Overly optimistic number of American planes getting hit. Wasn't the cloud cover pretty bad on April 7, 1945? I guess in a computer game fantasy you can get rid of cloud cover and improve visibility for the antiaircraft gun crews on the machine guns and 5 inchers.
very good vid but the logic of it is not so great, 1st Flak was not that accurate, 2nd the U.S carriers would not be that close, 3rd the Yamato had no air cover when it set sail.
Yep some stuff in this vid can only happen if a lot of stuff happened diferently and one how did the Yamato find the U.S naval forces that fast I mean they wouldn't have attacked from that distance now would they?
Unless the Yamato went undetected until it was too late to send a large force of U.S. planes to do any damage that would result in the Yamato's sinking.
@tsuyoshi15 Actually I read somewhere that the Yamato wouldn't even last in a fight against the USS South Dakota, Yamato had outdated fire control and radar, in a battle of big gunned warships it's yee who hits the most who will win, being faster than the Yamato it could just stalked it until night fall and then rape the poor Yamato.
At Operation Ten-Go, the Yamato had NO CHANCE. Even if she had survived the 380-aircraft attack, she would have been raped by six batttleships at once, including the Missouri, Iowa and South Dakota. Those three monsters against one Yamato class would have destroyed her outright.
THis is incorrect...The Yamato even being bigger was still faster than a South Dakota. South Dakota classes are failures, and their top speed is 20 knots, and their guns are smaller than those of Iowa's. Their armor is pathetic, and their speed is rubbish. While Yamato classes on the other hand had 26" inch armor, and a top speed of 27 knots. The Yamato could simply shell the South Dakota, and stay out of range of the Dakota's 14" guns. Iowas have a top speed of 35 knots.
@RtasVaduum Not true, the South Dakota it's top speed then was 27 knots identical to that of what you claim the Yamato can travel. The originally South Dakota class battle ship series was cancalled before a single shipw as finished in the 1920s. Even then projected top speed was 23knots. She was refited in 1942 after repairs from an earlier Skimirsh by 1943 she was a very good ship in general with modern radar and range finding equipment, ability to fight night battles well beyond the Yamato.
@RtasVaduum Also the Dakota has 9 16 Inch guns... I have no idea where you picked up your facts. I think the success that even in direct gun to gun engagements between The Dakota class and their Japanese competition they proved very successful not a single Dakota class was sunk during the war, all survived to be retired. They proved vastly superior during night engagements as well, which I proposed the Dakota would dominate the Yamato in such an encounter.
@sol3a1 The Combined Fleet Website rated the South Dakota Class higher than the Yamato.... if you look at the best battleships list and graphs, and charts, it was given a score of 155.5 vs the Yamato's 148 despite being a smaller ship with smaller guns, and less armor, other factors about it made it superior to the Yamato including radar and fire control.
@Luminahawke - If you were to get the FCS of the US BBs on the Yamato, the only US BB class that could have a chance would be the Iowas but I would still pick the Yamato, if he has the FCS
My whole contention is bigs and big armor is fantastic but like being a super heavy weight, if you're slow and have a hard time hitting a heavy who is faster and hits you 2 or 3 times as often will have the best chance of winning
@sol3a1 But there lies the problem, it did not, so hense despite it's size and mass it is not really all that great of a war ship.
I agree that bigger is not better if you can not hit your enemy, I told someone a while back once you get into the size catagory of a battle ship, it really matters on hitting your enemy, not who has the most armor or biggest guns. The guns out raced the armored protection on battle ships, few have armor strong enough to take even 11" shells.
As they were in 1944, I'd take the Iowa's over any other BB in any Navy and I'd say the North Carolina's and the SoDak US BB classes (almost identical) would be contenders with any other BB the the world in 1944.
I'm not saying the Showboat or SoDak would win the majority of fights if they went up against the Yamato or Musashi, but either of them would know they had a fight on their hands.
i have to laugh at the Beehive plan, it was useless as proven in real life, more or less like fireworks, but i have to admit the Yamato was a great ship, and the German plan for a ship for 20 inch guns was the H39 class but they re-thought the idea for 20 in. and replaced with 16 in.
The Germans also planed to build battleship with 20 inch guns. Had this monster been compleated it would have outclassed Yamato and even the German's own Bismarck.
