What amazes me still about this monster EF4 was how this storm moved in a southerly direction. Most tornadic storms move southwest to northeast and this one definitely didn't as it moved south toward I-70. I'm from that area and it still amazes me how the twister lifted just before it went over interstate.

I was about 1/4 of a mile from an EF-3 back in early June here in IL and i was freaked out. it was about 9:30pm and i didn't see it until it was that close. I'm with ESDA and i knew there was a tornado on the ground but I had no idea it was that close until the lightning flashed and I saw it to my SW. These guys are amazing storm chasers. They have the right to be excited. Monster EF-4!

It takes some really crazy people to have the guts to stay out and video one of those things. All I could think of while I was watching, was how many houses did that cloud go over and how many lives were destroyed because of it. You guys may think it's beautfiul, and in some ways it is, but something so deadly and so destructive should not be taken so lightly.

We've done this for years and ALWAYS report what we see to the National Weather Service (As we did the night of the Greensburg tornado, which was uploaded recently) and this tornado was in an open field, no structures, just trees and dirt. We were not cheering the tornado on, but rather excited that it was coming directly at us. I grew up in Dighton, KS just south of Quinter, and have family that lived in Quinter...I know this area well.

Also, we lost our windshield 2 minutes after this trying to turn around from large hail.  And at 4.00 a gallon, we do this on our own time/dime, and sometimes for clear/blue skies. So pardon us, if we sound a little excited, it was our first photogenic tornado in a year. You never know when these "crazies" might be filming and reporting to your local national weather service so you and your family can be safe.

Word now is there were multiple tornados. A young couple from Colo was killed on the highway. It took a while for them to be found.

Well part of it is the Enhanced Fujita scale is more accurate as to how much wind does a certain amount of damage. In the case of both F5 and EF5 you would have total or near total destruction. Wind speed for and EF5 is anything over 200mph for F5 it was 261 to 318. There was consideration of creating an F6 category after one tornado reached 318mph before the scale was replaced. Both scale look primarily at damage. The new scale is similar but more complicated.

I think you're thinking of the one on May 3, 1999. It was that one. Destroyed parts of the suburbs outside Oklahoma City, particularly Moore which has been hit by tornadoes in 1998, 1999, and 2003. They seem to have some pretty bad luck.
