I don't think Viola outshined Merly, it was the nature of their own script. However, Viola's performance was exquisit, it actually makes you wonder what side would you better be in, Meryl's (against supposedly child molesting) or Viola's (against child bullying, beating and discrimination).
Very powerful performance! It's funny how Viola and Meryl will be up against each other for best actress this year. Personally, i hope Viola takes it.
Has anyone anywhere gotten it yet??? All these "award" competition/shows are rigged and have been since their inception. Why do you think actors of color saw it nessary to start their own ceremonies and such. When Diana Ross lost for her portrayl of Billie Holiday and let's not forget the color purple. "Mainstream" america is geared toward the obvious choice but also the Academy has always played favorites. This is no big secret.
im seein gthe help next week and viola davis is in it and my mom goes i dont know anyone in that cast! and i go she was in a movie with meryl streep! and my mom goes as an extra and i was like grr no! and then later i go the movie was called doubt and she goes ohhhhh i know her!
This is one of the most startling and brilliant supporting performances in my living memory - one of the most memorable scenes in what was a brilliantly observed script. That this did not get the Oscar still astounds me, just goes to show their frequent lack of worth in rewarding truly brilliant acting.
It really says something about your ability when you can act in a small role alongside Meryl Streep, one of the most respected actresses in the history of film, and outshine her.
to be frank, I am completely bewildered by this scene! and you all wrote everything there was to write about it! Yes Meryl is as first-rate as she has always been and yes Viola comes as the beckon of what a fine acting should be like!
want to see completely mezmerizing acting, watch Viola Davis from 3:50-the end. if you want to see awful acting, watch Meryl Streep at around 6:05. Davis is greatness.
This scene is incredible. In 7 minutes, Ms. Davis demonstrates a level of acting that makes the viewer feel privileged to have lived to witness it. Ms. Streep reacts as the audience -- which is also a fine demonstration of fine acting. Thanks for putting it on YouTube. I hope to see more of Viola Davis.
@kevinramrod Hi. Thanks for your response. Penelope Cruz is a caucasian from Spain as far as I know. There is a tendency to think of 'hispanic' or 'latino' whites as belonging to another race. Even if she was not, the white bias in the academy awards caters not just to people who are genotypical white, but also those who are 'phenotypically' white.

This is the essence of what I try to convey to my acting students. It comes from the inside out. It's not a facade. You are present in the moment and this is a testament to an actress that has studied and truly knows how to act from the inside out! Still in awe!
This is one of the best scenes in movie history. Viola Davis did deserve that Oscar. Penelope Cruz was annoying and substandard in that horrible movie by Woody Allen. But the academy voters are notorious for their cronyism, which sadly usually ends up in non-White actors being left out in the cold.
What Viola Davis does in this scene is remarkable. The things she says in this scene were the reason she should have gotten that Oscar. She is magnificent.
Very nice, emotional and sometime even sad movie. The acting was brilliant. I'm not a big Meryl Streep fan but she's very talented and looked stunning here. Amy Adams was no less imressive - she deserved the Oscar for this supporting role and finally Philip Seymour Hoffman and Viola Davis were amazing as well
The submissiveness in her eyes juxtaposed with pain and love tells this woman's story without her having to speak. Yet when she does speak you can hear her passion for her son. Mas bella!
its a brillant potrayed of that time for african americans how it was different then now hopefully but she was so willing to let it go for the sake of her sons education.
In a single 8-minute extended scene, Viola Davis powerfully robbed the entire movie for herself!! Now THAT is a testament of fine acting!! I don't care what anyone thinks about Penelope having won as Best Supporting Actress, I only know that Viola Davis did a lot more in a lot less time and was far more deserving of the award!!
@thedrmat Penelope represents another type of acting... and i think that was the academy awards tried to demonstrate... but there is not doubt that Viola was incredible in this scene
@thedrmat great actors arent remembered from an oscar win..they are remembered from great performances in movies like this great actress here...come 50 years time NO ONE will remember that penelope once won an oscar...and EVERYONE will remember violas great performance in this movie...

Maryl Streep is an incredible actress, but it was Streep who had to hold her own against Viola Davis in this scene.

I saw the original B'way production of 'Doubt' and the film version. Both projects were perfectly cast.
As a die-hard Kate Winslet fan it pains me to say that Winslet should not have won for 'The Reader'. Meryl should have had Oscar #3.
