Hey Brian, Got any suggestions on how to run a 16th birthday party for a girl? Weddings are the main part of my business, but a friend asked me to DJ her daughters 16th birthday party. What sort of things do you say on the mic? Do you do any games? How do you motivate them? Any special songs you'd play? Thanks a lot!
I know that this party is important to you as you want to give the very best to your friend. Have you thought of referring your friend to a DJ who enjoys Teen Dances? You'll be helping your friend's daughter by giving her entertainment that her and her friends will enjoy and remember for the rest of their lives. You'll also be helping a fellow dj - one who would enjoy the gig even more than you! Remember, there is more than enough business for everyone.
Hey he always does that though lol. When doing school dances the grinding thing can become an issue. Typically I use the music to pull the kids off each other like water on dogs lol. Simply moving in and out of the grinding music if possible but its a fine line to walk.
Sometimes that's all you can do. Some of the Freshman were VERY determined and were even trying to grind at 128 BPM. Looked reduculous, but... well they gave it a try. HA!
Tough topic...been up against it more than once. Easier now that I'm a Dad to think that, as these are minors, we, as attending adults must take some responsibility for the behavior we condone or actually encourage.
We live in litigious times and both the presenting organization (school) and us could find liability issues if something untoward were to happen to a young kid on our watch.
people hire me to dj because i get all the girl wanna grind...I don't wana judge, but I think for high schools and college, the DJ must be around the same age as the guests...I live in LA, when I see 30 y/o DJ's for a sweet sixteen, it usually is pretty lame...you MUST be doing something right, or just sticking to top 40's and not goin in to that underground stuff
@dorank SO SO SO Not true. Every event needs a DJ that understands the event. Age means nothing.
Sometimes when you are older OR younger than your crowd, you need to REALLY bring it, but so many DJs out there can do just that... which is what makes them a great DJ :)
Here's where experience counts versus mere mixing skills. (23+ yrs here)
A true professional counts prudence and judgment amongst his "tools." These are necessary often to assure a positive experience is had by all, our reputation remains positive (I have references from National High School Organizations due to my handling of the "grind" issue.) The organizers and parent chaperons appreciate my help and I do it in such a way that the kids "get it" without being a lame about it.
My brother and I just DJed a middle school dance last Friday. About halfway through the dance, the school's Vice Principal turned on the lights, walked up on stage, grabbed our mic, and angrily told the kids that the lights will be kept on until they stop dancing "inappropriately." I don't really like doing schools because the kids request songs that the administration told us not to play beforehand. I learned to please the administration, not the students.
I am a high school student, and i agree that grinding is ridiculous. It's not dancing! It drives me crazy, it's just like people and drugs this day in age, theres no point.
i only get that with middle school high schools no problem but then again in a middle school u play a slow song every 3 other songs to keep them away from grinding
wow brian that looked amazing! GREAT IDEA! my school lets us 'booty dance' and when i starded to dj it, it was no problem for me. i agree with you on the subject.
Lights look great against the curtain like that ... I like doing the school dances, as for the grinding I do not stop the music, the only time I will stop music is if the kids are slam dancing. I will stop the music and get on the mic and ask them to stop and usually just say we just don't want anyone to get hurt tonight so no slam dancing. Usually I have to do it once and it stops, the teachers usually thank me afterwards since they are out numbered. So yes they count on us as well to watch.
One of the great aspects of Germany is that the music is hardly ever censored. You will quite often hear expletives on German radio during the day. Call it artistic interpretation if you wish. However If it was explicitly requested for me not to play certain music then I would make sure those wishes were adhered to but it would not be my responsibility to keep tabs on how my public expressed themselves rhythmically.
i do agree, But, if we are not suporting the schools rules, then we no long have jobs, they will not have dances and we are djing one less dance. So I agree we are not the chaperones, but if we can help in there rules, then we are keeping a job. just a thought
its a hard one for sure, but you could make a anoucement before hand, but do it in a tactful way where no one feels out of place or irratated. while music playing, just like saying no one under 21 is allowd to drink at a party type speach. There dance is a privilege. and as any kid they do needd to reminded of that.
Couple of things. I agree with you. We're the DJs, not the chaperones. Sure we'll do our part re: inappropriate music.
I'm curious about what you had there for sound. I'm thinking of bidding on school dances, but I'm not sure if my gear would be good enough for a School Gym. I have a pair of JBL EON 515s,(450w RMS 900W Peak) and a pair of JBL EON 518s Subs. (500w RMS 1000w Peak) Enough sound for an average sized school gym?
T I A
I loved your sighting setup BTW. Looked really sharp.
WOW...Love the lights.. I agree it's not our place to say how people should dance. We are just hired hands payed to do a job, if they want more eyes on the kids they need to have more parents there. I have my hands full protecting my equipment.
As a DJ, it shouldn't matter as to how they dance, as it's not really of your concern. Unless they are humping your DJ booth, making the gear risk damages. :)
Awesome gig log man, I agree with you 100% on the whole grinding thing us Dj's are not there baby sitters and shouldn't really try to tell them what to do its up to the staff.
Very cool lighting at that gig Brian! Our high school dance was actually last night and I had tons fun. It's kinda funny, now that I DJ I could tell our DJ wasn't reading the crowd very well, wasn't playing songs at the right time, didn't have the speakers above the crowd so you could hear the treble, etc. Grinding is common at our dances but not that bad, just friends having fun. Btw, i'm from Milwaukee as well :)
Nice video Brian, As a HS student myself i think that grinding is part of the dance, and kids actaully ask me to play "Grinding songs" As far as what is allowed an not in Utah, As long as all clothes stay on and hands stay out side of the clothes of the other person, it's all good.
Great show Brian, i liked the ideas you did with the lighting, very neat and new! I agree with you feeling on the dancing, its not our place to tell them what they can and can't do, we play the right music and its the school's job to enforce anything else if they wish.
@briansredd lol here its 18 but were 14 and i mean like a nightclub liek really a nightclub i did my school dance and i got poles for dancing and our dances are like concerts massive lights everywhere around the roof and stuff so yea lol but we still drink anyway when the teachers arnt looking :D
The school bears the responsibility of the kids. They hire you to DJ, they can hire security to enforce their rules. Are we to make sure the kids are not drinking and doing drugs? Just include in your contract that you are not liable for students actions.
I think the week of Mobile Beat finally caught up with me and am thankful that this weekend I didn't have any gigs...which allowed me to rest get back to a some what normal sleep schedule...and begin to edit/compile videos and pictures for youtube & facebook.
I think you covered this before, but people can grind to any kind of music...even without music they can grind on each other...the song isn't going to change that one bit.
I do something similar with my up lighting on the curtains. I use some Chavet Color Wash effects and if I set them on stand alone, I set them to change slowly.
Grinding and all that stuff. I only enforce it if I am asked to by the staff at any school. I am up in the air about it like you are.
I agree with you also, i myself speaking as a teenager, some teens can get out of control and its pretty nasty, what a sad way to dance, Kids nowadays have ruined dancing, but hey kids are kids.
The schools in my area have this new thing where they all where wrist bands and when caught grinding they get the rist bad taken off then on the second time the get caught they are kicked out. My opinion on the whole issue is that high school teens dance that way and it is kinda rude to us that they are getting kicked out because they like the songs we are playing and the way we are mixing.
Awsome, that looked like it would be fun to be at. The lights were wicked, As far as grinding, its not our job as DJ's to tell people not to do it. I DJ'd a party on Friday and people were grinding, it doesn't bother me, It is something that should be taken between the school and its staff or the host of a party and its occupants, the DJ should not be involved.
What speakers were you using, those things were powerful to fill a large area like that on their own. Great gig log!
Hey brian question for you, It seemed like it was very large gym type room. What size speakers where you using, I was just wondering how the fill was with your speakers.
Just as the Electric Slide and the Cupid Shuffle.. it's an instant crowd pleaser. When you have a crowd not into dancing, you throw one of these line dances on.. you instantly have the dance floor full.
It's amazing, the difference in what pleases a crowd in different places. If I played that track where I'm from, they would walk off the floor instantly.
The line dances is generally all the dance to at a younger aged school dance. Other times, they are just standing around talking. The line dances in most cases, saves a dance if you have no one dancing. Here, Line dances are essential tracks needed to get the party started.

