omg so dats what happen!! i live near dat air race nd no wonder roads were blocked nd it happened an hour or 2 after i got home from school so sad nd my friend waz at the air races dat day thnx god it ddnt hit him!!!
All I could think of was the guy in Saving Private Ryan who died trying to attach the stickybomb to the tank track. They both kind of exploded in the same way. Still, kinda tragic, though.
@sddweller This wasnt a stunt. Look at other videos. Something broke on the plane which made him go straight up in the air. The G's made him black out. There was also a video on here that showed the canopy in slow motion and you cant even see the pilot which would mean he was tucked in from the g's.
@sddweller Stunt? The guy had no control of the plane, that is not a stunt. And the guy yelling no, no, no is saying it in disbelief since he realizes the pilot is doomed.
@dandyd8691 It's was an mechanic error on the plane some did do this, the pilot did evade that anymore did get killed in this by pulling the stick to him so the plane would turn faster. What he could do, but was you dosent think of in that pressed situation, was to do a barrel roll and evade it like that.
@FiveCentsPlease We do not know that. The focus of the investigation is on the loss of the elevator trim tab, which at that speed that close to the ground would be catastrophic.
Correct, without cockpit video of the pilot, not 100%, but the onboard video was apparently lost. However the data available suggests so including the Gs and engine data recorded by the race team showing 10+ Gs and the throttle literally untouched, and the photos and videos available of the abrupt pitch up and the pilot slumped forward. Bob Hannah's similar experience with a trim tab loss is also relevant. The NTSB's findings and the sequence of events will be very interesting.
Wow - this is the only video that I know that shows the actual impact. Damn that really shocks the heart. I can't imagine having been there in person.
@lanunselat there is no explosion because airplanes that do races and shows like this one and have a chance of hitting a crowd, must now have special tanks that will not rupture and create a fireball. That is why there isn't an "explosion".
Does anybody else see the dick standing up with his hands spread open like he's happy at 13? It appears that he's cheering that he got to see a crash. I don't know if that is what he was really doing or not.
very sad for aviation enthusiasts, and about 11 people on the ground were killed also? sad :(, I had been involved in a car crash , smashing into a wall, I was ruined psychologically and never sped again when driving, nonetheless both planes and cars can be safe if handled properly, no need to turn away from planes, just check with safety and stay safe.
Photos show the pilot bent over into the instrument panel. He was likely passed out from the violent upturn and deceleration of the aircraft before it torque rolled over into the dive. Race data showed the plane quickly slowing down in an instant before going full throttle into the ground.
@maddysue01 Hell no I'm not kidding. Every video says body parts everywhere and blah blah blah yet its all the same videos shot at a distance. Nothing pisses me off more than local news choppers flying over a bad car accident and they zoom way out where I'd be right up on it!
Yeah that was a crappy day....I work at the hospital where there major traumas came....all I can say is it looked like a combat zone with a mix of burnt flesh, blood and jet fuel....not fun at all
They plan to have an event at Reno. Depending on the investigation outcome, safety review, etc. Insurance and liability for a race event might become an issue. They want to race but plan to have an airshow even if they cannot.
The fuel tanks in the racers have a foam used to prevent the fuel from sloshing and from atomizing in a crash. You can see the blue foam all over the ramp in the debris photos. It's also thought that the extra water/alcohol ADI fluid for the boil-off cooling and ADI system helped to prevent a fire.
@blade6109 You're completely stupid, why even comment something so fucking retarded when people died here? What if that was you killed right there... would you like people commenting on your death with complete non-sense you ungrateful piece of shit. Go fuck yourself.
I would like to shove your keyboard up your ass. The announcer was doing a great job. At that moment anyone not passed out or in shock is screwed up in the head. Knowing that in front of your eyes a life has been taken in a sudden, eerie impact. The announcer is simply trying to keep people from freezing up and seeing something they don't want to see or disrupting emergency operations. My condolences go out to those who lost their lives in this horrific accident.
@rmnldr You have a few things wrong, but I mostly agree. Firstly, lives weren't taken, it was a tragic accident, not murder. Secondly, many people's first want if nearby and uninjured is to help those that are injured, which is exactly what the trained first responders do not want. That was the announcer's goal, keep the well intentioned from obstructing the trained first responders.
He was out cold long before it hit the ground, no radio comm and no throttle changes. Photos show his helmet against the instrument panel after he was thrown forward when the plane pitched up.
@RGzDarkDiamond A plane like this one? Well, you're insinuating planes like that can fly thanks to electrical panels though? To me, all planes fly thanks to Kerosene, so why can we see fire in my video and not in this one? (ok, I agree they dont fly with the same quantity of kerosene but kerosene easily burns, so wtf.)
At the risk of sounding stupid.. Why was there no fire and or flames upon impact. These planes carry fuel don't they? Even when empty, there is some kind of fire when hitting the ground.. Why has no one hit on that fact?
Most likely from luck and partly from the foam baffling they use in the fuel tanks to prevent the fuel from sloshing and atomizing. It might have been helped by the water/alcohol used for the ADI system and for the boil-off cooling. Those nearby say they were covered in fuel, oil, and dirt and a fire would have been real tragedy.
