I think what most people overlook about Afghanistan is that America funded them to fight the Soviets full well knowing one day they would fight the very people they armed, come on people do the math, who would be worse for the West to fight? the Soviet Union in all its might which would have probably been the end of the world given the nuclear weapons everywhere or a bunch of rag tag rebels? in all things who we're fighting now are the lesser of two evils, argue it all you want, but i'm right.
USSR would never launch a nuclear attack on USA unless provoked, so u're completely wrong. So much talking about democracy and bullshit, but at the end of the day u yankees only care about your interests. Hypocrites.

@WunderDoob That's more a problem with internal fiscal discipline and resource allocation and waste rather than a problem with any outside enemy we vowed to defeat.
Yeah, it would be a problem with fiscal irresponsibility. The point is: your tax money doesn't really go anywhere. It goes into the black hole of our national debt. You might as well stop paying taxes.
what i dont understand is that if they send the paratroopers to clear the the surrounding hills and they even had hinds ahead of the convoy how the hell did this ambush happen?
Too bad Soviet Union/Russia had to deal with U.S. funding the Mujahadeen, U.S. gave them billions, plus the top notch weapons to fight the Russians, I wonder how U.S. would do if Russians started funding Mujahadeen/Al Qaeda with their weapons/tactics etc...

@WRH90059 I think its lower. But the way Taliban is wining is just because of Guerilla. If it was a real war like ww2, USA would win easily. Taliban is smart, no one can know if they are a taliban or a civilian, that makes it hard for USA. by the way, america never lost a single battle against the taliban.
@THETANK249 It could be lower, who knows ? Well as technology advances war changes.Tactics and strategy change.Guerilla warfare is "real war" now.Its used by rebels in africa.By the taliban and alq queda and also the VC and NVA in vietnam. Not to mention the chechan's against the russians.Actually the USA have lost several battles. Many during the Fallujah take over. Also the US is loosing in several other provinces in afghanistan
@THETANK249 Just look at the big picture, the US isn't winning the war in Afghanistan, there is no progress. They kill one group of fighters, another pops out. @Unit987654321 During the History. No one ever succeced to attack Afghanistan. No one ever. Everyone lost because of economy failings. Turkmens, Arabs, Alexander The Great, Genghis Khan, British empire, Russians and Now USA with 36 other countires
@THETANK249 but we lost the vietnam war it was tottally pointless to say the least and it lasted for ten years and because we worried about the spread of communnism
but it was truely a heroic battle - the majahedeens attaked 12(!) times during the 12hour long fight with no avai and never took control over the height 3234
Guys, who is interested in the real historical details of this fight there is a wikipedia article about it.
in two words, the fight really took place in 1988, not 1989, the 9th Company consisted of 39 soldiers, 6 of which were killed (not all of them like in the movie) , 28 injured, they wasn't left alone either
@zenoist2 Ironic doesn't even begin to describe it. Our short-sighted leaders were so convinced that the Soviet Union was an "evil empire" that they would aid anyone against them. And the Soviet leaders were so convinced that we were evil that they did the same for us in Vietnam. Our generation is stuck in the mess they left us.
@zenoist2 Not the same Afghans and not a few years later. These people that were fighting the Russians were fighting for nationalism, that's why USA was funding them.
@zenoist2 the funny thing is, we funded, armed, and trained the EXACT same people we would be fighting only 12 years after the soviet withdrawl.
i remember watching a documentarty and a senior mujahideen fighter was talking. he wasnt a new brainwashed extremist taliban fighter either, he was one of the original ones, and seemed very educated.
he said "the russians came & we defeated them with weapons given to us by the west. now the west is here and we are using the same weapons against them.'
movie is overdramatic and battle scenes are overdone in a cheesy way, but as far as entertainment factor goes, it has very good production values, comparable to the best Western movies.
@kimskis You're a very stupid human being that's completely obvlivious to real life because of hollywood brainwashing. Go on and say how Saving Private Ryan was over done to....moron.
those who think soviets did a crap job there only need to imagine what would be happening now if Taliban had an unlimited money of one of the superpowers and sofisticated anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons. Now Taliban fights with makeshift improvised bombs and looks like they are winning. Soviets were on the forefront of western world versus muslims. Having withdrawn from Afganistan they faced this war on their own soil. It would have been better for the whole world if Russians were there.
