  • I can't say I love this & lets not talk about Miles. This thing simply schlaggs - doesn't swing and is difficult to listen to. Better luck next time Bill. Love your new album though: B.F. Plays John Lennon. See You.

  • fantastic

  • wow this is some of the most experimental sounding stuff i've ever heard.COOL!!!

  • @MauriceCBrown3rd You need to listen to more music.

  • What bass is Kermit Driscoll using?

  • Just so you know this show also had miles davis . I have it on video somewhere. Love this tune.

  • @bebon15 Check out my channel for many more clips from this series, including a performance of "Hannibal" by Miles Davis.

  • sounds like mr bungle

  • I prefer Bungle.

  • Late nite music was hands down the greatest music show to ever hit TV ...so it had to go.

  • Later with Jools Holland is pretty good

  • this was still one of the best small groups in "jazz" or whatever. Joey Baron is a frigging genius; so many styles and sounds from such a small kit

  • Frisell is one-of-a-kind musician... he's got his own musical world that's very inspiring... great video!

  • no one will ever accuse Frisell of being predictable

  • oh shiiiiiiiit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Though I'm not so into some of Frisell's music.. but this one is so great. Frisell's compositions are really unique.

  • is this 8/8 time?

  • There's no real sense to asking that.. The time signature changes quite often throughout

  • Yet another great clip from the dearly missed "Night Music."

  • You probably know already, but there's some other great "Night Music" stuff here... NRBQ, Richard Thompson...

  • ... Sun Ra, Pharoah Saunders... thanks!

  • nrbq?

  • Colin Wolcott on Cello!

  • ...not! That's Kermit Driscoll, Frisell's regular bassist

  • Charles Mingus on sax!

  • @Tabla461 ?

  • Yes, the cello however is played by Hank Roberts

  • deranged

  • NIGHT MUSIC was a godsend to music lovers who loved the unconventional and unique. As stated elsewhere, I knew it was too good to last - it was just too different for mainstream TV, hell, they had Miles Davis on one night, and others like Carla Bley, Pat Metheny, and Sonny Rollins, among others, made that show a standout at the time. This should be on DVD (along with Alive From Off Center, another great show from thast period).

  • Gotta love Bill!

  • Ahh late night music ,the best thing to ever hit the worthless boob tube ,so of course it couldnt last.Couldnt make money with the braindead mtv generation so the big cigar boys had to gave it the chop.

  • Love it! The drums are badass!

  • knew this would'nt last on TV - too smart too real - the interplay between frisell and baron is great

  • geniuses

  • Sounds like how I stumble home after a skin full of beer on a Friday night.

  • lovely impressionistic sound.frisell and the band perform beautifully.

  • that was pretty badass

  • great band.

  • Beautiful!! It's so fresh even after 18 years.

  • Bill is great. He really created a new way to play guitar. This band is an amazing example of telepathy. Watch Baron & Driscoll look at each other. They are truly in the moment. And how often do you see a drummer mute a snare w/ his foot?

  • Bill was using a DD-3 during this period in his playing (dd-6 wasn't around) with other analog delays and an Echoplex for loops. That warp sound you hear is from neck bends and Bill's touch on the guitar in coordination with a volume pedal (see his right foot). I think Bill sounds like 'In a Silent Way'.

  • what kind of delay pedal does he use? is it a boss-dd6 with the warp funtion?

  • Dwayne Eddy lives.

  • So different from other types of music... :)

  • or the most wonderful music you'll never be able to hear? ;-)

  • 1 - 0

  • you are a lucky person indeed

  • John Scofield once said, "When you compare music, you lose the beauty of listening to any of it." Dude, you've lost the beauty.

  • Wow! You obviously have the Sunday Nite series on video?????? I have been looking for that!!!!!!!! Especially the first one, with Milton Nascamentio and James Taylor...would you have that one??? These Bill ones....sigh. So wonderful!!!!!!!!!! And my pal Joey Barron!

