When Nashville, Tennessee finally got a Urban/ R & B Station on FM, in the fall of 1982, I hear this song on WQQK/92Q. About 8 years later, I was working at the station, playing this song on the "Quiet Storm". It was a Pop Hit at College Radio Station WVCP-FM 88.5 in Nashville at the time it was released. This song crossed over from the R & B Charts to the Pop/Adult Charts. These days, I haven't heard Melba do any more R & B/Pop Songs. Kashif knew how to make a hit.

Moore returned to the Newark Public Schools and student taught at the Pershine Avenue Elementary School. As a teacher, Moore began to perform with other teachers that formed a cultural performance group called Black Voices. In 1968, Moore began to work at various studios in Manhattan where she provided background vocals for the likes of Frank Sinatra and Aretha Franklin. While working at one such session, Moore was encouraged to audition for the Broadway
I think Melba Moore is a great singer. But she would have had much more success in her career if she had not continued to record over and over again uninspiring totally forgettable uptempo crap like this boring ass song which do not stand the test of time. Why didn't someone give this talented lady some decent music to work with?.
@nayteb Think I know quite a bit about soul music, I know enough to recognize crap when I hear it. Sorry stand by my opinion the majority of what Melba Moore recorded in the 80's was crap that one would be hard pressed to recall today. There were just a couple of jewels that shined and a mountain of crap she wasted her talents on.
@waynegreer72 bro I understand everyone has their opinions but just take a look at the consensus of these comments. That should be proof enuff but still this is when she made the transition to dance music and she had a good production team behind her mainly Kashif and Paul Lawrence Jr. These were premiere producers in the game at that time. Check out her discography and see her chart positions. This particular song here was a gem and will definetly stand the test of time. Check out the posts..
ARCHIE THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL OF YOUR POSTINGS. THIS KIND OF MUSIC MAKES ME SOAR INTO A GOSPEL FRENZY. MELBA IS SO UNDERRATED AND CAN SING HER FACE OFF. THE BUBBLE GUM MUSIC OF TODAY MAKES MY HEAD POP AND SWIM...LOL. BLESSINGS ALWAYS!
Melba's voice is so unbelievable and her songs are just as great. We can't even compare any of these so-called singers we have today to her. She is a legend!
@desiredqued LOL, you were saying "can someone post a decent version" I was trying to get you to check out (chosen1601's channel) (again, no offense ArchieGe)

