It all depends on the horse and distance. I've seen Quarter Horse/Thoroughbred match races go either way. Sometimes the TB wins, sometimes the QH. QH tend to run better at shorter distances and with TB's it depends on the horse.
yeah the fastest are usually quarter horses but they cant maintain that speed for long distances. they have short bursts of speed but their speed quickly dies down. thoroughbreds arny quite as fast but can keep a steady pace for longer distances. thats why when you race a quarter horse and a thoroughbred its not usualy a fair race. the quarter horse will start out in the lead and the TB will be close behind and when the QH dies down then the TB will get ahead and sometimes wins.
@mafia1953 arabs are good at cross country. and they were used to improve the thoroughbreds. almost every good racing thoroughbreds got some arabian in him. and quarter horses are called that cuz they're the fastest to the quarter mile.
im going to pony camp in august the 11th for 4 days were gonna go to the beach and go bowling i am riding rupert and we are gonna canter on the beach and we are having a bbq and lots more! we are also entering in a competition

I could not agree with you more. A bunch of people are saying how cruel horse racing is now with Eight Belles, Go Between, and George Washington all gone. Horses were bred to run and enjoy it.

I am sure your horse has gone out of your control at some point, and you needed some extra stuff to keep him straight. You never know what a horse will do, you may have an idea but they can do anything. And a whip can help keep them straight.
@carlykaiser a whip never can straight a horse out, it just causes a bigger problem than whats at hand...I've had two horses that have had whips used on them and now they are scared to death of them, I have to becareful with anything in my hand that even remotely looks like a whip. Whips are just as bad as those people who put those god aweful shoes on the Walkers.

@WestlifeFan1995 jocks don't have the legs obviously because of their position. And whips really don't hurt. I test them on myself (my bare legs) and it's basically nothing. Just pressure is all it is. Horse skin is way tougher than a human's.

@hijlaa you know nothing about racing do you? some horses need the whip to give that bit extra because (like humans) there are some lazy sods that need an extra bit of encouragement. and are you saying 'no whips' for ALL racing? or just flat or national hunt? some horses have a tendency to hang left/right, a couple of slaps across it's hindquarters usually sorts that problem out. i won't go into how the whips are made to hurt the horse as little as possible, not like the whips of old.

i think your right.I know lots about horses because my mom had a horse when she was growing up and because my mom and dad used to live together but they got divorced but my dad is selling our good horses to the person thats moving in and he and his wife love animals and we only had one bad horse well i woudnt call him bad but he was very good at first but since we havent spent as much time with him hes scared of my dad.

Lovely, from an owners viewpoint - this is what racings about. To all the ignorant and uninformed, go and check out trackwork one morning. In Australia we are the most regulated and governed section of all equine disciplines - my horse wins on heart, not steroids or performance enhancing drugs. More Eventing horses are injured per year than racehorses. If its about greedI love seeing him out there giving 10000% - they run on courage and win on heart.

i own an ex racer and i'm considering a career in horseracing. i board at a stable with a racetrack, and whenever i let her go, she flies. it's completely obvious that she loves running. that's why i don't understand people who say that the horses hate it, and that it's only for our entertainment. it's in her heart, i know it is. she loves to run.

Horses are being slaughtered, but they are NOT just race horses. Dressage horses, jumper horses, carriage horses - none is safe from this horrid fate. As in every sport, every country... there are people looking to bring in money and people who actually care about their horses. To generalize or say that most breeders, jockeys, racers, betters, have no concern for the horses is just plain childish. There are always dangers in every sport, and this one is no different.
Why don't you show the many thousands of horses that are slaughtered because they can't return a profit. Horseracing is all about money and ego and all involved are complicit to the inherit cruelty that goes with it. By the way, they;ve banned horseracing in Israel. Why? because it's cruel and exploitive. Shame we don't have some of their wisdom
that happens in every horse discipline. don't single out racing. not all racers go to slaughter. horses are really expensive. to be honest, why pay to keep a horse who can't be ridden if he/she's going to stand in a field for the rest of their life, rotting away? most of these horses become extremely skinny and abused. there are very few places who will take in unridable horses.
i'm not all for slaughter, but i have to say that watching an abused, neglected horse with pain in his eyes hurts me deeply. over here, every ridable horse is sold to a riding facility of backyard and becomes a lovely riding horse. many go on to do very high level shows.
This is an amazing video, my friends and family are in the horse racing business, to all those that think we just get rid of our horses like their nothing, your wrong, we retrain them and they help teach kids how to ride and take care of horses. You're quite wrong. Most racehorses are retired to the breeding farm, and those that aren't are usually retrained for something else. Stop being so naive, very, very few racehorses go to slaughter - and not because they lose races, get injured, or go lame.

But don't you think steeplechasing is a bit cruel? I don't mind flat racing but just asking (I'm not a horse expert). Are some races a little bit too long for the animals? Because they look so exhausted after they raced!
I don't think steeplechasing is cruel either, not that much difference between it and show jumping. And no, I don't think the races are too long either, many of these racehorses are bred specifically for stamina and are meant to run two miles or more. Now if you were to take a sprinter and race them long then that horse would be tired and not finish well. So some races are too long for some horses but perfect for others.
Steeplechasing isn't cruel, it's dumb. Horses are perfectly capable of galloping up to obstacles and making it over. All flat races used to be in two to four mile heats, so the distance is no problem. They might get a little worn out, but they love it.
There's nothing more beautiful than a horse putting his heart into what he loves. It makes me sad to see so many "dark side" videos on youtube that make it look so horrible. Thanks for posting a positive one!

i think your right.I know lots about horses because my mom had a horse when she was growing up and because my mom and dad used to live together but they got divorced but my dad is selling our good horses to the person thats moving in and he and his wife love animals and we only had one bad horse well i woudnt call him bad but he was very good at first but since we havent spent as much time with him hes scared of my dad.

