  • nice and great.... u got it right buudy

  • Thanks Greg :)

  • Very helpful video, thank you!

  • Do most pro photographers use auto and take note of recommended ISO, shutter speed, aperture and then make changes to them ? I have only just started out with my first dslr and I am in full manual literally guessing all my settings because I thought that pro photographers took one look at a place or venue and just knew in their mind what settings get the best exposure. Maybe thats just naive of me to think that, I dont know. Please tell me how most good pro photographers work it out. Thanks...

  • @SuperMangn I'll work on a video....ok?

  • @GregoryCazillo Great news, thanks.

  • Very helpful for beginner or as a refresher for an old pro. One comment, though - watch the "ums" and "alrights" - it may turn people off. My suggestion - go to Toastmasters! You will be more conscious of, and thus eliminate, those vocal pauses that can be annoying. Great stuff, otherwise.

  • me and the wifey are both learning from you :) cheers bro and thanks for passing on knowledge.

  • Brand new to photography and this was really really helpful. Thanks man.

  • greg, why did you stop making this kind of videos ? I am watching you since you were on FroKnows channel. You are way better dude, keep doing this, LR tuts, flash tuts, etc... More videos more money you can make from youtube

  • @ladduro uh, I didn't stop.

  • @gregorycazillo well, you kind of ... videos are rare, you mix firefighting and snow in nov inton this channel :) Havent seen an LR tut/tip in a while. anyway, keep up the good work as often as you can. I do have a day job, so I understand your situation

  • @ladduro I'm doing my best to post once a week, sorry if that isn't enough for you. I need to make a living like everyone else and prefer to put out quality vs a bunch of crap.

  • @gregorycazillo cough: jared :cough

  • Great video Greg. Definitely helped me understand exposure better. Thanks!

  • HOw do I set my shutter speed to 1/60th of a second on my Nikon D90?

  • @AF0093 RTFM.

  • @gregorycazillo i love this response.

  • good video. useful stuff

  • Good teaching skills, but I just don't get it! I really hope I understand it once in Photography school this month. Maybe the hands on will help me to fully understand. Thanks so much for these great videos! You should be on Tv!

    Hugs,

    Zoe

  • @AF0093 What don't you understand?

  • @gregorycazillo Just how the 3 work together, so depending on the situation you should always adjust the 3? I have the Canon Rebel T3 an introductory dslr camera which has most of the functions necessary to learn and use an dslr. I'm just afraid I will not get this photography and trust me I love taking photos since I was a young girl. Now that I'm serious about photography it scares me everything there is to know and learn. Thanks for the help great videos!

  • @AF0093 I adjust my aperture first because most of the time it affects the image the most with depth of field. Next is my shutter speed, keeping it higher than 1/60th to get rid of camera shake. Lastly is the ISO, adjust it to make sure you have a good exposure and check to histogram to confirm.

  • I spot an animal or do I just constantly change the settings to fit the light ? Also , I have a bit of a problem with over and under exposure . Lets say there is an animal in a dark forest and I can expose the animal , ground , and near trees properly but there are really bright streaks of light coming through the trees . If I have the perfect exposure for the animal and near it but the bright light streaks are way overexposed , what can I do ? Thank you very much and , again , great teacher .

  • First of all , great job . I am thorougly surprised that you are such a great teacher . I have one question , I do a lot of wildlife photography and that means driving on roads looking for wildlife and the light is constantly changing . This is because , generally , I am out from about an hour before light to about 2-4 hours after and the light is constantly changing and also because there are bright meadows and dark forests changing quickly . Do I set settings before I leave and change for when

  • @ProtocolSnowMD that's really silly, they're not kids.

  • Great video Greg! Very informative. I hope you make more video.

  • What's with the hair?

  • Wow, thanks greg for the f-stop explanation. You made a lot of things clearer to me now!

  • GREAT Video, Thanks a lot, I will be watching it over and over 'til I see it in my sleep. lol. Thanks.

  • back then.... photography is rich boys exclusive..... film, develop, film, develop, film, develop.... = money......

  • hey greg quick question. my hands shake alot, or at least i think they do, how do i get myself to get steadier. any tips at all?

  • @hahatrainwr3ck make sure to hold the camera correctly, left hand UNDER the lens so your left thumb is pointing to the left and tuck your elbows in to your body.

  • Greg...WOW, no one has explained this stuff this well ever. if you wrote a book I'd buy it.

  • great!! :) keep them coming :)

  • I love your simplicity! :) No "catchy extended and weird" phrases...