I was there when this happened. I was about right behind this this person filming. this was not a fun sight. this was not the pilots fault. the 10+ G's he pulled rendered him unconcious and he couldn't do anything. Rest in peace Jimmey Leaward and the pwople who were killed and there families.
For those that talk crap and know nothing about aviation and its history..the guy did every thing he could to control the plane when the elevator trim tab failed and yes something so small can cause the plane to violently pitch up...they are designed to keep the aircraft level..and at high speeds due to the lift produced by the plane and no trim tab to keep it level it forced the plane to climb at an extreme rate..rip to the pilot
@Mexicanboy387 - Trust me, at 500mph with a broken elevator trim tab, there was nothing any pilot could do to gain control of the airplane. I imagine the stick pressure required was in the hundreds of pounds to get the nose back down.
I would love to know why the stunt pilots were flying so close to the crowds??? Their should be a minimal require distance (eg. 1 nm) for such shows. I am a private pilot and this boggles my mind..
If you are a pilot, you should be aware of how far an out-of-control aircraft (especially a racer at 500 mph) can travel. Reno has a better historical safety record for spectators than auto racing.
anyone else here the shouts of 'NO NO' before the plane hits the ground? maybe a malfunction such as the trim tab noticed prior to the plane hitting the ground by a spectator.
@wa6as I think the NO NO shout was because you could see the aircraft was doing unusual maneuvers, like going inverted. Nono guy saw where it was going. So many of those spectators are pilots, fans, and people who have seen the races before apart from new public, so they can tell when the plane isn't behaving normally in terms of maneuvering. In other videos you can hear others say something like "com'on turn around".
That was a hard pull up . don't know how many g he pulled , but after watching it he probably went into g shock and passed out .I have flown the Mustang and I could be wrong but I don't buy the trim tab failing caused this crash ...
that was terrible.. how did the guy in the crowd know the pilot was in a bad place so soon? i couldnt really see what the plane was doing before it was screaming to the ground..
dont get pissed. plz. just a statement, but that kind of looked like it could have been deliberate. i hope it wasnt. r.i.p and sorry if i offended anyone.
What the heck, when will they ever learn ? Keep the public back out of harms way and the pilots won't be killing people when something happens to their planes, just them self's, so easy but hey lets just be so stupid.
It's a shame that the public gets killed but remember they also know that their taking their own life's in their hands by being so close.
I too have been their before but I sat in my car at a distance so as not to be in harms way.
It's hard to say how Reno racing will be handled, since an out of control aircraft could travel for miles in theory. It's not like a remote kill switch could be installed. I think the general consensus is to go back to racing after the safety panel review and accept the risks. Otherwise, Reno is already organizing for next year as an "air event" which means that it could end up just being an airshow.
@MrPankacke No. Like he says in the description, 11 spectators were killed. It would have been a lot worse, except he managed to nudge the plane far enough that it just missed the crowd. The fuel tanks didn't explode either, because they had foam in them. That also would have made things a lot worse.
If any of you have ever met Jimmy Leeward, you would know he was the Real McCoy in stunt piloting and racing at the Reno Air Races. He was an expert in every sence of the word. I'm only making an educated guess here, but if the trim tab left the rear stabilizer in flight and thus the resulting in a 20+ G dive, no-one on God's Green Earth would have remained concious. If Jimmy were concious, I know without a doubt that he would have done everything within his power to steer clear from others.
I was there......MOST of you weren't. You idiots saying that he crashed because of his age are STUPID. In case you didn't know, a trim tab detached from his tail which caused him to lose control and pitch into the ground. I saw the whole event high up my dad's cockpit from the moment he was pulling out from the turn onto the straightaway. I know and saw with my own eyes that Jimmy did his best to veer away from the crowd. Have some respect for him and the victims for crying out loud!
I agree that people should have respect for the pilot and all deceased but you claiming that you saw Leward try and steer the plane away from the crowd is an outright lie. That plane did a 10+ G climb, which would have rendered Leeward unconscious unless he was superhuman and from the planet Krypton. There was no heroics on display as that plane came down. There was an unconscious pilot and a plane hurling towards onlookers like a missile.
@xTomcatsForeverVF84x why didnt they plan the straight away in a different direction so in the event of a crash, people wouldnt get hit? or can people get hit no matter where they are? just curious, not making fun of jimmy, ok.
@bikr1975 Number one, Reno-Stead airport's terrain only allows for crowds to the on the side we were on. The right side was mountainous. The entire side that we were on stretched at least halfway down the runway. Second, keep in mind that the runways are built first in mind, not crowds. Either way, no matter where the crowds are, an accident can happen anywhere at anyplace, as I witnessed. You saw the plane spiral off in a random direction, so a plane can do that anytime should something happen.
@Yeaaaaaaaahhhhhhh I gotta hand it to you, you're really great at making yourself look like an ignorant retard. You obviously haven't read up on anything concerning the crash, and the facts about Jimmy and his flight status with his health. You're just another one of those fucking idiots that post shit about things they don't know about....
@Lehightonian No, his airplane's avionics system failed and he couldn't put in enough input to complete the loop. He avoided crashing into the denser part of of crowd by turning his plane a little bit.

