  • With both ears implanted, I am able to use the telephone and even go to the drive-up window at fast-food places and understand what they say. I usually get approached by a deaf person once or twice per year about "going against God's will" by being implanted. I tell them I had normal hearing for 18 years, but that makes no difference to them. I do understand your frustration about dealing with hearing people sometimes...

  • I had normal hearing until I was 18 years old. My time in the USAF ruined my hearing and it got worse and worse and the years wore on. I started wearing hearing aids when I was in my early 20's. Eventually, hearing aids were almost useless. I could not go to a drive-up window and order for probably 25 years because I just couldn't understand them. I received my first cochlear implant in 2008 and my second (bilateral) in 2009.

  • I never understood people who act like that towards deaf people. I used to work at McDonalds, near the Oklahoma School for the Deaf and I was the only one I worked with that had a basic knowledge of ASL. On top of that I made it a point to learn a new sign every time a deaf person came in. Ignorance of something when the knowledge is right in front of you is unacceptable.Everything is a learning experience.

  • Also while not the point of your story, the impersonation you did of the bitchy cashier cracked me up. I was able to formulate a VERY clear mental image haha.

  • I am a hearing person, however to an extent I understand this situation as I am a Canadian living in Germany. I am learning German and getting quite proficient, however every once in awhile when I don't understand something and I ask someone to repeat themselves they speak extremely slowly, purposefully over enunciation every word in an obvious condescending manner. I generally just shake it off because after all they are working at Wendy's etc and I have a PhD position that I love.

  • I am hearing, and I actually get that too, alot. I know there are stupid people in this world who aren't tolerant. I am learning ASL not only to better my understanding of this world, but also to be able to make life easier for any deaf customers I run into in my line of work. Plus I think they are better people half the time, lol. Usually in these situations I tend to think well she works at Wendy's. LOL! Plus you wouldn't want someone to be nicer just because someone is deaf. defeats equality

  • @Amionwi You are right on the money. I like your saying "wouldn't want someone to be nicer just because someone is deaf" - this is true. I don't want people to be extra nice just cuz I'm different and such.

  • Hi!

I think that her rudeness was unacceptable, I understand you were hungry, tired, and stressed from all the traffic going home but I think that her rudeness needed to be adressed. Maybe you could e-mail or write to the corporate manager and that stores manager or just go in and speak with the manager on another day. I think its great that you take into consideration the idea she mightve had a bad day too but still... you should say somthing. and hearie??? rly? okay. fine.

  • I think it is terrible when I would be out with my deaf friends (I am hearing) and a hearing person would start saying something about us like we couldn't hear them. Sometimes, I would just brush it off and not let them know I could hear what they said. But when it was something really bad, you would laugh when you see how shocked they are when I turn around and say "Hey, a**hole, I can hear you. Think before you speak next time." HAHA. People are uncomfortable with what is different. it's sad.

  • @rquiksilver182 Wow, indeed, it's sad. That reminds me one time back in mid 90's when a hearing friend of mine and I were at gas station pumping gas. We were signing to each other and he overheard a group of people mocking at our signs and whatnot. He decided to ignore and NOT to tell me until after we left. He said he knew I'd walk up to kick their asses. So he didn't want to tell me til after, oh well. The group didn't realize he actually heard him the whole time.

  • happns me before and i really don't like the facts that they can't learn sign langauge or understand what i try to orders but i wish all fast food should have sign langauge for deaf and hard hearing people

  • @sweetdeafangel23: I agree but not all locations have a large population of deaf people. So hiring someone on that basis is not easy. Spoken foreign languages are in more demand than ASL, so they would look for someone who speaks more than 1 spoken Foreign Language over ASL :( :(

  • @Piercedpixie56

    you right and i understand

  • Thanks for taking your frustration and turning it into this useful and funny video. And thanks for putting in English subtitles for people like me who can't understand ASL. I wish the worker had been as understanding of you as you are of non-deaf people.

  • if you think that happen only in america think again it does happen here in australia as well and i have no problems with them bec i can speak well even i am 100% deaf cheers

  • back in the day when I worked fast food I thought it was cool trying to figure out how to serve people with different abilities but I have to say some people were awesome about understanding this sin't the norm for you and some would fly off the handle A lady yelled at me for counting out her change witch I do for every one exclaiming i'm deaf not blindbut then there was this other guy that was regular he always had a huge smile when he showed up with his note he never complained about spelling

  • wow rude... :(

  • Lol I love "hearie."

