction. Tom can't have a physical relationship with Cate Blanchett's character because he is gay, and later goes on to develop a homosexual relationship with the Kingsley character.
i am not the type of guy who say this men is good looking, i am totally straight, but i have to admit Jude Law is a very very good lookin motherfucker ^^
There is people that posses such an intoxicating charisma / charmed life. Once you meet them you become addicted and you can't imagine a life without them. This movie captures that perfectly.
Well spotted TN!I also think that the train is a symbol for the voyage that Tom has embarked on moving ever forwards to its inexorable conclusion but that his placing his head on Dickie's shoulder is also simply revealing of his yearning to share some intimacy..his predicament is an overwhelming sense of separation and loneliness which being close to Dickie seems to appease...he lives vicariously through D's joie de vivre, high self esteem ,social recognition and success in relationships.
@violinvixen08 -- I believe he means the way Tom was staring at their reflection in the window. If you look closely, he seems to be aligning their faces, which I think is another of Tom's ways of "becoming" Dickie for a moment.
@lesshair Yeah you're right - Tom is trying to kiss Dickie through the reflection as he is in love with him. There is some homo-eroticism here. That's all; no other deep meanings. :)
@ravrik exactlyyy.... he was aligning their lips together, and snuggling his head on him; he was in love with dickie and jealous of everyone around him.... he didn't wish to "become" dickie, he just fell into his life after he killed him, (half in self defense, and not quite undeserved; dickie was a killer himself and not a good person)
@tnilfo That's a good point but I always thought that more than the head Tom is aligning specially their lips, as if kissing Dickie. It novelty to nobody that Tom is gay. The scene in the bath is there to prove it.
@curvaceouskiller452 Glad you like it. I love this movie too, although I didn't appreciate it until I watched it a second time and read the book. I don't have the bathing clip, but next time I watch the film I'll grab it and put it up.

Me, too, but I do not suddenly hear cool saxes and dissolve to a cool Italian club, though.

@tnilfo Hmm for me it looks more like Tom was trying to kiss Dickie through the reflections on the mirror.