  • Look for the Night Music with Richard Thompson and John Cale.. also excellent

  • Bill's my fav. I heard these guys right before their first CD, Lookout for Hope came out. It was (and still is) like music I'd dreamed of but never heard. I once drove him and band around and it was cool to hear him just bristle at critics BS. He does what he wants to and follows his muse. We should all be so lucky to have such a muse.

  • Makes me feel sick....in a good way.

  • Thank you for sharing this video with everyone!

This is a real treat seeing Bill Frisell with Kermit Driscoll, Hank Roberts, and Joey Baron. I think this was Bill's best band. This particular group did two albums together: "Lookout For Hope" and "Where in the World?" The tune "Little Brother Bobby" came from "Lookout For Hope." Frisell named this tune after his younger brother.

  • i love this music.

  • Wow! Is that a cello?

  • Where has this band been all my life?

  • WOW! No one to compare him to, he's so unique.

  • Are there any examples of bill frisell playing in a more conventional style?

  • to mpmrecords: don't forget all the stuff Baron is doing with John Zorn at the moment.

  • speechless

  • beautiful

  • A quartet of unbelievable compositional and improvisatory abilities. Awesome, absolutely! I remember when this show was the hottest thing going, and it still looks and sounds great today. Please, more Night Music performances, please !

gratefully yours, the word of gord

  • Lovely lovely lovely lovely stuff.

  • This was his best work and most influential. What a visionary!

  • What's Joey Baron doing these days? Anyone know? I remember reading that he was so particular about the music he played, that he would turn down a lot of work just so he would only play music that fulfilled him artistically. I haven't heard about him in a long time...

  • Joey Baron plays with John Abercrombie's quartet, for one.

  • Right on. And for two?

  • He's still playing with Frisell on occasion. I saw them last night in Toronto, with Tony Scheer on bass.

If you go to Frisell's website, there are bios for all the musicians he plays with, and Baron's bio sets out some of the other things he's up to right now.

  • Look at this country now...American Idol? It's just a tad alarming.

  • How is American Idol different from Star search, which ran from 1983-1995? The state of music in this country is no better or worse than ever. Bad pop music has always reigned supreme and high caliber intelligent music was always an esoteric enterprise. "Art" is always dictated by an intellectual elite, not the masses. Come on, that "it was better back then..." stuff is a total myth. There are some amazing things happening in music today. Comparing this to American Idol isn't at all valid.

  • wow - what a treat - such a great band - loving Joey Baron on this especially.

  • Awesome performance. I've only ever seen Bill Frisell do his atmospheric type stuff before this.

  • My parents have this episode on Betamax tape. Great show, and a great performance by the band too.

  • Really miss this group!!! The money lured Bill away to safe pastures, I guess for his familys sake.

  • Sad that you think that. His new material is just as great as his old material. He just got old and started liking different stuff. It happens. This video is totally balls deep though.

  • This space cadet super salutes Captain Space Jazz!

  • This was a terrific show. How long did it last? It was on in Chicago on Sunday nights--if I remember correctly. Frizz-tone seemed really out there in those days (to this listener, anyway).

    Thanks for posting this!

  • thank you so much. I love this era and have always wanted to see this band but was a wanker and did not know or like Frisell at the time. This is a real treat thank you.

  • Naw, it's David Sanborn with a bad blow-dry!

  • That's not Ted Danson?

  • The host looks like Ted Danson. No?

  • are night music series available on dvd?

  • BILL IS A WIZARD!

  • yessss! this must be from the early 90s...one of my fave Frisell periods. thanks for sharing!

  • The show is from 1989.

  • Very cool, Baron & Frisell! Thanks!

  • Awesome performance, what is it called, on what album, thanks

  • The song is called "Little Brother Bobby" and its from Frisell's "Lookout for Hope" album. Great song, great album...! Thanks a lot for sharing..!