Yamato may have done well in a air attack had she had a fighter escort. That is the thing the killed HMS Prince of wales and Repulse they did not have no fighter escort. A Aircraft carrier was order to join them but that ship ran aground.
Okinawa was only an apex of events witch started at Midway.
And Leyte raid show how incapable and spiritless some Japan commanders become... Since Ozawa or Nishimura press against US Forces knowing that they dont stand a chance (Ozawa against Halsey and Nishimura against Kinkaid) Kurita was nothing more as scarred chicken (he even try to break whole operation right after loosing Mushashi as valuable ship but Toyoda gives him straight order to move forward).
Dont judge ship capability by incapability of people witch were put in charge during Leyte raid.
Kurita was a moron and coward who dont have any idea how to use full power of Yamato's armament.
Heck Nishimura whit two old battleships(Yamashiro and Fuso) have more courage to sail against US fleet as that BAKA onboard most powerfull battleship of that era...
I think Midway failure and later on death of Adm. Yamamoto have bigger impact at Japan Navy morale as this might look at the first sigh...
One thing i dont understand is why wasnt the Yamato at midway, providing support to one of the carriers? The amount of AA the yamato and the other battleships had could of saved their carriers.
He was nearby main battle area however at that time his AA guns configuration was rather poorly because Japanese Admirals tend at that time to disregard aicrafts as potential danger for her.
First big AA guns "update" was made after failed battle of Guadalcanal and reach high point in 1945 (but in the end that dont help her to repel airstrikes as well).
True it's ironic how the Japanese sunk so many great Battleships with planes, PoW, Repulse and all the ships at Pearl, yet their greatest Battleship was sunk the same way.
i read on wikipedia that the plan for "ten-go" was to sail the yamato to okinawa, run aground on the beach, and use her as a an unsinkable battery on US installations
it was impossible for her to survive. She had been in confrontation with a small escort before and she retreated, so really its bark was worse than its bite. mostly because there were only like 2 ships that felt its bite.
actually, if Yamato survived the attack... she would have run into a group of 6 older American battleships, including the much-modernized Tennessee and West Virginia. These ships would have shredded whatever was left of Yamato.
and she whould have crushed them trust me read any of the rpeorts and also read admiral nimtz standing orders if any ship was engag3ed by the yama to run like hell
I think those old ship would not have mch chance on Yamato She would have made mintz meat out of Tennessee and West Virginia. Yamato was built because the Japaneses knew they would never be able to build a fleet of Battleships to out number the Americans but they decided to build one battleship with the power to Sink a number of US Ships that is How Yamato came into being. They even planed to build a super Yamato class that would have been ten times powerfull then Yamato.
Yamato and Nagato were not really properly engaged to Taffy 3 at Samar - they were some 20km away providing long distance fire support while Kongo, Haruna and the heavy cruisers tried to chase down the CVEs and their escorts.
After the cruisers got hit by torpedoes, the Japanese withdrew to avoid loosing any of their forces, and in fear that the main USN battlegroup would soon be returning.
@3L24 No, she wouldn't. An __undamaged__ Yamato might have overmatched one of USN battleships sent against her, maybe even 2 ... but if you believe she would have stood even the slightest chance against SIX then I have this wonderful bridge here that I'd like to sell to you.
Its a nice strategy game, but you pretty much have to be able to read and understand Japanese to get anywhere. There is kanji everywhere which will make it difficult even for those who have mastered the katakana and hiragana.

@Luminahawke - You are correct. The SoDaks were as fast, if not a little more so, than the Yamato
While the Yamato had impressive armor and guns, his FCS was no where near as good as the USN FCS
Some that say the FCS and Radar of the USN was fragile but even if that was true, they have to be hit first.
In an engagement of the 4 Iowas vs the 2 Yamatos, for every 30 shells the Yamato and Musashi were to put up, the Iowas would send back 80
That amount of throw weight would doom the Yamatos

@Luminahawke - That was the overall rating
When you take away the SD's AA and other non BB vs BB components, the Yamato wins in the points
What the Combined Fleet is saying there is the SD was a better "all around ship" and could be placed in more situations
How many planes did the Yamato on his last sortie shoot down?
