What it means by raw, is that the high country is very natural and untouched and unchanged by people, think raw beauty and raw talent.
They are unable to express their feeling for each other due to fear of others reactions. Homosexuality was not at all excepted, so if they did openly express their feelings they would become outcasts and have their lives at risk.
To me, it is so obvious that Heath was neither drunk nor on drugs nor being disrespectful...he was simply incredibly nervous, as can be seen from his body language, and heard in his stilted monologue and the slight tremor in his voice.

i agree, on jake website its reported that he is soo upset to talk about heath. and where he is filming his new film, they have hired more staff to protect him. and one of heath former staff told a website, that they were very good friends and that heath was crazy about jake as a good friend, and that is why he made jake his daughter godfather. our thoughts are with you jake.