  • Another way is to change 2 of the sittings and use the exposure meter to set the third correctly.

  • please teach us how to use histogram and to understand it.

  • how could someone dislike this video?

  • Great video Greg! Nice and informative, keep em' coming!

  • Great video, Greg. We want more!

  • YAY, your back!! in this way, i don't regret the break-up as much. both of you guy's are making good video's and i can learn from you both. let the more advanced videos follow!

  • AWESOME.

  • Google "SLR camera-simulator", or "camera-simulator". there is tow different simulators help you understand more in practice .

  • Another question for you Greg. What is the best external hard drive I can get for about $200 dollars. I want at least a 2 TB drive. I will want two of them, one that is always connected to PC and another that is a backup for the 1st ext. HD that is only connected temporally to get new files and re-disconnected in case of a lightning strike or something (which surge protectors cannot stop, been there done that) Thanks.

  • Great video Greg

What is one f stop lower than 2.8?

  • @alfadhli007 1 stop below f/2.8 is f/2.0...and another stop lower is f/1.4

  • @Wuzzysbrand06 Thanks

  • Excellent tutorial....these are the kind of video's that we want!

  • This is such a fantastic explanation! I wish I would have had this last year before going through tons of articles, forums, books, trial and error (well, those all worked well enough, but this would have been super helpful to start off with).

Keep the videos coming, Greg! I know we all really appreciate it.

  • Very nice video Greg!

  • Great Video, but lose the intro/outro

  • I never understood what these numbers really meant until now! I had a basic idea of how it worked, but you explained it so well and made it seem so simple. Thank you so much!

  • great vid and explanation, thanks!

  • Comment removed

  • hey Greg what kind of backdrop stand is that? looks heavy duty! i want!!

  • A very nice explanation.

  • I'M STILL SO CONFUSED!

  • Great stuff Greg! Videos like this teach good photography skills, something that I like to watch as an amateur photographer.

I've been experimenting with my D7000 with using AF-ON instead of half pressing the shutter, any pro tips or experience you have had with this?

  • @blackholesun211 You mean the AF ON button? Its just personal preference. I prefer to have my thumb on the joystick so I can change focus points more rapidly.

  • @gregorycazillo I've changed the AE-AF lock on my D7000 to act as an AF-ON button. I still move my focus points around, but when shooting action, the AF-ON makes for nice focus tracking instead of accidently pressing the shutter button early. I don't use the AE Lock button very much so the decision was kinda easy.

  • Hey Greg, I have a question about storing my RAW images. Do storing them in a compressed zipped folder instead of a regular folder hurt them in any way? losses in data, etc? I dont need to store them in a zipped file but if it saves me more space (without removing data or anything from the RAW files of course) I will do so by storing them in a zipped file instead. So... TOO ZIP OR NOT TO ZIP, lol. Please let me know what you think, Thanks, Tom.

  • @BigCatsWildlife I'd never compress my raw files or store them on a compressed drive. That would only complicate things in case of catastrophic failure and slow down your workflow.

  • @gregorycazillo I thought something like that would happen, Thank you very much for your feed back, Thanks.

  • Very good and clear explanation of Stops!

    Awesome video!

    Thanks!

  • posting some pictures will be more helpful

  • Too many basic vids exist already, I wouldn't mind seeing more advanced info. Maybe how is DOF calculated?

  • Great video, very helpful

  • yo greg, your probably hate people asking this, what's the divide between you and jared? i missed all the videos i guess or i just never noticed. someone fill me in?

  • You people need to stop crying about Jared and Greg...grow up and enjoy them both...

  • yo man you are way better photographer than Jared to be honest. I have no idea why he cut you. But checking the comments on the previous jared videos with you in it, many people comment you are better than Jared. So that's why he cut you, he is probably jealous of you

  • Hey Greg.

I would just like to point out one thing which I think would make your tutorials better... If you smile a bit more and put some emotion and play into your videos. I don't mean exactly like Jared, but it is a bit nicer to watch and more entertaining if you are putting a couple jokes in, or smiling a bit more.

I'm not hating on you, I just think in my opinion that would make the tutorials a bit better.

I wish you all the best of luck with your brand though,

    Bye for now :)

  • Awesome video. Much more in depth than Jared's videos.

  • Great job Greg, I learned alot. I think you're gonna be better off doing your own thing. That way you aren't limited on what you want to do and how you want to do it. Looking forward to more videos. Take care.

    MandyPatty

  • Kind of interesting that Jared posted an aperture tutorial video a day after you put this up... almost seems like a war declaration

  • @ProtocolSnowMD …or they think alike? makes sense for Greg's "first" video because its important to cover and it makes sense that Jared covered it because he hasn't really gone over it that much before...

