But seriously it's a RPM controller (e.g. speed of the record, which also alters the pitch). I know this because I'm a DJ although I don't use vinyl. :P

I used to have a record player similar to this when I was a little kid. Mine was from the late 80's to early 90's. If I remember correctly, these Fisher-Price record players were made by Sony.