There are a few schools that I pass to other DJ's to do because their rules are just WAY to OUT THERE! Great gig! Good Topic!

I only have 2 schools in my area (1 primary and 1 high school) and I do both every year. we don't really have 'grinding' in my area so it not so much of an isuse but the primary school made me do a CRB check last year which I can under stand.
grinding.. at the end of the day.. its a dance moove.. dance moves come and goo. its the latest move, altho tbh here in the uk....... its not as bad.... but tbh it is only a dance move its not as ifthere doing anything inapproaite
Weather or not it's inappropriate is up in the air. It's basically dry humping. I just hate to police things. I just want everyone to enjoy themselves
Great Video Brain ,Loved the Set up and lights.About Schools dances they are getting hared to do with all the rules .I was surprise to hear you playing lady gaga song must school dances i Dj we are not allow to play any of her songs .Good Points like always.
Grinding is a type of close partner dance where two or more dancers rub their bodies (especially the genitalia) against each other in a sexually suggestive manner
I do think it's a bit bad if kids are grinding... In a nightclub it's different because everyone are adults, but kids just pick up what they see on TV etc and don't necessarily understand what they are doing.

Weather or not it's inappropriate is up in the air. It's basically dry humping. I just hate to police things. I just want everyone to enjoy themselves

Most schools that I do (not many) are cool with just about anything that's edited for content and airplay.

In the UK aslong as it's clean (radio edit) you can play anything at schools.

"Grinding"?

Grinding is a type of close partner dance where two or more dancers rub their bodies (especially the genitalia) against each other in a sexually suggestive manner

It's more of a doggie style dry hump.

Hehe. Americans are a strange people. I dont mean dryhumping. Thats good shit. :) But your ruls. Cant people decide for them selfs?

I do think it's a bit bad if kids are grinding... In a nightclub it's different because everyone are adults, but kids just pick up what they see on TV etc and don't necessarily understand what they are doing.
Good vid Brian.
