Playing fast can be good and technical, but tone and sustain mean alot as well. I had the priveledge of seeing Stevie Ray when he was still alive and he was great. Eddie Van Halen when he was young and hungry was phenomnal live as well. Vai, Zakk are great no question. Most of these guys have been around for a good long while. A lot of the best young guitarist now are from Europe and Japan like Jani Liimatainen, Syu, Gentaro Satomura, Takayoshi Ohmura, etc.

The reason why SRV is the best from the list and of all times cause he couldn't read music or notes and he never played how someone told him and he never had it already prepared in his head! Satriani,Vai,Petrucci they just play fast with no feeling and all they do is study music and take lessons,and they never make any improvisations at all! Always the same!
