@ 14 seconds Cm (11th on top) , is that the same as calling it Cm11 or is there a reason why it would not be. Just trying to gain some insight, your vids are awresome thanks very much.
The melody of the song from 1:20 to 1:26 should lead to Bb - ABSOLUTELY not B as you do! It's specifically Natural Minor, not Harmonic (the chord there is G alt so the Bb is the +9 of the chord, right?). And then some of my opinions: the Dm7b5 chord is okay, but the next one should be played single note (Eb) and then take the Bdim and again single note (C) which leads to G alt (G7+5+9) the melody note being Bb.
@abdidba Who cares... If you're watching this in a club, have a Tanguerey and Tonic and forget it. It's his interpretation. If you're so great, post a video response. Music isn't only the theory, it's the love. Maybe you got former, but you damn sho don't got the latter. Take the A train, Jack.
@yankeeG Well, arguing about music is basically pretty useless, but I must tell you one thing. It's not my fault if Kenny Dorham composed the song so that the melody leads to Bb so that the melody is in harmony with the chord. Maybe I should've never kicked off this conversation but I personally like receiving constructive feedback.
@abdidba Don't care. There is "as artist intended" and then there's "not as artist intended". Do you think this guy might know where to find the chord as Dorham composed it? Constructive criticism, my butt. It's called 'butting in' with baloney. I'll put it this way... I like his playing way more than I like your carping about a chord that nobody but you cares about. If you feel that strongly, play it your way and brag about it.
On top means "on top of the chord". In standard notation the top of the chord is the highest note you play. On the guitar the highest note is on the highest string in contrast to the lowest note which is on the lowest string.
At Sithconnor, I'm not speaking out against the playing in the video because it's solid, but the chords used are all "drop 2" voicings (the most basic set of inverted chords used) with the melody note added on the highest string. Yes, they are very, very beautiful, but very easy to do on your own with just a short amount of practice. Good luck!
Great voicing! Very useful, thank you! Think I'm gonna steal some of your ideas for my interpretation of this tune!
