I saw Matt play at the Grand Emporium in Kansas City he was great.
I saw Joe Lewis walker in Kansa City in August this year at Knuckleheads great show he is also working with BB King now and then, I would love to hear BB.
My 9-year-old son and I were sitting next to Matt Guitar Murphy on a plane from Miami to New York last month. He told us he was in the movie Blues Brothers, but I didn't know until I googled him, that he was so well known. He is a really nice guy.
Cool Video. Matt Guitar Murphy is one of the best guitarists around. Interesting though - Gibson putting this up. Matt Guitar Murphy more recently endorsed Cort Guitars and Cort has out a Matt Guitar Murphy Signature Model.
@robertm2000 Gibson will try to exploit any possible though wrongful avenue of PR.... including their intentionally infringing my iconic image of Wolf playing guitar after they were specifically NOT permitted two years earlier because they would not pay fee (or even a guitar) for a proposed use as a contest and also PR for contest images "Oh, we don't pay our artists" You can bet they will soon pay Getty Legal as all they did was "we referred to appropriate parties" on my asking a fee.credit
Anybody knows what happened with Billy Stepney? Any whereabouts? Is he still alive? and after this, what came to him? I'd be grateful for any info about him. Thanks
@malli69 It's "his own interpretation of the Murphy boogie." Willie Dixon on bass, Billy Stepney on drums, Memphis Slim on piano. See "Matt Guitar Murphy performing Live" video by Gibson Guitar Corporation for the introduction by Dixon.
Joe Louis Walker, a friend of Murphy himself said in a interview for Guitar World that this is the main and greatest problem of modern blues guitarists.Lack of personal style. He said also that guys like B.B. King or Muddy Waters just were alone and they have nobody to copy, so they developed his styles afer listening music and of course , having influences. The full point about this. Blues is very wide. Not all has been said. Stop copying exactly the legends and become a legend yourself
We need guitarists like Matt Murphy nowadays, Blues scene is full of SRV wannabes, and it is tiresome.Don´t missunderstand me, I like SRV but I think his style is over emulated this days. If we want great blues guitarists like Matt Guitar Murphy, we need to start sounding like ourselves and not like guys like SRV or B.B. King.
@ElliotRocker I can't agree more. The last thing the world needs is another guy with a strat and a hat. It's gotten redundant and most of all, BORING.
Just been playing the album "Memphis Slim At Gate Of Horn. 1959". This is one of the finest Blues albums ever done and Matt Murphy was the main reason. The man's TONE was his signature. I hope he is doing well today.
so this fantasic harmonius guitar gentleman yu hear here was one of the obcessive influences into form the musical background technics of no one less than JIMI PAGE FROM LED ZEPPELIN!
That would be to suggest blues musicians didn't "steal" a lot from each other. Later on in his career Hendrix (I assume that's who you're talking about) did a lot of crap. He implemented in his playing a good portion of what could technically be defined as "noise." Still, his earlier stuff was much better, and he was pretty darn good on an acoustic if I remember correctly.
Willie Dixon and the label he was signed to had to sue the Zep to get their royalties from the songs of his they did. I love the Zep but right is right...
Must have been The American Folk Blues Festival touring Europe in 1962. Matt played in Memphis Slim's backing band at the time. Slim settled in France after this tour, Matt went back to the States. "Memphis Slim at the Gate of the Horn" on VeeJay was my first album ever and I learned to play blues copying that record with Matt on guitar. It included "Steppin' Out" that Eric Clapton made famous with the Blues breakers and Cream. Matt's guitar solo on that track is amazing.
Though it´s pretty complicated to play, they all look so easy when playing, they´re not trying to prove themselves - they don´t need to. And it all fits together so good!
The first time I ever saw or heard of him was as a part of James Cotton's band in Marietta, OH in the early '70's, opening for Muddy Waters (what a night THAT was!), and I couldn't believe this weight-lifter-looking BALD guy with the porkpie hat playing these bebop licks over the blues. Seven years later, I see him in the BB Movie, and it's the same guy. (At the Cotton show, he had "MATT MURPHY" on his guitar strap, so I know I'm right.) An under-appreciated giant.
this is years before he joined the Blues Brothers. It's taken from the American Folk Blues Festival, early Sixties, with the great Memphis Slim on piano and the greatest Blues songwriter on double bass, Willie Dixon.
The Blues Brothers allowed a whole new generation AND demographic to discover the incredible talents of the musicians in The Blues Brothers Band. Matt Guitar Murphy is such a talent, I can't find words. Thank you to whomever uploaded this wonderful video!
I'm pretty sure its memphis slim, I know that otis was there that night. But for this set I think piano players switched. Otis's fingers weren't that long, they were notoriously small.
