This would not be a good mountain for people that are afriad of heights. It's a wonderful experience, but you will feel very exposed on the steep rocks. It's better to start on a more moderate mountain, where there are no ropes necessary- like a good day hike to the top of a local peak. Work onto steeper pitches from there. Once you are comfortable on a rope, then consider the Matterhorn.
I'm 13 right now? Could you give me some tips about climbing. I want to climb mountains when im older to move out and get a job. Then I want to try to climb this sucker. First I need some help, i've tried climbing a rock wall, i made it more than half way up but my hands were in a difficult position.
@Ultraprimes197 Sorry for the delay in writing. If you're still interested in climbing, e-mail us at usaf7summits@gmail.com. We'd be happy to give you some tips!
Hoping to go to Pakistan next Summer and climb one of the Himalayan giants. Is it true you need a go ahead to climb K2??? Or can you just turn up and do it?
I'm not sure about the permit requirements, but I'm willing to bet you must arrange your trip well ahead of time to avoid issues with government agencies.
From a climbing standpoint, I'd certainly recommend you climb several Paki or Nepalese peaks before taking on K2. That sucker is no laughing matter.
I climbed it about 5 yrs ago. I've been climbing since I was about 5 and I'm now 22 so not vast experience but I'd recomend a good 10 years. Depends mainly what route you take. Can be done in about 4-5 hours on the Lion route which is relativley easy really. If you've climbed Mount Blanc then the basic routes of the Matterhorn shouldn't be much more difficult than what you've already done.
i thought the normal route on mont blanc was much easier than the matterhorn, although there are so many different routes that maybe you climbed a more challenging one...anyways, its also a totally different style of climbing from the matterhorn. if you get some basic rock climbing experience, you will definitely be good to go with a guide...on your own its a different story because the route finding is VERY difficult...requires a much higher level of skill.
I have only ever climbed mt blanc by the regular route. can someone tell me how much experience I need to attempt the matterhorn? (great vid by the way)
you need rock climbing experience in boots and with crampons and you need to be in outstanding physical condition. if you can climb 5.7-5.8 really easily in rock shoes, you have all the technical skill you need since most of the matterhorn is not difficult climbing...just super long, always steep, and always exposed/dangerous. you have to be able to move fast and surely over easy rock climbing, in boots and sometimes with crampons, for a long time....and also be able to downclimb the same.
actually he is climbing the hornligrat route...check the usaf 7 summits website, they have a write up of this climb. they are high up on the climb approaching the roof, or dach as the swiss call it.
how the hell do you climb down that?? i read that you are supposed to face away from the mountain when downclimbing the matterhorn, but it seems so steep...how is it possible without belaying?
You bet!! We had to sleep on the mountain that night, roped into a little ledge due to taking too much time on the descent (we were being very cautious b/c of the snow and ice), but all in all it was one of the best adventures of my life!
People should climb this mountain from the very bottom not just the peak
