If you want an example of what an utter joke the Abwehr were, and how truly magnificent British Intelligence was, read Ben Macintyre's brilliant book, "Operation Mincemeat". The only question I was briefly left with at the end was how on earth a war against such total incompetents went on for so long. Of course, I quickly realised what a stupid thought that was. While the Germans of that time were absolutely terrible at subterfuge, clearly they were very good at organised universal violence.

Couldn't they have just kept that Carl Richter guy in solitary confinement until the end of the war to verify whether he was really a "master spy" or whether his "cover story" was really true? I know it's a dangerous game and all but seems kinda cold to just execute him.

What I don't understand is how the Germans could be so brilliant in building creative, superior technology and yet be so outclassed in the "mind games" department. I guess it's what happens when you have a dictatorial chain of command where you're often more pressured to report "good news" than your actual suspicions.

enigma cod was cracked by polish mathematitians in 1938 , the british and french got their copies of enigma build by poles in 1939

The Polish were the first to break enigma. However, they lost the ability to read the codes prior too September 1st, 1939. The British broke the 3 wheel enigma based on the Polish work. The British broke the naval 4 wheel and Lorenz machine 12 wheel coding cyphers.

I thought the film Enigma was supposed to tell this story, how the machine got to Polland, then travelled to France, then to Spain and finally to UK.