Anyway, she might have been flustered or embarassed because she couldn't communicate with you effectively. Or maybe she just had a bad day. Either way...you dealt with it well :)

  • I have a temper with a sweet Southern Girl smile behind it. I usually don't go to manager unless someone really really really ticks me off. I will make a video soon about Walmart Pharmacy situation that got the lady FIRED!!!!! Thank you for a video idea!!!!

  • I have had the problem with broken hearing aids (alot) and a month w/o them, etc. (over and over again) I see people freak out when I hand them a note, like they don't know what to do. I also hand them a pen because some ppl, I cannot read their lips, and they feel more comfy writing? It is usually nice ppl but sometimes one that is irritated, like you met, maybe a bad day, but still professional to be nice.

  • Btw Bravo to you for keeping cool after such a hard day.

  • Awesome! They also don't like when you go through drive-through w/o saying anything. I can speak so I usually yell "deaf, coming to window" but still they are annoyed with me, like why didn't I come in? And also, ppl who tap me from behind. Why the heck would you TAP a deaf person from behind intentionally? No, they are not intentional, they just think I am not paying attention, and still after 43 years I still jump 4 feet up.

  • Hi geo, I too have had troubles with fast food employees. last week i was in drive through and pulled to window. I stated that I am deaf and cannot understand the voice box. a guy walked behind her in the kitchen and began laughing at me cause i couldnt understand. I spoke to the manager about my disgust in his employee's lack of respect to disabled people. It's a sad world we live in my friend

  • Hey deaffy121,

Aw man.. that was so horrible how he laughed, I'd be pissed if I see that. I'm glad you didn't let idiots get to you big time, we know that we are way better than them so basically we can laugh at them. ;-)

Hang it on there, you are awesome!

  • @seekgeo and deaffy121

that is really horrible! some people are so inconsiderate it is unbelievable. i am NOT deaf but im starting to learn, my nephew is 2 and he is deaf. i have to be able to communicate with him. Its very difficult for me to learn though! I

  • It's very sad, but there are some folks who work in fast food restaurants who are barely literate. That is, they cannot read. For example, I live near Detroit, and the adult literacy rate within the city limits is less than 50 percent. Yet these are the people in the employment pool when it comes to staffing restaurants, stores, etc. That is, in fact, why many restaurants have pictures on the cash register keys rather than words.

  • god what a bitch man, just remember the middle finger is a sign even someone like her can understand

  • Someone almost ran me over the other day and then yelled at me and gestured. An old man in a van marked "handicapped" no less! What I did was look very sad and deflated, as if he had ruined my whole day, and walked slowly and sadly away. I am hoping guilt tears him up inside. : (

  • Well.. this situation can be looked at from 2 perspectives [which some people tend not to think about]. We know what your side of the story is but maybe, as you said she might've had a bad day as well. Patience is a virtue and one that you have under control which is great! Any job working with the public is difficult, I work retail and some people are just predisposed to being rude and put off by guests. Lack of proper communication skills during different linguistic scenarios is a downfall..

  • (I ran out of room.) But yeah from your description it sounds like she was just flat out rude. Unfortunately you can never be sure what exactly a person is thinking when they behave the way they do.

  • Hey there.. I just found your videos and I really like how you subtitle them so I can understand - don't know ASL but really want to learn. It was nice that you were able to be patient with the lady and keep your cool. I know once when I worked at a grocery store I had a customer who only spoke Spanish trying to ask me a question in Spanish and I couldn't understand. Eventually I figured it out, but maybe they thought I was being rude even though I was more nervous and just trying to be helpful.

  • I agree with LynnRia, kill them with kindness, you have so much patience, spread it around :) People can be rude, mean and cruel they need kindness and understanding more than others. Poor them. You did the right thing. Next time, I would go in with the same note, with sizes written in Large letters, and a smile.

  • I like what you said about maybe she had a bad day too. I dont think people think about that. But .. it was not fair of her to take it out on you . If it had happened to me I would let it go once . TWICE.. No.. IF it had happened again. then I would do something.. talk to the manager or .. just get her attention and say.. um.. what did I do to deserve this kind of treatment??

  • Don't worry about it and enjoy your hamburger. If it happen again, even with different cashier, talk to a manager. Cheers.

  • I hate fast food restaurants except the ones close to my home. They are impatient and rude. There was no excuse for that sort of behavior. She should have repeated the question. Common sense would have told her that if you handed her your order on paper that you were needed to read her lips or have the question written down. What is this world coming to?

  • well, I might have said something b/c it's bad customer service. One time I'll admit when I was much much younger, a lady was not so nice to me at a mcdonald's. very impatient and "snotty" attitude. So when I got my order..I, OOPS!.. 'accidentally' spilled my shake on the floor which she had to clean up. I wouldn't do that today but I remember that :-P

  • my guess is the reason she wouldn't just say her question again is that she didn't realize that you could read her lips (ie she didn't notice you weren't looking the first time) and so she decided to try something else right away. but thats still no excuse to be rude!