My sis brought me home a copy of this album and a signed poster of MM i must have come home everyday for months and played one side of the album Keeping my lover satisfied and Livin for your love
I bought the album for my mother in 1984 because of THIS song. With Melba's long list of hits on the R&B and dance charts, I always thought that, if ever there was a song that DESERVED to go top 40 on the Hot 100, it was THIS one. Kashif was a master of the art of making magic out of electro-soul.
I am Old School. Sang with a group called the Mixed Emotions from Memphis, TN. I am very passionate about good music and I live to sing. Many thanks to the poster of this timeless music from an all time Diva Miss Melba Moore.
It's like I wished it was a bigger hit, so I could how the dancers on Solid Gold or Soul Train could interpret it... with the lights all dim and everyone dancing and flailing their arms . lol
Botoom line, kashif was a genius and revitalized the career of melba moore. even kept the 80s R&B sound together before the glorious days of NJS.
This is the first time i've heard this jam since back in the day. I was a Jr. in high school in 1983 and behind thriller and shannon, this was the third most played song. This jam has all the sounds that represent the R & B sound between 1982 and 1984! Thanks for postin this! Much appreciated.
This is from my favorite melba moore album. The title track "never say never" still blows me away. Great times, great music, great memories. January the 1st 1990 was sad day. 80's RIP.
Korstates; basically '78 and '79 is disco (and that's not stereotypically '80s R&B!), with '80 a mix of disco and quiet storm, and '81 mainly neo-soul with some disco leftover. 1982-1985 was TRUE '80s R&B; no disco, no new jack swing, and very little rap. Quiet storm really dominating. 1986-1987 come close, but NJS and rap start to invade. 1988-1990 are the real transition years to the hip-hop/rap oriented era. Only the big ballads lasted into the '90s.
@korstates the 70's had the best songwritting and the 80's had the best music bya long shot 78-80n were great timesand i was lucky enought o bearound at that time to gravitate and soak in all the r&b i could muster says uzipolo-king of decatur
I love the 80's, but 1990 was straining to hold on to the 80's sound, and by 1991 music become a bore, i think rap killed 80's soul when all the artists started dabbling with rappers in there songs, thats where it died. Now of course gansgter rap has replaced the soul that was beautiful to listen to.
@trvwatson WOW! Youalmost resonate with how I feel..I would extend it until 1993-94..to be absolutely fair! LOL. The Golden Age Of R&B was in my opinion, from 1977-92.
Oh i agree RnB did carry on untill the mid 90's, who can forget weak by SWV--but that 80's true soul sound like this track had more of an 80's retro feel to it. and it just didn't exist for me in 1990's, but thats just my opinion., look up Stronger together by shannon (1984), you will get the full disco/soul im talking about. its the best.
@trvwatson I agree totally. Chante Moore was the only real artist that kept Me going into the 90's. Oh, By the Way, I Love Shannon (Green), but the The Year was 1985. I have the album, "Do You Wanna Get Away". Stronger Together was my favorite track off that album. Thanks for the response.
No need to correct me on the actual year 1984/85, who cares, thats not what my message was about, i however have 1984 written on my cd that i play the track on--
I think everyone relates to the music of their childhood, some young people talk of music from 2004 as if its true old school, AS IF- soul music in 90 - 91 was fantastic, in 92 i was 17 i was horrified to see what was happening to my beloved soul music, groups like SWV hung in there, the track WEAK in 93 is one of my all time fav hits, NEVER IN MY LIFE by CHERRELLE being another. i think you are entitled to like whatever you like, after all its your memories, some users hate others opinions
@trvwatson Don't get me wrong, a lot of the R&B in the 80 was epic! Without the original tunes of that era, a lot of rap wouldn't exist! I remember, in the late 80s and early 90s, I remember listening to this very song!
I guess record companies thought that people didn't want to listen to ballads anymore!
Ha! When I was 17, I said the same thing about rap being watered down!
I respect your opinion! Once again, I agree about 91 trying to hold on to the 80s sound!
I remember that. I used to listen to Magic 102 and K104 out of Dallas. I lived in a small town in between both cities. When it would rain, I could pick up both stations really good. I used to have blank cassettes waiting for a rainy day. I would record like crazy!
i was in the 10th grade when this song came out and fell in love with a girl name Katrina. and after all this time when ever i hear this sound i still think about her.
I was in 7th grade when this came out, and this was one of the first songs I put on the first cassette I ever made off the radio...this was one of my favorites, because of the keyboard sound...
When this song came out I was quite the young adult. Worked three jobs, paid my own bills and got away from home (it was not a bad home, I just wanted my freedom). So I got to drive to all of the roller skating rinks and enjoy my life just the way that I wanted to. 30 yrs. later, I do not regret any of it.
I do not "live" for a person's life. Just for myself, and it is a good thing. Nobody is going to love you unless you are happy with yourself.
Kashif is one of my all time favorite writer producers. His production style is right on, danceable, and very cool. I heard this song in my high school days and it had a beautiful hypnotic effect soundwise. This guy is one smooth cat and i'm going to buy this song and a few others he produced on itunes.
Her 1990 recording of "Lift Every Voice and Sing" was instrumental in having that song entered into the Congressional Record as the official African-American National Anthem.
No you are not alone on this at all. I still reside in NYC. I used to listen to "The Quiet Storm" every Friday night at either 11:00pm or Midnight [whichever time it came on. Nothing but slow and romance music. GOSH I MISS THOSE DAYS
Long Island born and raised, moved to Florida (like all the other NYers :) Reminds me of parking down by the water with my girlfriend and a bottle of Canai...hey, money's tight when you're in your 20s and going to school :^)
GOING TO SCHOOL?? This song was released in 1983. In 1983 I was either a 2nd semester freshman or a 1st semester sophommore in college at WILBERFORCE UNIVERSITY. Wow, money WAS tight those days, But at least the MUSIC was real and romantic. I would not trade those days for anything.
AchieGe- did you say Guinn sung Dreamin before Vanessa Williams, I thought it was a man, is there any chance in this lifetime of mines that you could post that song from Guinn, I am dying to hear the original song!!! PleaZZZZZZZZ?????
true fact...Guinn was a family act that got caught up in the Motown "shift" in the late 80's. and lost forever into the REAL MUSIC black hole ;-( ...
Great group and their Dreamin' version is actually BETTER than Vanessa's (A+ to Vanessa's A respectively)A rare album indeed that had several other outstanding tracks 4 sure)
Wow! People always act like certain songs or groups never existed! Like Eric Benet and his sister were together first, they called themselves Benet, and there was this song called "In debt to you"- was it only my dreams????? I think naught! LOL!
I agree whole heartedly...too bad SOMEBODY has deliberately replaced REAL music with a synthetic...and it is NOT just a trend. Nothing against so called hip hop but it should not be a one size fits all when it comes to music today. Like calling taco bell REAL mex food just cas they got burritos n hot sauce. lol! Fortunately memories last... ;-))
THIS IS THE CUT RIGHT HERE! am I the only one that thinks of "you give good love" by whitney when they hear this? it also reminds me of "dreamin" by vanessa williams, but aint nobody like ms melba moore!
Oh my God you are a heaven send. I have not heard this song since I was 14 years old. I use to love this song. I have not heard it in years. I remember that album cover because I had it. Thank you so much for bringing back some wonderful memories. Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!
I believe this song was from her 1986 album not 1983

