  • @emilykocsis That's the video for "Anything." It also has Dave in the shower.

  • See the doors about to swing both ways, See the answer appearing in the gaze.....

  • Peter Murphy, Rozz Williams, David Vanian.... They're all great!!

  • Splitting hairs is so ridiculous. Let's all agree that it's all just so effing good.

  • Easily the best bass line in all of goth.

  • I´ll never get tired of this song. It´s perfect. One of my favourite songs to play at halloween...

  • thanks to Bryn Merrick on Bass,,,,,

  • AHHHHHHHHH I Dave´s voice, the bass... <3<3<3 I love this song!

  • good sir Dude, I feel I must respectfully oppose your proposition pending further evidential criteria, but do pray tell and enlighten us of Rozz Williams.. ??

  • bass driven goth rock....EXCELLENT!

  • This is proper GOTH not like the tripe thats round these days. I wish le mont cranston aka dave vanion would come back with a new album?

  • Superb! ... regardless of other comments.

  • To kelly14UK

Both his parents were from slovenia, not Yugoslavia.

And started on keyboards but as you can see went onto lead guitar.

    Wrote this song too!

  • @okcomputer1016- They're definitely different if you compare the album bthe album Damned,Damned,Damned with grave disorder. They've got a new one out called so, who's paranoid? which i'm eagerly watching my mailbox for it's arrival. One of the best bands ever!

  • Great Song loved every min of it ^-^

  • I'd love to hear Nightshift and Deadbeat Dance on YT. WHO sung on that other Shadow B Side, "Would You"?

Please clear up a 20 odd year conundrum Lol!

  • This song actually makes me feel very happy.

  • Thanks Beatmyguest001.

  • One of my favourite bands.

  • who plays guitar on this album?

  • @okcomputer1016 Roman. He's the tall guy from Wales. One of his parents were from Yugoslavia.. He did keyboards as a fan and sessionist on Strawberries, and the tour.

  • i do listen to all these albums but i still always marvel at how different their albums are

  • @okcomputer1016 They're really quite different when you compare DAMNED,DAMNED,DAMNED with GRAVE DISORDER. I'm waiting for SO,WHO'S PARANOID? to arrive in my mailbox!

  • Most many-sided punk rock band ever!...

  • this mi fav song owta all of them me an dad allways boggied 2 this song an he wud also play it 2 me n his getar!!!!!! love ella merrick

  • I love this song. So many boring nights at work passed quickly with it in my ears ... but I always think the bassline starts off a little bit like the 'Postman Pat' theme tune! :)

  • i used to have this.

  • Ahh dave vanian, Such a charismatic vampiric hunk.

  • @twinklesprinkle12 This comment made me laugh for some odd reason haha. In a good way though. ^_^

  • this is my first ever damned song, and i think that it will always have a special place in my heart. i like all their music that i have heard, whether it is their earlier punk stuff or their more goth-rock work. they are just amazing!

  • This is the video that turned me on to The Damned, back in the early 90s! Thanks for sharing

  • Damn, this is good rawhide goth, tough times buddy, look out, yikes minidavis

  • Vanian IS HOT in this video!!! I, too, love the "western twang". VvvvvV

  • buenas epocas

  • the singer's hot. in a gothic glam way.

  • Classic! Haven't heard this since the 80"s Love the western twang

  • This is my favourite track from the Damned! I used to listen to this, some years later after its release, along Xmal Deutschland's "Matador", and Killing Joke's "Adorations", plus a lot of Slowdive and shoegazing things.

  • i was 16 when this came out and lovin them still

  • WHOSE RESPONSIBLE THIS

  • I was 14 and well into them, The Damned were by far the best group to come out the other side of the 70's punk scene! Takes me right back! Excellent thankyou so much for posting this!

  • Bellissimo disco!!!

  • i just found that album at home in vinyl , still in very good state . love that one ...

  • It's gotta cool gothy rawhide type of sound. I like it...

  • I am an 80's graduate but never heard this song till now. it's great, what a voice..

