Imperial Bedroom was the beginning of the end for the once most gifted songwriter of rock. He stared doing his Cole Porter ##$#@ and spoiled everything for me (ha). I've seen this guy perform Funny Valentine before 1980 and it was great and then with Burt Bacarach and it was only good. Also, after the beginning of the end (this song is mediocre) women became his main admirers. Case closed. Is it is well-known; I have the best collection of songs on Utube, & that is why I can write like an ass
I thought there were a bunch of sour notes (like some comments have said) the first time through; then the second time it didn't seem as bad (more in agreement with others). EC's harmonies etc. aren't pretty-pretty like most pop music, so maybe you have to kind of "get it in your ear." The video is out of sync with the audio, but it's a great chance to hear a live performance.
Thanks for the video! Did you know that Squeeze, from the same genre of music, is going to be touring North America in the Summer of 2007 and the UK later in the year? Tickets for the North American dates are available on the Ticketmaster website.

i'm noticing that his songs have potential but either he composed his songs sloppy for a rough draft and didnt fix em, hired sloppy musicians, or just doesnt give a damn about sound checks and quality. plus his singing could be way better
True that. Elvis Costello HAS potential. However, his body of work is no match for that of mattgonzales892; YouTube armchair critic extraordaire. Can't wait for mattgonzales892's new release! Guaranteed to be an instant classic, just like the rest!
You either get it or you don't. Somebody brought a recorder into the theater so we could see and hear this gem. Don't criticize the quality! Don't watch it if you don't like EC. Your comments expose you as an airhead.
@chrism823 Why are you an airhead on a G string? It's starts with your love of classical almost to the exclusion of anything else so you are not one to judge anything pop or rock. And then you Love I can see clearly now by Johnny Nash - a simple catchy likable song for a few listens but it's got no real substance.
@chrism823 But if you want to see the best rock visit my site cause you need to be schooled. Yeah I'm shaking that with your pedigree how could I ever defend myself against your upcoming barbs. Look, it's all opinion and I just don't like your fuckin' snobbishness and insensitivity when you criticized that guy and now he is on life-support on the hospital.
@11xzxzxz I shouldn't have called you an airhead. You're right, the first 5 records are great. Then I guess he changed. I apologize--it looks like 3 years ago I was the airhead.
@chrism823 Oh you didn't call me an airhead I was just defending someone I don't know. OK so you do think Elvis was great ... and with you classical and jazz background I understand why you might like later Elvis but really this is a song that does nothing for me and it might be the jazz and sound that my grandparents would like. My taste is not diverse and I am fuckin proud that I just like rock and pop (except for Coltrane or Davis..
@11xzxzxz I don't really like the Johnny Nash tune that much. I just used that video to learn to sing it. I retired that one a long time ago. Dude, I like punk, jazz, classic rock, Nick Drake. The whole gamut.
Nick Drake is pretty good but these are the pantheons I like: The Replacements - Let It Be, Tim, Pleased to Meet Me / Neil Young - Neil Young, Everybody Knows this is Nowhere, Zuma, Harvest, After the Goldrush /Buffalo Springfield - Buffalo Springfield Again/ Love - Forever Changes (has every kind of music genre..)
The Move - Shazam (later ELO) /Smokey Robinson and the Miracles - Greatest Hits /Graham Parker and the Rumour - Heat Treatment, Squeezing Out Sparks, Howlin' Wind /
@chrism823 Marshall Crenshaw - Field Day and Marshall Crenshaw /Them (early Van Morrison)/ David Bowie - Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust / Elvis Costello - My Aim is True, Get Happy, This Years model/ The Velvet Underground and Nico Roxy Music - Siren / Elton John - Tumbleweed Connection / Van Morrison - Astral Weeks, Moondance
Beatles - anything but the lousy Abbey Road and White Album
Really? If you don't know what you're talking about shut the F up. Read, don't write.
