@ForgetaboutFreeman it has its origins in older comics. back then you couldnt have violence against a woman in a comic, thats why jean grey was 'hands off', same with the invisible woman, they werent brawlers they fought from a distance. even in batman; in an old version originally bruce's mom died of a heart attack after the mugging because they werent allowed to have her being shot. its just something that caught on.
I would venture a guess, in that they didn't want the females to be "dumb" and/or too powerfully fighting types. So a combo of super smarts, derived from psychic abilities was the answer. Niko can kick butt, but is still feminine. Same for Jean, Troi, etc.
Some of the voice acting could use some more work, but the animation is superb for an 80's cartoon. It's a lot better than Thundercats in the looks department.
@IshidaTheQuincy They had a combination of voice talent - some of it veteran voice actors used to the 80's "style" (Doug Pries & Earl Hammond worked on Thundercats, for example), & the rest were primarily stage and Broadway actors (this was Orbach's FIRST attempt at animation) One of the guys who did a lot of the "filler" voices (civilians, Crown Agents) was the creator's brother, who...well, they could get around SAG requirements by making use of him.
@IshidaTheQuincy Another bit of trivia is that Peter "Speed Racer" Fernandez was the voice director for the series. The Queen was voiced by his former colleague, Corrine Orr (best known voice role was "Trixie")
I just hate that dead space door technology, it gets you stuck in the same room with the enemy and when all enemies are dead its like "oh look, i just found open button on myself, how silly of me to leave you alone in a dark room filled with bloodthirsty monsters".
Why current cartoons can't be that cool? These were the ones I grew up with and they still look so great to me. Now, there's just a bunch of silly characters that make u think they're cool just for being gross. No imagination at all. No wonder why most of the children will become retarded adults, braindead and dull. Some of them seem jaded already. Thanks for uploading this stuff. Memories....
@ForgetaboutFreeman Keep in mind, Galaxy Rangers was made in 1985, pre-dating Firefly by 15 years. Rather flattering of you to mistake it for a contemporary series - it has aged pretty well.
The Star Wars style is also very understandable. Most of the shows writers were with Del Ray, who were in charge of the Star Wars Expanded U of the era. Brian Daley of the Han Solo novels and Star Wars radio show was one of the head writers.
@Allronix I don't see why you have to bring up Firefly as a successor to this show. The only animated show that sort of predated it was Cowboy Bebop since that they're low-key(realistic) space westerns w/ moral ambiguous characters. There's always been a pedigree of Space Westerns throughout decades part of the past century. Like Buck Rogers, Starangers, Captain Harlock, Fireball XL5, DC's Green Lantern..even Star Trek' & Wars are space westerns. Galaxy Rangers falls into this category.
@Diakron79 True. Firefly is just the latest to come down the pike. It's also embedded itself in the fannish culture to the extent that people seem to think Joss invented the genre. I also call Firefly a successor in a tongue-in-cheek manner. Mandell & Whedon had a lot of the same issues when production, wanting character development, mytharc, & high-end writing. They got episodes out of order, demands they "tone it down," good ratings in the wrong demographic, & ultimately screwed by network.
@Allronix But Wheeled Warriors, Transformers, Exosquad & anything I left out had the same issues Firefly had, so really this show is no 'sole' kindred spirit. to Firefly. At the risk of sounding self-righteous, it annoys me when Fan cults can be so immature when it comes to over-hypes & blatant praises. I like Firefly myself but it isn't a holy sacred cow of SF western. It's just one of the gems.
@Diakron79 Never said it was. One of the best GR fanfic writers calls herself "Jayce" for crying out loud. I'll admit that I like the series, the setup, the universe, and ESPECIALLY the fandom. (I work in over a dozen) GR fanfic tends to avoid a lot of BS and put out some wonderful reading. I recommend Ann-Kathrin Kniggendorf, Red Witch, andf Bruinhilda to start with.
@Allronix I'll take it under consideration. It's just that I got this love-hate relationship with fandom. I had bad luck running into fanfic stories that are overzealous, crappy, and full of BS. I also ran into ones such as superhero stories that seem to be good reading but are histrionic and ridiculous due to deviation of text & character overuse. Batman is a perfect example of this b/c I stay away from it like a wild virus. But I'll give GR fanfics a try.
Sorry guys, I've checked it, this is the real animation of the series. I used to watch it when I was a kid, but I haven't recalled it being that good until now.
"Let my shit go,and my planet will reward you well!" ;) But seriously, the animation is way too good for a series in the early 90s, looks more like a theatrical movie or something.
Oh, you'll be surprised. See, we have amazing abilities we can use, but have been conditioned while growing up to believe there's nothing.....no alien life, no higher plains of existence, no abilities of the mind......only taxes and a six-foot hole in the ground.
You'll be surprised if you simply know what to look for and look close enough.
id never even heard of this show before until today. reminds a bit of sabre rider and the star sherrifs but has some star wars-like elements thrown in for good measure. entertaining stuff. thanks for the upload.
@GoinDownToJunkieTown It was actually on at the same time as Saber Rider, and the Star Wars elements have a lot to do with the fact that the folks writing the series also worked on the early Star Wars Expanded U. Brian Daly of the Han Solo novels and the Star Wars radio show was one of the head writers.
@ihaveyourex *Snerk* Hell, all three of the gents were good-looking. Niko got an awesome front-row seat.
And wouldn't it be something if they ever went Live-action? I'd figure, mash "Phoenix/New Frontier" and "Psychocrypt" for a quick and dirty Big Damn Movie
conceptually thats what it is the fact you referenced firefly the short lived tv show of the same premise means you like the idea but cant call it since its older but the idea is still relevant today
There were male tele-paths in some of the Star Trek The Next Generation episodes. In Babylon 5 they had the whole Psy-Core (Remember Lester? Creepy) Dont forget - vulcans have telepathic ability (Spock's performance at the end of Star Trek 6 - The Undiscovered Country)
there was a just bug in the scenario. Nowadays, they'd just shoot the aliens first pretending they had weapons of mass destructions and ask questions second... man l love the americans.
you my friend! are EPIC!