  • Perfect. *faints*

  • met Dave at Knotts Berry Farm Halloween Haunt in 1987 going back and forth in a long line...we talked as we passed each other time and time again..I was about the only deathrocker and I knew about them being in town, so I asked him how their show went with the Ramones the night before and we struck up a convo...he was the kewlest and got me and my gf into their Palladium show the next night. We got to hang out with them in the trailers in the back parking lot of the Palladium....what a night..

  • godammit, he's so sexxy!!

  • Wow 1985! I was 21 years old when this album came out. I remember the album being milk white it was soo kewl! Good times; I was going dancing at the Goth Clubs, throwing up in my car from drinking too much, going home and having sex with people who's first names I didn't know. YEP GOOD TIMES

  • wow, I was 10. makes me feel young, but I knew who they were and really got into them a year or so later.

  • I love getting nostalgic like this! I also enjoy when others get nostalgic about their life experiences. I had a great time when I was younger; going to Otis-Parsons School of design,(B.A. Fashion Design.) Seemed like their was a dance club or band to see almost every night. Life was so much simpler then.

  • Dave Vanian, won't you marry me???

  • HA HA HA! Dave Vanian won't you marry me? Yeah me!

  • David Vanian IS the GOTH FATHER!!!!

  • I agree with you 100%

  • Way fucking more goth, then then Robert Smith ever was!

  • @xyaqua Would his brother be Peter murphy then? Going by that logic. lol

  • @xyaqua Dave Vanian and Andrew Eldritch ;>

  • @xyaqua Actually The Goth Father is Rozz Williams...Sorry

  • @mrbelmont2000 Peter Murphy is the Goth Father!!! sorry....

  • @letycure Well....ok then Peter is the goth father but rozz perfected goth

  • This song brings back some awesome memories.

    5 stars

  • D.V. The ultimate Goth!! Modern day groups can only follow in his footsteps! I can remember hunting shops for months just to find one item of clothing or a pair of shoes to be a 70's Goth.lol

So called Goth groups today are nothing more than sausage jockeys in drag.

  • Very nice tune!

  • they still play? do they play their punk stuff anymore? like.. in concerts

  • I saw them in 2002 and they played lots of their punk stuff. I'm hoping to see them again this year, so we'll see.

  • yes

  • I see them every time they come to Glasgow and it is mostly their punk stuff they play! i doubt the rest of the band would agree to a renaissance of phantasmagoria lol!

  • I love the Limit Club cover<33333

  • EXELLENT :)

  • Yeah... I miss them.

  • i think i know where johnny depp got his look for sweeney todd now

  • look at marc bolan of trex from the late 70's he was sporting a similar look check out dreamy lady on you tube

  • Marc was a beauty just like Dave. Even prettier, actually.

  • David Vanian (Letts): the Gothfather

  • Blixa bargeld?

  • What a band, an what a guy Dave Vanian is mmmmmm, still sound as great now as they did over 20 year ago

  • anybody here like the Phantom Chords? Nobody ever talks about them, but I think they're great. Dave Vanian sings in that group.

  • la music est morte depuis 1995

  • I've loved this tune since i was a dipshit teenager.....I never knew there was a video to it ......guess I'm still a dipshit

  • I didn't know there was a video for this song either. I've always loved this jam...i guess im a jackass too.

  • Not jackasses. The media kept it all very well hidden, banned from view ... all that.

    :-)

  • the damned always will be classed as punk. phantasmagoria was their way of moving with the times, as dave vanian put it. lots of bands were doing it then- like when the stranglers did `strange little girl`. it certainlyshowed a new side to the damned, and people who didnt like the hard core punk started to listen to them. they r bloody talented. still are.

  • Not Country-Gothic, it's Pyschobilly, the sub-genre of the Goth genre. Good song.

  • psycobilly is before rockabilly then comes Punkabilly and Deathrock not the death metal, this is goth

dave vanian called himself goth back tehn 1979's or earlier

  • Great and very enjoyable song! Due to its rhytm I would call it´s style "country-gothic" :)

  • it good it my dad

  • eh?

  • I Like This Band.

This Song Is One Of My Favorites ^^

  • Youre caught in a trap BABY

  • I forget the album, but it listed the 20 or so members of the damned, a typically four member band. As f'd as they were, Vanian held the band together, and phantasmagoria shows the real artistry behind all the craziness.

