Yelp is a bad business model. It encourages people to judge other people...often time with a lot of malice. It starts out with good intention, but have been hijacked by a lot of mean spirited people.
Small Businesses for the most part hate Yelp...and most are desperate to find an alternative. Yelp is destine to fall because its business is base on fear and intimidation.
Once you own a business, thanks to Yelp, you'll experience the amazing power of petty and mean spirited people who knows how to write well and get away with destroying people's dream without having to answer for it. These malicious people are the backbone of Yelp.
Yelp filtered 75% of the 5-star reviews about Image Perfection, a small big-screen TV repair business in the SF Bay Area. As someone who helps the owner with the admin facets of the biz, I know the reviews were written by real customers - I spoke with them when they called about the problems their TV's were having. Yelp does an injustice to this and other small-business owners whose clientele have nothing but good things to say about them. It also does a disservice to those who read its reviews.
@jmacmedia if Yelp "filtered them out" how did you come up with the number 75%? Does Yelp tell the businesses which reviews they filter out and which ones they post?
I own a small business that was put up on Yelp by the well meaning of a client. Since then, Yelp sales reps have been calling me incessantly about paying for advertising and each time I refuse my reviews get filtered out. I've also been approached by Yelp "elite" users offering to do reviews for me for money. My business has spread from word of mouth for 8 years and I don't need Yelp whatsoever so they can kiss my ass. I don't even tell my clients about Yelp, if one of them wants to post ok.
"I love Yelp. Trust me, Yelp does not lie. Yelp does not extort money from merchants. Yelp never deletes reviews that suckers I mean people took a lot of time to write. You can trust me" said Bernie Madoff.
yelp doesn't list a positive review i gave to a business even though i've posted more than one review on another business AND i have a picture posted for my profile, BUT they allow some bitch who doesn't have a pic posted of herself to post a negative review on the business i posted a positive review for and even gave a COMPLIMENT to the person that gave the NEGATIVE REVIEW! and guess what?? the negative reviewer never even purchased the services of the person they reviewed!!
they won't post the positive reviews many of us put up for a company where someone was outright slandering someone's business and they don't communicate with you at all.
they say they have a filtering system but don't define it. our positive reviews were up for about a week or so and then they were gone. we log into our accounts and it shows our reviews but not when we look up the business outside of logging in. this company needs to go down!
That's true about what you said about the BBB being as bad as Yelp. Whenever I see a BBB sticker on a merchant's window I know there's a good chance the merchant is a double talking, dishonest seller I may not want to do business with.
Yelp sucks. Period.