Lovely, from an owners viewpoint - this is what racings about. To all the ignorant and uninformed, go and check out trackwork one morning. In Australia we are the most regulated and governed section of all equine disciplines - my horse wins on heart, not steroids or performance enhancing drugs. More Eventing horses are injured per year than racehorses. If its about greedI love seeing him out there giving 10000% - they run on courage and win on heart.

good someone is thinking straight i wonder if any one thatsay that racing horses is cruel actually meat the other people in the bis that care about the horse like me and my grandfather we have all of our horses that raced some did awesome and some not so great but we still went to all of there races and cheered them on no matter wat and now they are all living out the rest of there lives at the home they were born at my house

we have six horses 4 exracers 1 yearling that is going to race and my other horse sky she is a pinto paint who was abused at the age of to by her former owner i would give my life for all of them

i own an ex racer and i'm considering a career in horseracing. i board at a stable with a racetrack, and whenever i let her go, she flies. it's completely obvious that she loves running. that's why i don't understand people who say that the horses hate it, and that it's only for our entertainment. it's in her heart, i know it is. she loves to run.

I wish those who think racing was cruel could get to work with racehorses....and see the love, and caring, and hard work that goes into making them loved and happy.
Racehorses love to run, love the attention those of us who have worked with them know very well. Please do not judge everyone by the bad you hear, for that is inherent in any sport, the ownership of any animal, not just racing.

kk after reading ur comments i have 2 agree with carly on all of these horse racing isnt steroids and drugging. Not all race horses go to the slaughter very few actually. its not cruel if the horses dont want to run they wont soo its there choice really. Yess horses do go to the slaughter house its bad but ppl r trying 2 stop it. Ne way luv the video and this music is from titanic isnt it. I got to play it on my oboe.

I ride track work and am a racing photographer.
I am in the process of getting my farm up and running.
Its for retired race horses and horses that have been hurt on the track!
We have stables and Paddocks around the property.
I cant wait till its up and running.

Horses are being slaughtered, but they are NOT just race horses. Dressage horses, jumper horses, carriage horses - none is safe from this horrid fate. As in every sport, every country... there are people looking to bring in money and people who actually care about their horses. To generalize or say that most breeders, jockeys, racers, betters, have no concern for the horses is just plain childish. There are always dangers in every sport, and this one is no different.

Why don't you show the many thousands of horses that are slaughtered because they can't return a profit. Horseracing is all about money and ego and all involved are complicit to the inherit cruelty that goes with it. By the way, they;ve banned horseracing in Israel. Why? because it's cruel and exploitive. Shame we don't have some of their wisdom

Nice - but you forgot the behind the scenes part.. The steroids, illegal drugging the horses, over breeding, injuries straight to slaughter, etc.

that happens in every horse discipline. don't single out racing. not all racers go to slaughter. horses are really expensive. to be honest, why pay to keep a horse who can't be ridden if he/she's going to stand in a field for the rest of their life, rotting away? most of these horses become extremely skinny and abused. there are very few places who will take in unridable horses.

i'm not all for slaughter, but i have to say that watching an abused, neglected horse with pain in his eyes hurts me deeply. over here, every ridable horse is sold to a riding facility of backyard and becomes a lovely riding horse. many go on to do very high level shows.

This is an amazing video, my friends and family are in the horse racing business, to all those that think we just get rid of our horses like their nothing, your wrong, we retrain them and they help teach kids how to ride and take care of horses. Horse Racing is not cruel,the horses love to do it, they would fight the jockeys, and wouldn't have their ears pricked forward. thank you carlykaiser for the vid. 5/5

all of you are stupid.Most race horses get sent to slaughter after racing. Mainky becuase if they dont beat the time by ever 4 seconds, get injured,and go lame....race horses life may be nice for the first few years..until they are like 4 or younger....until they are slaughtered.

You are stupid. Not most. the vast.... VAST majority are sent to a farm, to have babies, and run around in a huge paddock.
Or sold to owners who will train them as jumpers, like my horse.

You're quite wrong. Most racehorses are retired to the breeding farm, and those that aren't are usually retrained for something else. Stop being so naive, very, very few racehorses go to slaughter - and not because they lose races, get injured, or go lame.

But don't you think steeplechasing is a bit cruel? I don't mind flat racing but just asking (I'm not a horse expert). Are some races a little bit too long for the animals? Because they look so exhausted after they raced!

I don't think steeplechasing is cruel either, not that much difference between it and show jumping. And no, I don't think the races are too long either, many of these racehorses are bred specifically for stamina and are meant to run two miles or more. Now if you were to take a sprinter and race them long then that horse would be tired and not finish well. So some races are too long for some horses but perfect for others.

Steeplechasing isn't cruel, it's dumb. Horses are perfectly capable of galloping up to obstacles and making it over. All flat races used to be in two to four mile heats, so the distance is no problem. They might get a little worn out, but they love it.
