It might be Kennel Cough. It's also called Bordetella. I'm not sure whether my dog has it but it sounds a lot alike. If your dog is old or young, its really hard to fight it off and it can result in pneumonia. That's why I've been up since 2 in the morning. My dog's been spitting up phlegm. My mom is taking her to the vet in the morning. Also, Bordetella is really contagious and you don't have to get it from kenneling your dog. It's an airborne virus. Get a vaccine. Hope for the best.

@Tommit9 Naw, with small dogs there is a known condition, its not harmful in the least, my pom does this too, I used to think her throat was swollen or something but the vet said its just a reverse sneeze.

A coughing dog is NEVER funny! I know because I have a female JRT that has an enlarged heart and coughs. Poor thing. The meds have helped some.

shut up your not a veterinarian. overweight dogs are proven to live 25% longer than skinny dogs due to the amount of a special chemical called "polycytons" these polycytons are found in dog fatness and stimulate the heart and lungs by releasing energy. similarly to how mexicans stimulate the economy by being a cheap source of labor............. When my Bichon does that I say "is there a hairy thing comin' up? Ya better get er' swallered back down ya might need it someday!" what I mean is that his hairy asshole might be coming out! A dog would look pretty funny with his ass hangin' out of his mouth! That little hairy thing is pretty important, if you're a dog, so make sure dog owners when your dog is having a "hairy fit" that they git her back down:)

my mother had a dog that would do the same thing. after seeing 3 vets, we were told the same thing. old age. after he died (with his nose in my shoe), we found out he had throat cancer. we were devestated. i just hope this isn't the case with yours.

It's very insulting having strangers like you make comments which question our love for our animals. We are all animal lovers in our family and have rescued injured animals and taken in stray animals. We would never let an animal in our care suffer or remain in an unhealthy state!!! We have sought 2 individual opinions from trained and registered vets and both have given us the same conclussion.

fair enough... I guess my reply was a bit over the top... it's just that I've had to remove several comments like that already and we really love our dog... he sleeps inside every night (used to be on our bed when he could jump up on to it) and he has had a wonderful life in our family. he is a very loved member of our family. he is not uncomfortable with the cough and we have seen 2 different vets and both said it's old age. If you have a problem then its YOUR PROBLEM... get some help!
