@Perellio88 . I know what you mean. I did not learn until I was 59, my teacher was in his 80`s and started when he was 16 in England. I wanted to learn so I could engrave the knives I make.
mine don't cut well do you have to prep metal at all. I have sharpened them but still having trouble.I seen where some use a scribe to trace metal.is this required
many things could be wrong, the metal should be smooth( I start with 220 grit wet/dry sandpaper and end up with 400gt.) and not hardened. the face of the tool should be between 45 and 50 degrees, I use a jig available from GRS. make sure there is a small relief behind the cutting edge at the tip. if the angle you address the work is to high the tool will cut to deep, if to low the tool will skip. go slow at first.
The two companies I use are NgraveR/ 67Wawecus Hill Rd./ Bozrah, Ct. 06334 ( one dollar, refundable for catalog) and GRS/ 900 Overlander Rd./ po box 1153/ Emporia, Kansas 66801
i would love to know how u got started your line of work i myself do a little 'fancy' writting not as beautiful as yours by any means but i try i love your work and ADMIRE your patience
I got started by making knives and wanted to do my own art work, so went to engraving school in Colo. So far it is not work. When it becomes work, I will probably quit. Keep trying, it will come to you sooner than you think
Gota say, great unintended pun ?? 0:08 '' They get 'fired' '' !! The gun's or the workers haha! nice Pun !! Mr Alverson final statement about ones 'limitations' is truly wise advice, I would hazard a guess that his estimation of a 'Master Standard' is higher than most, I could watch and listen to him all day, and consider it a day very well spent. Thank you for the post, and very many thanks to Mr Alverson for continuing his work. 5X5+Sav&Fav
My apologies for not answering this sooner, but did not know Pete had posted this video. I had to go outside for awhile after reading this, to let the swelling in my head go down. Ha. Ha.
It's nice to see craftsmen still around in this world of factory stamped computerized crap.

This is a killer art thats slowly dying because all the cool ppl that can do this are getting old and the young age is a computer generation.