This is exactly why I never think about going to these type of events.

Do you cross any streets when you walk through town? You could get hit by a car and killed too you know.
burbdood 1 month ago
With this type of high sppe impact, Im guessing there wasnt much left of the pilots body.

Debbie321lopez 2 months ago
was it only the pilot who died?
MrPankacke 2 months ago

By the way: Aermacchi 339 (Germani Air Show) IS a small plane!

People were lucky it didn't explode like Freccia Tricolori in Germany!

How Does Russia Today have the best footage of this, among other U.S. events???
123Rosko 2 months ago
I was there......MOST of you weren't. You idiots saying that he crashed because of his age are STUPID. In case you didn't know, a trim tab detached from his tail which caused him to lose control and pitch into the ground. I saw the whole event high up my dad's cockpit from the moment he was pulling out from the turn onto the straightaway. I know and saw with my own eyes that Jimmy did his best to veer away from the crowd. Have some respect for him and the victims for crying out loud!

@xTomcatsForeverVF84x
There was an unconscious pilot and a plane hurling towards onlookers like a missile.
lemonpoundcake 1 month ago 21
@lemonpoundcake to add to that, his plane suffered some damage before the crash
heroofwinds9 1 month ago
@xTomcatsForeverVF84x why didnt they plan the straight away in a different direction so in the event of a crash, people wouldnt get hit? or can people get hit no matter where they are? just curious, not making fun of jimmy, ok.
bikr1975 1 month ago
@bikr1975 Number one, Reno-Stead airport's terrain only allows for crowds to the on the side we were on. The right side was mountainous. The entire side that we were on stretched at least halfway down the runway. Second, keep in mind that the runways are built first in mind, not crowds. Either way, no matter where the crowds are, an accident can happen anywhere at anyplace, as I witnessed. You saw the plane spiral off in a random direction, so a plane can do that anytime should something happen.
xTomcatsForeverVF84x 1 month ago
@xTomcatsForeverVF84x exactly! I kew Jimmy well, and that plane....age is irrelivant here

This pilot was unconcious at the stick and it was only pure luck that there weren't more fatalities.
Lehightonian 2 months ago 2
@Lehightonian No, his airplane's avionics system failed and he couldn't put in enough input to complete the loop. He avoided crashing into the denser part of of crowd by turning his plane a little bit.

the pilot saved alot of lives that day but sacrificed his own