@valerysav1 ehhh you're kind of embellishing the whole thing, the only real high tech weapon the mujahideen were equipped with were FIM-92 Stingers, and even they were only mass issued in the mid to late 80's. Other than that they were only supplied with communications equipment and small arms (a portion of which were actually purchased from corrupt soviet officials within the military)
@valerysav1 "Soviets were on the forefront of western world versus muslims." this is the most stupid sentence i ever read. pull your head out of your ass.
Gotcha. I'll tell people who make another WWII movie that they need M16s, Woodland BDUs and computers strapped to their arms, but that doesn't matter because it's a movie.
You see, the majority of viewers dont know things like that or dont want to care(its just a movie, movies are for entertaiment). Thats why it doesn't matter. But then there are clowns like you who just got to show off to make themselfs feel they are cool. End of discussion, CLOWN.
Okay, name-call all you like. It's unfortunate that you had to take a simple comment about a historical inaccuracy so deeply like if I beat up your parents.
I really didn't take anything deeply, more likely i took it very lightly since I love when people are being idiotic about something as meaningless as this.
No. Pointing out something that meaningless (its meaningless becouse people dont know or they dont care, cause its a movie. Didnt i already tell you this?) out of a movie is idiotic, nobody cares, thats why its idiotic.
The film looks interesting however it depicts the red army as being totaly inept and mistified by the fighting skill of the mujihadeen. I hardly think that was the case as with the americans in veitnam it was a proxy war between two superpowers. the u.s. provided most of the know how that caused the soviets to spin thier wheels until it became too costly to stay and win a decisive victory. I would bet the reds won most of the engagments that they encountered.
Before talking about the USSR's mistakes, remember about Iraq! There's not the Soviet army in Afghan anymore, and what about yours?Leave Iraq and don't make bids for Iran's oil.Do your own business!Stop killing Russian kids!Stop making movies about Russian mafia!Don't be afraid of Putin! We Don'tCareAbout You!Take it easy.Respect our soldiers! It's not "a bunch of shitty special effects" or “a banal hollywood-fighter”, it's a real story, the way it was.
maybe we should have let the soviets fuck these guys up. now we have to deal with them. does anyone want to know how bin laden got his ak 74? he killed a soviet soldier with his bare hands. that motherfucker
The Soviet war in Afghanistan was a ten-year conflict involving the Soviet Union, supporting the Marxist government of the Democratic Republic of Afghanistan at their own request against the Mujahideen Resistance. The mujahideen found other support from a variety of sources including the United States, United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt and other Muslim nations through the context of the Cold War.
@xmiihanix That makes no sense and I hope you see why. The Americans did indeed supply the Mujahideen (not the Talibans, they had not risen to power yet) but not with soviet weaponry (where would they get it anyway? It's not like Russia would sell them some or they can manufacture it themself).
@Valles923 I like the Kord 12,7mm heavy machine gun more, which shows up in some fight scenes and in the end battle scene, one trooper even picks it up and shoots it from the hip.
@reddragonguy65 It seems you have been playing too many video games. After you live in a war and you stalked a man down and you have hunted a man down on equal terms where he can kill you, you loose interest for video games. Youll see that the catastrophic loss of life and property is not the same as pressing a little button on your joystick.
Well if the hinds weren't there, there would be no action. It could also be that since they fly ahead as scouts that they did not notice the battle and kept going, and by the time they arrived at the battlefield the battle was already finished. There are many reasons.
Trying to bring Socialism and enlightment to these barbarians was a lost cause from the get go. Let them live in a perpetual middle age, with constant tribal warfare, doped on religion and opium.
...and now the U.S. is trying to bring democracy, When its really just supporting the U.S. Military-Industrial-Complex... The dam country wants to make a profit off of war; turn it into a capitalist venture. I've got two buddys already deployed there from my unit, and i'm probably gonna go with in the next year... F-Afganistan....
