  • i remember an episode about a little wooden man floating down a stream.

  • Me: regressing back to childhood via YouTube since 2006.

  • Pitty PB got bland in the 90's after old Alan had gone....

  • Do you have the full programme? If so please put it up..!

  • I remember watching this crossed legged at school in 1972!

  • Bloody hell, that takes me back.

  • I agree with the person who said the music creeped them out, it did that to me and it reminded me of Tales of the Unexpected. I also remember The Book Tower with Tom Baker doing the same.

  • will somone post more of this picture box on you tube its fucking awesome fancy getting legged thru the woods by a peado bear brilliant

  • hello do you remember that scene from the film last week - well i crept into his room shortly after that and bummed the that kid

  • SO FAMILIAR ,SO FRIKKIN WEIRD,put a wig on him and voila! its the queen!!

  • I cannot believe this ran as late as 1988.

  • Er...well I'm 34 not 12!!! Depends what you find good looking I suppose!!

  • The theme tune is called "Manège" and is played by Jacques Lasry, on an instrument called a Cristal Baschet. Taken from a 1968 LP "Structures Sonores No.4".

  • can i ask, does anyone know who wrote this music at the beginning?

  • i love the music, you could do a few lengths in the swimming pool to this tune

  • The start of this used to remind me of old handlebar tashes that the teachers had stinking of fags and coffee stinky cunts.also pornos.

  • The start of the show reminded me of Tails of the unexpected with the dancing sillouetteat the start which also scared the crap out of me.

  • @suckyamomma30 I TOTALY AGREE WITH YOU THE PRESENTER WAS FREAKY TO! the open university theme used to weird me out also

  • Beyond if this was you mate all i can say is..Nice hair,lol.1988 i believe?I was about 12 then so my hair was worse. One of the worse fucking things i have ever seen on Tv.The start of picture box scared the crap out of me though.

  • Crazy.

  • The kid with the gun was me! I cannot believe this is on here. By far the worst written thing ever - it was fun to make though. I lost my VHS of this in a housefire so if anyone has the whole awful thing or access to it - please post it so I can d/l it and have it back.

  • good aul' Lazer Tag.

  • @beyond1434 I would pay good money to be able to say "The kid with the gun was me." Gr8 work fella!!

  • @beyond1434

don't be silly it was not awful it was good

  • lol! i remember this! i think ive found my halloween soundtrack for this year

  • cant belive this scary shite lasted up until the year I left school !

  • Beautifull music it reminds me of a claasical tune

  • it was a very basic way of doing the credits

a jewelry box filmed on a revolving cake stand

  • Jesus! The music to Picturebox always frightened me - it sounds like it's rising from a cellar. And the drab video look of the programme sort of compounds the creepiness. It'd never get made today etc

  • Picture Box always reminded me of a version of Tales of the unexpected for younger viewers.

  • I thought exactly the same thing! Wasn't it a similar if no identical intro sequence?

  • Have been trying to remeber what this programme was called for years! Just remembered the spinning box & the presenter! Thought I'd imagined it as none of my friends knew what I was talking about! Classic 80's TV!

  • That organ tune has haunted me for about 20 years.

  • i dont remember anything that happened in this program but i do remember that opening theme music. that bear is pretty fucked up.... he reminds me of that tasmanian devil monster thingy thats in creepshow lol

  • this would probably be like a '15' now or something, and they wouldnt allow the gun,lol

    creepy but ace.

  • who the fuck thought this up for kids damn films were creepy back then for some reason.

  • I love the music on this vid. Absoluteltely love it. What's so scary about it?

  • Who remembers the name of the guy who used to host it.

I remember him from the early mid 70s when he hosted the show then... believe me when I say the guy was YOUNG but his hair greying, even then.

  • Alan Rothwell from Brookie!

  • i wont sleep tonight O_o

  • now you know what paul o'grady looked like before hard drugs made him happy !

    LMAO

  • I was scared too, now the music reminds me of TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED also from ITV (Roald Dahl stories)

  • I remember this one. It scared the shit out of me!

  • That has got to be the fakest looking bear I have ever seen in my life!

  • I remember being scared of the rotating box as well as the music. Because it's an empty box, but it looks as though it has been designed to hold something... to present something... That cushion in the middle...? maybe a severed finger - or a hand - would rest on it. You invite your victorian friends around, wind-up the music, and watch the severed body part rotate. Laughs all round.

  • hahaha thats amazing. The music was kind of scary and as for the rest.... you have one hell of an imagination, I'll say that about you!!!

  • Not bothered about commenting on this episode, but the music is something else,Had to endure it in the school TV room way back, It conjures up images of perhaps going back in time to a victorian fairground, or you can imagine witnessing a manifestation of a ghost fair, and this being the music that you're hearing! really erie.I just remember feeling strange when it was on. The presenter also was in Brookside apparently, was it Nick Black the character he played.

  • What about Roger McGough he used to do Picture

Box as well 12 mouths after this was showen

  • Was that the John West bear? ;-)

I wonder why so many people - myself included - find this theme to be so eerie?

  • becausee it is. it's fuckedin the head. these guys were on heroin

  • that programme intro was always really eerie. but nice to remember.

  • God even the music creeps me out! Love it...however, far more disturbing was the intro to the schools program Near and Far. Brrrrr...shit myself to that!

  • Who was this man speaking?

  • The presenter is Alan Rothwell

  • more plz! thx to stuff like this, no horror flix scare me like when i was 10. agreed with all comments below.

  • Yes. Unfortunately with the introduction of Political Correctness, and the general "sanitisation" of children's television, we will never again see programmes as scary as this for kids.

  • this program always fucking scared the shit out of me with the creepy into music to the program! but i remember this only too well lol

  • Lol !

    WTF ?!

This should be classed as an '18'... I can imagine shitting my pants if I saw that at 13 or something...

  • 13? ffs we used to get dragged along to the school tv room when we were about 8 to watch this stuff. ive still got the nervous twitch and sleep with a gun under my pillow. lololol. i used to love the music and that glass/silver box with the red silk in it turning round. i didnt have many toys or get out much as a child. i dont remember it being scary either. bit dodgy this one though, young boy getting chased in woods by big hairy flasher lol

  • im confused, picture box was more like 78, typo? though the footage in this looks later or 88 as it says. weird

  • "long running" as described in the box remember. It went out for well over ten yrs

  • the series apparently ran between 1966-1990