  • I would have left it alone. I always assume they just happen to be in wrong time and wrong place hence the bad attitude. I know they don't fully realize it so I almost never take it directly. I'd just smile instead and try to brighten his/her day up a bit even if it means only one inch brighter then I have done my job because the ripple has started! :) Everything's always in motion, you cannot repel something, but you can "cancel" it out. ;) So be it.

  • No excuse for her to be condescending, even if she had bad day. When you're in a hurry and having bad day, last thing you want to do is "educate the public" and deal with problem. I agree with other people. Deal with it other day or write a letter to the company. ALWAYS GET THEIR NAME!!!

  • As I;m hearing whenever i have a problem like that I'll call later on when I'm not as annoyed. You could have gone back the next day and let the manager know. Like someone wrote before, that's not a good attitude for her to have. I've had bad days but when it comes to helping the customer you put that aside.

Hope you worked it out. ;)

  • I would have written a second note for cashier to get the manager, then when the manager came out I would have written a note to him that if the cashier's have attitudes that bad then perhaps you don't need my money that badly then walked out with a free meal. I know our local Wendy's will give you a free meal if an employee has a sour attitude while serving you.

  • You made a wise decision! I am a deaf cashier for years and years. I get rude hearing customers sometimes all i have to do is to smile and say have a good day leaving them to wonder why i smiled and said have a good day....But if it bothers you that much, i suggest you get the manager and explain....that kind of attitude is not tolerable for any cashiers

  • PULL OUT 45 COLT and SHOOT her in the head ha ha ha DONT Its joke yeah I know the feelin one time I get that attuidue I wrote down on piece of paper " RELAX & SMILE " and walked away I not even looked back LOL

  • I have been through similiar situations so many times! If there was a long line behind you, I would wait and talk to the manager another day about this woman's attitude. But don't let it go un noticed if she repeats her stinky behavior. If she cannot hold down a job at Wendy's there isn't much hope for her!

  • Comment box wouldn't let me type long one so here the remaining...

This had happened to me before... at end I open my LARGE coke" lid which was full of coke. I was so pissed at her, I said "can you read lips?" She was like YEAH! I said Fuck you! and I threw drink into her face and walked off noticing other customers applauded.

  • Jeez if that ever happened to me. I would personally give her worst nightmare. Such as give her nasty look, giving her hard time (making her more angry) and when she is really MAD. I'll speak with her manager. She had no excuse if she had bad day, or any other type of excuse. If she cannot perform her duty she should not be at front counter at all. Cashier duty is to make customer feel welcome.

  • Hope you did enjoyed eat. Go Wendy next day or other better day and see if she still do have bad attitude, then report to the manager and you need to find out what is really wrong with her! Yeah probably problem with the Deaf.

  • Let it go... Technically, unless she is too HARSH on you then you have your rights to report manager as needed. You have good attitude enuff! :D

  • oh my gosh, what a additude??????????? u know it is not an excuse if she has a bad day. too bad for her! she work with customers. i think it is better for u to talk to manager. it isn't too late of course. it would be fair for u to come there again with comfortable feeling.

  • SG, you were the "bigger" person and kept your cool. GOOD FOR YOU!! People in the "service" industry should learn that they are the ones who determine if we continue to do business there. Sometimes it's better to just 'let it go' like you did. Depends on the situation, how hungry you are, how badly you want to get home. smile. People like that won't last long at any job, and some day she will look back and wonder why she has no friends and no job!!

  • I am sure that she is very rude. It doesnt matter if she have bad day. Why did she come and work for? Her job is give people smile while she give the food to them. She have little common sense.

  • That's a nasty attitude she had indeed. But it's true, you never know what kind of day someone has had or what issues they're going through (that doesn't excuse her actions of course, but having a terrible day could be a reason for them). I think talking to the manager would have been a good idea, cause if you're in the customer service business you always have to treat your consumer with respect (at least until they are disrespectful to you).

  • Snotty clerk. You knew the obvious route to take. You sold yourself short cuz u wanted the food. :)

  • Oh what a BITCH! I7f it was me I would talk to the boss. No. she should have NOT let it fall on you even if she had a bad day! I always report em even hang up calls thru relay, if store is in town well here I come and talk to manager and It works! Discounts on what ever I want for my trouble and it works. It helps to teach the public. BTW hope ur dinner was good smile.

  • Write a note "It not my fault to be a Deaf" If she scoff at you then pretend accident as you bump the pop to her floor. She will know and understand.