Stay safe man, this country is amputating its best limbs for this BS war, just dont get why we need to occupy that shithole, would think that periodic bombing of their threatning mud brick facilities should suffice...
Big nations lose small wars. Because the very idea of partisan warfare is that it can't be won or lost, unless you establish concentration camps, kill all civilians and level cities.
The only way to win with this kind of strategy is to be an even bigger son of a bitch than your enemy - indiscriminately kill and mutilate all civilians, men women and children, block by block.
I agree, if you bring back the Mongol Horde... The tactics you describe would be unsustainable politicaly for any democracy, on a cynical note, even financially. See it as pest control, you will never get rid of them just keep them in check. Until that one day perhaps...
America has been trying to do that since World War 1. If you notice, they joined the war during the final year of the war. Reason being? Because then they can say "We won, you lost, so you owe us money for starting this". Brazil declared war on Germany a few months before the war ended and got a share in the money Germany owed to the world.
@Unit987654321 If I'm not correct, the U.S. was the kindest to Germany.... Signing a completely different treaty with Germany because the didn't want anything to do with the unfair punishment that was Versailles... Even trading with Germany after the war... It's a sad thing how much the U.S. is blamed for everything...
@zeek997733 Unfortunately, they are usually responsible. The media plays them off to be little angels, but if you simply look behind the shroud of ignorance the true nature of the nation is far worst than many.
@OtherSideOfArgument Who knows man. What power do common people hold these days? U.S. citizens are nice people. The government may be corrupt but honestly, who isn't? Sad world...
@zeek997733 to be fair some historians interpret that as greed the fact that america joined the war late then was insensitive to how much suffering the kaiser had caused Russia, France and Britain also U.S.A did sign the treaty of Versailles, but your right that America saw the bigger picture they wanted to help Germany they knew Germany was not the kaiser, France just wanted to punish and destroy Germany and Britain, well Britain just wanted some money co it could pay for the war.
@BlackNeg Solcialism is an economic system, where the means of production are owned by the government. In exchange for this, the people get free education, health and low cost housing. The idea is that, if people don't have to worry about the necessities of life, they can dedicate temselves to sporting and cultural pursuits, live in peace and tranquility. And the wealth of the nation is shared equally among its citizens, to eliminate poverty. Is that equal to barbarism?
@klubKropotkin agreed even bringing socialism to these savages is 100 times better than what they have now (i am american so i genetically must reject any form socialism but it is to me as good or a little worse than democracy but i greatly respect Russia and its people)
@xBringinSexyBack95x The vast majority of Socialist government in the world are western european Democracies... Political and military allies of the US, Nato, etc...
@yuri870 What are you talking about? -This is an imitation of a classic cheesy Hollywood action scene. Slow motion, defaced and dehumanized enemies, fallen sarge, tragic music... In what way is it different?
@yuri870 Replace the actors with Americans and keep the film the same and wouldn't even tell the difference, this is a hollywood war movie made by Russa
Yes, it's an actual movie, but damn hard to find. Even here in Finland. (Normally Russian movies wouldn't register on the radar screen of video rental stores here, but since it's a partially Finnish production...)
Oh, and I hate it when politics get mixed into Youtube comments. This war was brutal. Accept it.
I wasn't addressing you in particular, just about everyone. The Soviet-Afghan war of 1979-1989 was particularly heavy-handed: no mercy expected and no mercy given.
What bothers me is the recent pro-Soviet interpretations of history, mocking the memory of those who gave their lives to defend Russia.
Только-что по французскому каналу смотрел что наемным воиннам аллаха так дали в конце 80-х, что они побежали как тараканы из афгана и стали организовавать террористические ячейки в своих странах...
wait a sec the russkies hosed evry thing that move from the air with hinds and raped women its cool that got they asses handed to them by sheep hearders the same thing happen to us in nam no big deal
Well if we killed everything that moved with hinds, then there would be no women to rape, and if we raped all the women then we didn't kill everything that moved, take your pick.
americans are cowards if you wanna see americans running just watch the news they need more soldiers to handle the situation in afghanistan, imperialists invaders in the land that kicked the american forefathers the english empire out