veritas911,
No you are not alone on this at all. I still reside in NYC. I used to listen to "The Quiet Storm" every Friday night at either 11:00pm or Midnight [whichever time it came on. Nothing but slow and romance music. GOSH I MISS THOSE DAYS

Same here :^)
Long Island born and raised, moved to Florida (like all the other NYers :) Reminds me of parking down by the water with my girlfriend and a bottle of Canai...hey, money's tight when you're in your 20s and going to school :^)

veritas911,
GOING TO SCHOOL?? This song was released in 1983. In 1983 I was either a 2nd semester freshman or a 1st semester sophommore in college at WILBERFORCE UNIVERSITY. Wow, money WAS tight those days, But at least the MUSIC was real and romantic. I would not trade those days for anything.
I see that we are in the same age range.

AchieGe- did you say Guinn sung Dreamin before Vanessa Williams, I thought it was a man, is there any chance in this lifetime of mines that you could post that song from Guinn, I am dying to hear the original song!!! PleaZZZZZZZZ?????
Champana69 4 years ago
true fact...Guinn was a family act that got caught up in the Motown "shift" in the late 80's. and lost forever into the REAL MUSIC black hole ;-( ...

Like calling taco bell REAL mex food just cas they got burritos n hot sauce. lol! Fortunately memories last... ;-))

Do you know that there was a man that sung the song Dreamin that Vanessa Williams sings?
It was totally beautiful and people act like it never existed- really makes me crazy to the tenth power!

THIS IS THE CUT RIGHT HERE! am I the only one that thinks of "you give good love" by whitney when they hear this? it also reminds me of "dreamin" by vanessa williams, but aint nobody like ms melba moore!

I so agree,
about Whitney's You give good love and this song
it must be Kashif Magic that moved me/us at the time :)
"Dreaming" i had already heard done by Guinn before i heard Vanessa's version
so i guess i was biased when i heard Vanessa's for the first time :D
