I think they're showing that although his hatred is unjustified and misdirected, they come from (unknown) deeply-rooted pains & experiences from his past. He's angry, resentful, unhappy, and he attempts to rationalize it by blaming black people. I believe at the end of series they try to show that he's not a "bad person," he's just pained and mistaken. It seems that's a theme throughout the series; there's no good & evil, black & white.
