It looked great from the audience. All they could see was some lights on aplatform, and then some balloons went up. Why didnt he just do "Is THIS your card?" from 1/4 mile away?

Blackstone's mistake was probably agreeing to do the show in the first place. You can't just throw a spectacle like that together overnight.

This was the result of trying to marry a great illusionist to a shmaltzy production number on a sports field! Harry was normally brilliant - I feel guilty for laughing at this fiasco!

in all fairness to Blackstone Jr, the 1987 Miami Orange Bowl queen's dress was stuck, in the prop, this made it difficult for her exit the illusion right away...the lights flashed on the plexi-glass, she is seen trying to pull dress free. Also the football field grass was wet & marsh-like from the large rain-storm the night before, the opening box balloons were most likely built by the show producer NOT blackstone jr team.

Probably. i did a stage show once and even though nothing went out of order for my routines i got stuck with a new tech crew and they were just off with everything... music, lights, spotlights. It was no ones fault but if i had a good rehearsal i could of caught all that ahead of time... so after that i don't book stage shows without rehearsal

The great Harry Blackstone Jr. was among the best illusionists who ever lived! As it happened, he was doing brand new tricks and due to the teams using the field for extra practice, he had no time to rehearse ANY of his effects! This video doesn't do the great man justice!

He _was_ Harry Blackstone, Jr. A legendary magician throughout the second half of the 20th century. Unfortunately, he has since gone to the Great Retirement Home In The Sky. But, his widow Gaye is still semi-active in the stage magic profession. For instance, she was co-producer of the recently (and criminally) cancelled "Masters of Illusion" television show.

I've had some bad shows..where something that you TRIED to plan for, rehearsed a zillion times screws up anyway...it's embarrassing as hell. All of a sudden your NOT so magical anymore.

Oh man!!

That's why illusions are harder than sleight of hand (that's not me talking, it's Denny Haney!); because with sleight of hand you just have to do your part right, with illusions you have to be in sync with a dozen other people, if they do something wrong, you have to try to make it look good. Everyone remember harry Blackstone was GREAT! and anyone can have a bad show.

We hear one of the smirking guys on this clip saying : "Please everybody try to remember Harry Blackstone Jr. for the great magician that he was and not this horrible show" .... so why dredge up this old clip and post it on YouTube for millions to watch and jeer ? EXACTLY. The assistants make a few errors, and everyone thinks "this magic guy on stage" is some hack. Personally, I enjoyed watching. How would you have reacted in his position? Probably not this well. This is classic, old-school, The-Show-Must-Go-On theatre mentality. Bravo.