This was no sell out, but a symphony, playing the first 5 songs of this album is a real musical feast, the emotions drag you to the bottom of the mosat of the castle, then lift you up with 'there'll come a day'.

    vivaldi did thematic compositions too...

    all hail dave!

  • Sanctum Sanctorum is incredible.

  • im amazed there are folk who still love the damned! and feel the vibe lol! id love to know whether there are any young fans out there? at 31 im still young to like them lol! x

  • I'm 45, even played punk a few times. The damned were great, but David Vanian really held the band together (as it were) through all the members, and he was really musically talented and creative. He didn't substitute emotion for artistic effort.

check out early wire, pink flag is a classic, the three johns were pretty cool too.

They were so much better to listen to than the Ramones.

    peace

  • I totally agree, dave was really innovative for the time and experimented! The damned di do punk the dave was the true goth and deviate with the dark side lol with phastasmagoria etc He liked the Hammer films I think lol. I think he took it far more seriously than the rest of the band. I just love them an Dave! an it's great to meet other fans as I am lonely lol x

  • Exactly! Dave was very consistent. As the bio on the back of one of the albums says, even rat left for a time. The lyrics were good to start with, and just got better, deeper. and the whole thematic album sound was so cool, not the easiest thing to do.

As i said before, David Vanian IS the _Gothfather_!!!.

  • please excuse my typos! my 'd' button doesn't work unless I batter it lol!

  • lol hahahahaha mad

  • Yes !

  • Yep, I'm a young'n

  • yes, i'm a teen and really love them -- seeing them soon on their east coast tour! :D

thinking i'm going to be one of the youngest there, except the fans who bring their kids haha.

  • i'm 17 but even that seems a bit old to me

  • still cant get over how beautiful dave looks here.

    this song is epic.

  • Great song! A dark classic!

  • G.O.T.H.

  • This song is the 'theme tune' to my childhood. Love it still.

  • Yeah, It was mine too, but I was a grown up teen ager, I realize now that I´ve always been dark!! and also I check that all the main goth issues that appeared afterwards were already featured with this amazing band. A pity they didn´t make it great, just a cult band.

  • This song will be with me forever. Forever. I mean it... it's been with me for so many years and hasn't left me

    Great video accompanied too

  • que tiempos....

  • this song = perfection :) :)

  • Phantasmagoriaistic ☻♫☻♫☻♫☻♫☻♫

  • Don't think ☺-~

  • So glad they still rock on. First heard this song on The Young Ones, but never heard much of them afterward. I remember a whip in the Young Ones video, I think.

  • On The Young Ones they played "Nasty", not "Shadow of Love".

  • you're right. Since I posted that I got the box set of the Young Ones.

It was still one of my secret favorite songs, and that's coming from a former hardcore metalhead headbanger from the 80's. I'd love to see it on Rock Band or Guitar Hero.

  • The Damned, The Cramps and Motorhead are very different bands but they belong to a group of us that have a hard time sharing. I'm just happy I was around when music was really good. Maybe people should stop arguing with each other about music and start getting pissed at the music industry for all the crap they try to pass as music now. Just a thought.

  • Great song and cool video... the song is almost like Gothic Rockabilly

  • Gothic Rockabilly--LOL. I think we have a new subgenre.

I'll have to watch some Rev Horton Heat after this.

  • No... actually Gothabilly has been a genre for over ten years.

  • love this, dave and the boys totally spellbinding.

  • This video is great, one of the best in the 80's. Amo a mi sobri.yo, el tio!

  • at least they are still touring and Vanian is still fit

  • This sound & vision,

    would make Sergio Leone proud.

  • legal

  • the tags can be whatever they need to be to attract certain different groups of people who may be interested. you could put hair and make-up if you wanted to. they can be anything.

  • Bc they were the ones to start the goth trend

  • Yea thats true but this was/is a goth band

  • the damned rock sorry they have there own sound

now go back and play your fall out boy CD.

  • Cool video for a brilliant song! The extended mix is awesome, too.
