  • Outstanding work. I love it!

  • So what's your next project?

  • @ReReShow80 I've made this video last year : vimeo(dot)com(slash)18964314 . And I'm now working on more music videos. Let me know when you'll have harnessed Unity :)

  • I didn't say I was good at Unity :) but at least I am on my way thanks to seeing stuff like this.

  • I don't think i ever mentioned that what you did helped inspire me to teach myself Unity. Did i ever mention that. these 3D scenes that you do have a real way of inspiring people like me.

  • @ReReShow80 wow. thanks man, your comment humbles me.

  • Epee Rules!!

  • This is fantastic! You get what someone like Zemeckis fails to understand, with all his millions: animation is a medium that flourishes the more stylization you inject into it. Love the sound design too.

  • @inqueling wow. thanks :) (your comment left me pretty speechless)

  • Finally one of the best sports in the world is getting some recognition. Fencers of the world UNITE!!!! XD

  • If you did this with Blender it would be a big help to me because I am trying to convince them that you can use open source software for what's considered real animation out here.

  • What references exactly did you read up on for this before doing in? What exactly is key frame animation?

  • @ReReShow80 Some fencing manuals for proper postures, foil grip and basic movements, then I watched every swordfighting/swashbuckling movie I could get my hands on, from Errol Flynn to Matrix Reloaded... That was to get a better timing/choreography on screen, without it being too fast (in comparison to real foil matches, that are usually over in a couple of seconds).

Keyframe animation means it's hand-animated (instead of having guys in wetsuits and pingpong balls being captured by cameras.).

  • @eklectric They're called "Mo-Cap" suits. I am very impressed by this keep up the good work.

  • AWESOME WORK! KEEP IT UP!

  • AWESOME WORK! KEEP IT UP!

  • I like how the transitioning from 2d into 3d really awesome definitely gonma like :)

  • This is totally brilliant, I'll be watching it again and again. How is it done, I mean what kind of animation is it? It looks computer generated but the movement of the fencers is so natural. It must've taken forever.

  • @ricuk64 it's classic key-frame animation. I watched a LOT of references before animating, and then animated the whole thing in a month and a half (not so good for your health) :). Olivier provided killer-rigging!

  • @eklectric It is so good. It makes me want to be able to animate....AND fence! I love the way they move.

  • excellent..... besides the fact that they shook with the right hand as opposed to the left... but great animation nonetheless

  • formidable ......tout simplement

    Une frenchie de Hollande

  • cool!

  • I was looking for a tutorial...and found this. WOW...That was really really cool.

  • AMAZING!!!

  • Great stuff - really enjoy watching this short :)

  • I love how theyre using frenchgrip! I hate pistolgrip.

  • awesome!!

  • COOL

    from 1 to 10 i give it a 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000.

  • dude... 1 word... LEGENDARY

  • nice video!!

    i give you 1000 stars!!

  • Fantastic. Leaving for Nationals tomorrow; I feel inspired

  • good luck! :-)

  • Very entertaining. I used to fence foil, and this piece of craftswork has caught the whole idea and athmosphere in the sport, we can fight "to death" to find a winner, but in the end the real winner is the one who can still shake hands with his opponent and mean it.

  • Nice! I once had the ambition to do something like this but then I realized that I didn't have the know-how to do it... Still don't... for now my idea lies to rest....

But great video... Love it and great job!

  • like it! (:

  • man i love this it is amazing!!! thanks i actually fence and it is suprizingly realistic!

  • My congratulations to the people who made this;

While I personally think that sabre would have made it possible to really justify the dramatic sidewards slashes and also they seem to be lacking the electric jackets for the foils they are using, but regardless this is still a brilliantly done piece of animation.

    A definite favourite for me.

  • BRAVO!

  • I loved that random train! Made it seem like the city might have had other people in it.

  • This looks great!!!

  • Impressive job....

and bonus points for using foil

not many people throw credit in that direction these days

  • Well, I've been reading all the positive comments for quite some time - since the movie was submitted, I believe - and I never took any time to thank you all guys for your support!

As a member of the team of three crazy guys that made the movie back in the days, I have to say it was one difficult but highly exciting experience, especially considering we had such a short amount of time to actually do the work.

  • In the end, even if we had a lot of issues and met more obstacles than we had bargained for, I was proud to release "En Garde". And I'm even prouder when I read your comments.

Maybe some things could have been done better, maybe the movie could have been greater.

I, for one, see that people are entertained and enjoyed the movie, so I feel like, you know, "mission accomplished!"

  • GOOD, Very good!

    My congratulations from Bilbao.

  • Eccezionale! This is a great animation which can only have been produced by a fencer (probably a foillist) What is amazing is how it captures visually what fencers go through during their assualts, the battles of wits, fencing on a psycological tightrope, the feeling that one wrong move and you have lost. I really liked the handshake at the end-obligatory in all fencing bouts.

Enfin il faut un peu de respcte pour ton adversaire (sorry my french is rather poor)

  • Thanks a lot for your comment, consider I only did two years of fencing (a loooong time ago '87/'88), and that I did sabre ;).

Glad the other intentions got through! :)

  • Ah well, I could have sworn you were foillist...still well done. A real Gem on Youtube and a pleasure to watch.

  • very nice as a 3d animation student myself i really appreaciate all the work that goes into the shorts once again very good

  • Fucking koreans, fuck you... nigga you crazy, shit... man.

charley bit me and it hurts.

  • ok warning No. 1:

Or you explain yourself, 'cos i don't like seeing "fuckin' Korean", "fuck you" and Nigga in the same sentence.

Especially when i have the feeling you have no idea what you're talking about.

Better come with a real argument dude, or I'll just plain block your ass.

    no pun intended.

    Chuck

  • supersoaker those ho's.... uuuuuuuuuu!!!

  • please speak sense....

  • very entertaining!

  • ANGERS!!!!.

  • uhm, sorry?

  • bien fai

  • merci!

on s'est tout de meme gourrés de main a la fin ;)

  • what should have been in english?

"en Garde" doesn't really translate in anything else ;)

  • Etant donné que la langue officielle de l'escrime est le français je ne pense pas qu'il existe de traduction pour "en garde"

  • Hey, dumb head, English is not the only language in the world. The video was published on the fr domain, where "fr" stands for France, you know, on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean... Yep, France is a country, you know, in Europe and guess what? They speak French and they don't have to speak English just to make a dumb head like you happy.

  • Another American who thinks there is nothing else in the world but USA and George Bush (I don't mean that for all Americans by the way, just him)...

  • wow man, who got you so angry?

    He did say please :)

Please don't invent him a whole way of thinking just by reading a small sentence he wrote...

Not really worth it too :)

No pun intended of course ;)

  • english... the only language in the world..

  • please don't get cocky :)

Very nice work...the animation at it's begining gives a very good impression of the sport (fencing), very fairplay. Then with the 3D stuff...it's very original, and i really appreciate that a lot. Congratulations, and very very outstanding work!

  • Remarquable
