Hi David. I have a question for U about this machine. Where did U bought all those aluminium modular profiles, are they expensive ? And if You can just tell me what is the size of those two "main" profiles on X axis ( stepper are mounted by side on them ) ? Thanks and cheers man! Wonderful job and awesome cnc !
In answer to your question. These are known by different names depending on the manufacturer.
The most common is "TSLOTS". They come in sizes that can be useful for just about any project. You can find them at "tslots.com"
You will find that the actual extruded aluminum is quite affordable but the fasteners to put it all together will in most cases, cost more than the aluminum.
This is my second cnc machine. I cut all the parts for this machine using my 1st cnc machine. This machine is far superior to my previous machine. Some guys have cut their own parts using hand tools.
@DavidCousins That's cool. I want to do the same, make a barely functional machine, and then have it fabricate its own replacement parts. C3PO, "Machines making machines, how perverse."
@DavidCousins I love this comment :) It's so cool to see machines evolve like that... I'm in the process of ordering parts for my first build so I've been doing a lot of research. How about a few questions... What power rating / RPM is that spindle? Can this machine handle Aluminum? Are you using the lead screws with Delrin Acme nuts or ball screws/nuts?
The plans cost $100. There are two versions. A acme screw (v 1) and a Rack and Pinion (V2). Both of these will cost you in the neighborhood of 3K. Although you can bring that down a little if you are frugal, or you can spend more as well. The price of the plans includes admission to Joe's web forum. The forum is a great place to hangout while building your machine. Tell Joe I sent you. :)
since the new Joe hybrid is available, the plans for the joe06 are now free. Its a great CNC Router but when you compare it to the New one, it seems outdated.
Very cool machine. If the cutting tool was a bit shorter there would be much less tool chatter. Very nice router!

I'm interested in purchasing your 4x4 Hybrid plans but I am also curious as to how much the full system would cost to get a complete running machine.