  • Hi Greg.. love it! I wonder if this is the " rant " you mentioned to me about?

GREAT video and easy to follow :)

  • Really wish you and the Fro would make up and be friends again... dynamics off you too where amazing

  • Kapow ! off to a great start Father Greg,

...Thou shalt never use auto mode

    ...Thou shalt subscribe to Cazillo

...Blessed are those who shoot at 2.8

...Thou shalt avoid shooting handheld lower than 1/60th

...Thou shalt not worship ...you know who...!

  • THANK YOU GREG! :)

  • Kapow ! off to a great start Father Greg,

...Thou shalt never use auto mode

    ...Thou shalt subscribe to Cazillo

...Blessed are those who shoot at 2.8

...Thou shalt avoid shooting handheld lower than 1/60th

...Thou shalt not worship ...you know hwo... well not so much as before anyway !

  • Great video Greg, well done mate, back on the horse and giving us quality videos!

  • wish my teacher explained stuff this well! love the vids man!

  • Great start Greg! Keep 'em coming. I'll be sure to point any new shooters to this video.

  • Literally refreshing vid, excellent!!! Thanx

  • Killer first video, Greg.. 'subbed to the channel, and your website is bookmarked.

Like it's been mentioned - even though I personally understand the exposure triangle, the information here is golden for anyone starting out or, been stuck in auto. That other guy never went into the exposure triangle in such a clear way, and never seemed to talk about keeping ISO as low as possible.... He just pimped the fact he could shoot in 10,000 ISO with his $5k camera, and kinda left it at that. Great Job!

  • Greg,

I will be a better photographer watching your videos and I want to thank you in advance.

  • Gread video Greg, thanks! Can you explain how a flash works when in manual? Is it supposed to work w/the camera to tell you correct exposure with the flash?

  • @PhlipOutPhoto its complicated! Not sure I can do it justice in a short comment. I'll definitely be doing a video on it.

  • This video is going to explode!

  • @bratvlad Let's hope so! Greg seems like a really cool dude who got the shaft for a ton of HARD work. I hope the thing goes absolutely viral!

  • who in their right mind would dislike this video? D=

  • @05chapman05 you?

  • Comment removed

  • @lenoat702 And what were you trying to accomplish by replying to my comment?

  • @05chapman05 Nothing

  • Greg is the man

  • the 2 dislikes are from Jared and Dom (who jared forced)

  • wow! nice video! go greg! :D

  • Great Job Greg!!!

  • Thanks Greg, love your work!

Hope you can do some more on archiving and storage in lightroom, Bluray apposed to hard drive, and where is the best place for off-site storage servers?

Also, more than happy, and I bet so are 449 others, to buy a T-shirt or what ever to kick things along.

    Cheers, Brisbane, Australia.

  • Wow! Awesome video Greg! Hope you stick with it! Maybe in the future you'd consider about going in depth on aperture such as how distance from the subject affects the focal range.

  • GO GREG!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • nice.

  • Thanks for this Greg, keep it up!

  • greg please post atleat 2 episode in a week ! please!

  • Thanks Greg. You're the man, man!

  • THIS is Greg Cazillo. If he has to do something he starts from the beginning. Scientific an precise.

  • Excellent video Greg, really appreciate your time. I have learnt a great deal from the videos that you and jared have produced. Ok so ISO 200 was missing from this one but everyone gets the idea. Hope you are able to keep up the good work.

  • ISOoops? :-D

  • Great job Greg! I look forward to more of your videos!

  • This is really great Greg, keep it up!

  • great job Greg.

  • i notice your mic pops/crackles a lot, you should do something about it. reminds me a bit of those bad microphones public access channel people use for parades and other events. great video btw. i think the lecture first then practicality next, format will work nicely. id love to see a "how to meter" video after this exposure stuff :) as they are strongly related

  • Thanks Greg, really well explained.

  • Great video. Thanks so much!

  • I already know all of this, but always good to get a refresher (: Congrats greg for getting a great start!

  • You should tell what "the same exposure" means. The image will look the same in lightness. Thats how I learned it i remember. One more thing. Stop telling about your 3ds in a basic theory video. I told these to help thats my opinion

Great video by the way looking for more!!

  • I'm gonna show this video to my friend who is just getting into DSLR photography. You explain everything very clearly.

  • This is such a promising start to the Cazillo world! loved it greg! keep it up

  • Makes sense to me Greg thanks :0)

  • This video is perfect. Lesson well done! Looking forward to more vids.