Well, if you personally don't give a shit about historical accuracy, then don't reply then. It's that simple.

Whatevs then. But just to remind: Its only a movie, it isnt important at all.
TheLoukku 1 year ago

P.S. Though you should be afraid of Putin:-)

@Kurt004 nah, the Afghans used American supplied tech, like the grenade launcher that takes out the tanks tread.

@Kurt004 Americans, at that time, supplied the Taliban with Soviet weapons
xmiihanix 1 year ago
@xmiihanix That makes no sense and I hope you see why. The Americans did indeed supply the Mujahideen (not the Talibans, they had not risen to power yet) but not with soviet weaponry (where would they get it anyway? It's not like Russia would sell them some or they can manufacture it themself).

@reddragonguy65 It seems you have been playing too many video games. After you live in a war and you stalked a man down and you have hunted a man down on equal terms where he can kill you, you loose interest for video games. Youll see that the catastrophic loss of life and property is not the same as pressing a little button on your joystick.

one question: where the fuck are the hinds gone?
MarkTools 2 years ago 2
Well if the hinds weren't there, there would be no action. It could also be that since they fly ahead as scouts that they did not notice the battle and kept going, and by the time they arrived at the battlefield the battle was already finished. There are many reasons.

...and now the U.S. is trying to bring democracy, When its really just supporting the U.S. Military-Industrial-Complex... The dam country wants to make a profit off of war; turn it into a capitalist venture. I've got two buddys already deployed there from my unit, and i'm probably gonna go with in the next year... F-Afganistan....

klubKropotkin 2 years ago
Big nations lose small wars. Because the very idea of partisan warfare is that it can't be won or lost, unless you establish concentration camps, kill all civilians and level cities.
The only way to win with this kind of strategy is to be an even bigger son of a bitch than your enemy - indiscriminately kill and mutilate all civilians, men women and children, block by block.
aarrcchhoonntt 2 years ago
I agree, if you bring back the Mongol Horde... The tactics you describe would be unsustainable politicaly for any democracy, on a cynical note, even financially. See it as pest control, you will never get rid of them just keep them in check. Until that one day perhaps...
klubKropotkin 2 years ago
America has been trying to do that since World War 1. If you notice, they joined the war during the final year of the war. Reason being? Because then they can say "We won, you lost, so you owe us money for starting this". Brazil declared war on Germany a few months before the war ended and got a share in the money Germany owed to the world.
Unit987654321 2 years ago 16
@Unit987654321 If I'm not correct, the U.S. was the kindest to Germany.... Signing a completely different treaty with Germany because the didn't want anything to do with the unfair punishment that was Versailles... Even trading with Germany after the war... It's a sad thing how much the U.S. is blamed for everything...
zeek997733 10 months ago 7
@zeek997733 Unfortunately, they are usually responsible. The media plays them off to be little angels, but if you simply look behind the shroud of ignorance the true nature of the nation is far worst than many.

zeek997733 2 months ago 4
@zeek997733 to be fair some historians interpret that as greed the fact that america joined the war late then was insensitive to how much suffering the kaiser had caused Russia, France and Britain also U.S.A did sign the treaty of Versailles, but your right that America saw the bigger picture they wanted to help Germany they knew Germany was not the kaiser, France just wanted to punish and destroy Germany and Britain, well Britain just wanted some money co it could pay for the war.

Are you implying socialism is anything different from barbarism?
BlackNeg 1 year ago
@BlackNeg Solcialism is an economic system, where the means of production are owned by the government. In exchange for this, the people get free education, health and low cost housing. The idea is that, if people don't have to worry about the necessities of life, they can dedicate temselves to sporting and cultural pursuits, live in peace and tranquility. And the wealth of the nation is shared equally among its citizens, to eliminate poverty. Is that equal to barbarism?

Yes, it's an actual movie, but damn hard to find. Even here in Finland. (Normally Russian movies wouldn't register on the radar screen of video rental stores here, but since it's a partially Finnish production...)
Oh, and I hate it when politics get mixed into Youtube comments. This war was brutal. Accept it.

oh really? thats unfortunate... you werent talking to me about politics were you? because i wasnt talking about politics... all wars are brutal
amerikaistwunderbar6 2 years ago
"All wars are brutal"
Well, no shit, Jason?
I wasn't addressing you in particular, just about everyone. The Soviet-Afghan war of 1979-1989 was particularly heavy-handed: no mercy expected and no mercy given.
What bothers me is the recent pro-Soviet interpretations of history, mocking the memory of those who gave their lives to defend Russia.
Like: "Finland invaded SU in 1939."
Yeah, and I'm Superman.
