They don't need to be put on top of soil you can just let them role about on the bottom of a box. chek out my pupae by typing in martinjoelsamuel.

The caterpillar skin actually sheds, revealing the pupal skin underneath - which is initially green and soft, then turns brown and hardens. They don't just 'become leathery' - other than that, good video, look forward to seeing them hatched.
