The ref killed himself 3 years after this fight, and Kim's mother killed herself 18 months after the fight. A tragedy all the way around. But not have 15 rounds would not have saved his life. Ruelas-Garcia was 12 round fight--ending 15 rounders was ridiculous and favors boxers who start fast.
This is the fight that killed 15 round fights. WBC ended it right after this fight, the WBA in 88 and the IBF in 89. It was an overreaction to the events-no one had died in the ring in Nevada in 50 years. They should have at least made the limit 13 rounds to kill tiebreakers in 10 pt must system.

Kim almost had this match won. That's what makes this even a bit more tragic... this counterfactual thinking where you can say, "What would've happened if Mancini had quit when he was considering it?" Who knows? Kim was badly done up by the 14th, but there's no doubt in my mind that what truly did him in was not the hook at 6'26" but hitting the canvas so hard at 6'27". I watched this fight on a Saturday afternoon , I wouldn't have if I knew what the outcome would be. A lot younger I saw the Giliette Friday night at the fights when Benny Parrette died . @TheHulfachor There are two types of muscles, slow twitch and fast twitch. Most of the boxers at higher weights built fast twitch muscles for power, whereas the guys in the lower divisions focus their training on stamina. There are lots of research articles out there explaining the advantages and disadvantages of both. Hope that clears it up.

It seems to me that the worst damage Kim suffered was due to falling backwards against the edge of the ring. - The ring is much less flexible around its perimeter.
This also forced his brain to move strongly in the opposite direction as all of Mancini's blows.
So it raises the question - Should rings be constructed differently, with more give or some kind of padding around their perimeters?

I watched this fight on a Saturday afternoon , I wouldn't have if I knew what the outcome would be. A lot younger I saw the Giliette Friday night at the fights when Benny Parrette died . My dad was standing yelling at the TV to stop the fight . Scared me I was to young to really get it but I knew something bad was happening. I was born in 56' so i was probably 8 or 9

a lesson that concussions can be fatal,. The person can appear normal right after then lapse into senselessness very quickly as the brain swells. I've seen this happen with car accidents and the person can have no visible sign of injury but within 10 minutes they are almost unconscious after appearing normal.

Most of the boxers at higher weights built fast twitch muscles for power, whereas the guys in the lower divisions focus their training on stamina. There are lots of research articles out there explaining the advantages and disadvantages of both. Hope that clears it up.

It seems to me that the worst damage Kim suffered was due to falling backwards against the edge of the ring. - The ring is much less flexible around its perimeter.
This also forced his brain to move strongly in the opposite direction as all of Mancini's blows.
So it raises the question - Should rings be constructed differently, with more give or some kind of padding around their perimeters?