  • Great lesson Greg, really well done. I'm looking forward to more.

  • Awesome video loved it.

  • thanks gregster ! now roll out the t-shirts buddy

  • exellent vid greg keep it up i will be staying tuned

  • Great job. Although I already am familiar with manual exposure, I like how you did the calculations (+4 stops of light when you when from f/11 to f/2.8, etc.). Probably the best explanation of manual exposure I've watched, I'll recommend this to some of my friends stuck in program mode.

  • That was awesome!!!!!!!!!!! You rocked it Greg.

  • very gd jared never taught beginners this

  • lol even thoguh i know all this perfectly i still learned that after changing aperature i need to change iso first not shutter and then iso and then again lower shutterspeed like i just did today.lol

  • Great start Greg! Really enjoyed this video! Can't wait for more!!

  • Quality Greg quality, nice to see you rocking and rolling, well done Buddy..

  • lol at my comment on lil´s last jp video promoting THIS video and getting mysteriously deleted.

  • Greg = All around Photography Master.

    Jared = Freelance Spirit Coach.

    How's that for "CONTRAST"?

  • Nice one Greg but I noticed that ISO 200 was missing too. It would be nice to see the practical side too. Maybe a model in front of camera, change the settings as discussed, then show the altered images. Nice of Greg!

  • A great education on the fundamentals Greg, I am sure many a photographer will really appreciate this.

    Thanks

    Zeno

  • Good video, to bad about the ISO bug tho but only your '1st' movie on your own. Hope you will do some more advanced videos in the future tho.

  • Jared and Lil clicked the thumbs down buttons.

  • @LastPatriotStanding Wonder if Mandy Patty moved to this site... probably :P

  • thank you :)

  • You forgot the 200 ISO. It's 100, 200,400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400 and so on.

  • Awesome! Greg's the man. Can't wait for more.

  • this video felt like i was back school but i wasn't bored out of my mind

and it's good to see you making videos again

  • Good job

  • great video with full of information :) keep'em coming! :)

  • Good to see you back!

  • The to dislikes are Jared and Lil.. just kidding.

Suberb video! Love the whiteboard. But I think it would be more accurate if the ISO 100 was changed to 200.

  • @johanneswingerlang Why should the ISO say 200?

  • @iamravenous ISO 100 -> ISO 200 -> ISO 400 -> ISO 800

    1/100th ISO 400

    1/50th ISO 200

    1/25th ISO 100

  • Very cool. Thanks Greg! :)

  • Thanks for sharing!

  • soooo good dude, i was expecting this, and you finally did it! in this new start im sure everybody will sopport you 100%. dont forget those playlists on your channel, is very important so we dont get lost with the content.

  • Nice video. Finally figured out one thing I've been doing wrong. Just wish it wasn't so confusing in the camera. I can remember whole stops but it gets weird when I'm doing 1/2 and 1/3 stops since ISO doesn't work this way for me. Time to get crackin on a new cheat sheet! Thanks Greg.

  • YES! this is such a useful video - this video is solving a lot of problems for me - just keep these coming

    awesome

  • nice vids greg keep them coming

  • Maybe I'm crazy, but is ISO 200 missing from the example? either way, I learned a lot and I have not found things this well explained on Youtube so far! We all don't want to rush you to make vids, just as they'e convenient, cuz quality is far more important than quantity :) Loyal Subscriber :)

  • That helped me so much about the stops. Thanks.

  • High quality tutorial. Its obvious you thought it all out before presenting it.

  • AWESOME video Greg. i felt like i was back in my Intro Photography Class...thanks man!

  • Really helpful video, Greg. Even for those who may be familiar with exposures, there may be things we learn that we didn't know before. My only question is, your ISO graph goes 100-400-800. Shouldn't the progression be 100-200-400-800?

  • Great to see you back Greg. This is one of the most important tutorials you need to learn. If you need to watch it over and over again then do it, then get out and practice.

    theoldnikonian

  • Man, you said you will create high quality videos, and so you did :)

maybe you can think about adding some examples in your videos for the various settings, what does what thing do to a background, critical shutter speeds, common aperture etc. Anyway, very very good vid, keep up the good work!

  • @dakipro Will do - This is the lecture, practical is next!

  • @gregorycazillo Great, perhaps you can announce (advertise) it on the video with annotations or something, so people can look forward to it and know there is more to come on the subject, in case they missed some part :)

  • @gregorycazillo thanks for the useful video...

if you can include some example photos during the lecture it might be easy to understand the context...
