There are plenty of songs written from a woman's perspective but performed by a male singer. It's a lot like reading a letter that someone else wrote. You have to take into account the original context of the letter... rather than trying to apply it to whoever it is that just so happens to pick it up and read it.

is it just me or is it kinda wierd that he left the song from the perspective of the woman? it's still a woman singing to a man. when a guy sings it, it sounds like a guy to sing to his gay lover who left him for a woman lol. or maybe that was the joke lulz

Coulton is the perfect person to cover Alanis, because, despite his self-mocking style which would ordinarily deflate lyrics like these, he is, like Alanis, deeply whiny, although as he gains in popularity he's becoming surly.
