That depends. If u have naturally stronger legs, squat phase and jerk itself is not usualy the problem, problem use to be high pull phase. If u have stronger back, high pull phase is done with ease and ull strugle with squat and jerk. Plus, if u have stronger legs, ur dominant discipline is usualy CJ. if u have stronger back, ure better snatcher.
I say that this is stupid, not the technique, but because most can clean far more than they can jerk. Therefore, the C&J is limited mostly to jerk, and not a lack of cleaning ability.
@BeepimajeepBeep gotta work on your squats, that's not balanced.... normally you should be able to power clean and much as you bench press..... but you can squat a lot more.....
What it does it's limiting her pulling performance. Period. It's like deadlift with snatch grip. Other than personal preference it doesn't make any sense.
I don't know why this is labelled as a "new" technique. I've seen lifters do this for years. Heck, one of the female lifters I coach did this the very first time she ever cleaned, and she continues to do it. She has long limbs, and just compensated for it automatically with a wide grip on the pull, and then shoots her hands in on the catch. I think you'll find that many lifters do this without even being instructed to do so.
@B2theYBroWny I'm guessing because these athletes train very hard they will have very strong pulls.
An example of an elite 77kg class chinese lifter I know of:
His C&J is 202kg, snatch 160-170kg
But his Back squat/Front squat are 290/260
Clean Pull=280kg
Snatch Pull=240kg
With a snatch pull as high as that they will have no problem lifting the weight up, and because the grip is wider the bar will end up much higher when the lifter has extended and that will allow them to get under much easier?
@SonOfNye from a bio-mechanical point of view, it doesn't. she's not able to get as much leg drive from the lift. also the switching grip isn't a great idea. she messes that up she's going to be unbalanced and make the lift A LOT harder.
But hey. If this is how she feels comfortable pulling more power to her. i'm not going to argue. besides she's probably way more experienced than me. probably pulling like this for a reason.
wow this is depressing lol.. a 63 KG girl can almost clean as much as I back squat.. i legit only have 22 KG on her.. fuckkkk hahaha not to mention only have 60 KG on my deadlift haha.. her and Trent Richardson make anybody who lifts feel like a piece of shit hahah
has anyone ever tried the opposite with a narrow grip and wider stance, this it would allow ur back angle to be more vertical and u could just slide uner the weight quickly and since ur stance is already shoulder width apart u could quickly catch the clean and then squat it up!! just curious and by wide stance i mean shoulder width or a little wider not like an all out sumo pull
@166TheTruth Since she is doing the snatch-grip clean her hands start out wider which means the bar is already higher off the ground compared to a regular clean. Basically it lets her get the bar up higher so she can drop under it faster to catch it.
This is pretty amazing. It's basically her snatch grip, but I don't know if this is just a function of her anthropometry so who knows if shortening the second pull like that works with other athletes. Very strong anyways.
This 16 year old girl just lifted as much as me and I outweigh her by 30 kilos. This video made me feel like crap so I went directly to the gym and tried it. Very unsuccessful for me at heavy weights.
Excited to see if this is a useful technique. If her hands are sliding grip during the 3rd pull she must not actually be able to "pull" under the bar. Is having the bar one or two inches higher in the second pull worth not being able to do an active third pull???
Amazing! For skilled athlete this may work. For the average lifter, it's just another thing to think about and get wrong. More power to her. She obviously has the complexities under control.
Anyone who knows anything about olympic lifting will tell you if someone ends up catching on their toes then the lifter has shagged the bar and its ended up away from their CoM (BAD). And the clean might be a loaded jump but that doesnt mean that when a 63kg women is lifting 125kg that she is going to leave the ground, its just the intention, and her heals leave the ground so there is definately triple extension!! And lets be honest her coaches will know a darn sight more than us
i can see why she isn't able to get under the bar doing a proper clean, watch her feet....she isn't getting a full extention of the body befor she goes to catch. almost the same with her snatch she could improve by 5kg at least if she got the full extention and right up on her tipytoes*
oh shit, this actually makes sense.. placing the grip wider makes the bar go up higher.. that's why short arm people can olympic lift much more than those with longer arms
Could be the snatch is her better lift so they adjust her c&j technique to be more like the snatch initially. Maybe it's a psychological tactic or perhaps the wider grip engages the lats more? I suppose it warrants some experimentation.
@Vectorcomputer Im pretty sure its just for extra height (you can see the bar crash from too much of it). Though you would have to have an extra strong posterior chain to clean a barbell with that wide a grip
@needabloodyname maybe you are just completely ignorant and that naive. USAW is the purest form of lifting, drug free, due to the consistent testing and regulations. other countries mostly eastern European and china OPENLY admit to the use of steroids. They come at Olympic lifts with the mentality of "why would you NOT use steroids"? Countries like China breed identical twins in the unethical manner of having them both lift for the national team one on steroids and the other clean.
@Bigkahunahockey ah...the good ole' steroid argument...don't we always talk about the guilty until proven statement in america? lol who would OPENLY ADMIT to using steroids (even if they are using them) since IWF obviously has a very strict steroid ban policy? if using steroids would add 30 kg or more to ur total then why not all the american lifters do that and get "even" with their competitors. these excuses are just too lame to comprehend, u might as well as stick to football and nachos.
@needabloodyname So maybe before you talk shit you should look into the statement. Obviously having a picture of Arnold as your profile picture shows you still lift in a barbaric style and have no ethical standards with the use of steroids. btw I do get off my fat ass and Olympic lift.
@Bigkahunahockey it's a known fact that the only people who bitch about steroids on the internet are jealous pencil neck weaklings. Stop being a hater and start training dude.
that's weird that's how I always do it, and I only do oly lifts for my workout, i never was coached. as the weight got heavier, I started doing the same move. works for me
@freedomsoldier187 The first pull is not the limiting factor in the lift. So the reason people can clean more than they can snatch has nothing to do with the grip, it has to do with the fact that the clean is a much shorter range of motion for the bar to travel than the snatch, therefore you can move more weight though it. The wide grip also alters the height of the bar at the start of the 2nd pull and could shorten the pulling distance on the clean for someone who masters that technique.
@forestofwolvesgym yeah ok, well you stick to all the theorys you want, when you can snatch pull more then you clean pull you go take the world by storm and break some records.
@freedomsoldier187 No one cares how much you can clean pull, they care how much you can clean. In the full classic lifts the first pull is not the limiting factor, so switching to a weaker leverage grip for the first pull doesn't affect the lift off the floor, but it can have an effect on the 2nd pull.
She might get the bar a bit higher with the wide grip. Just grab on to a bar and stand up staight and note how much higher up on the thigh the bar will be when you use a wide grip. She also might be able to be a bit faster on the turnover.
According to the video, she weighs 63g. That means she was doing those C&Js with twice her bodyweight. Needless to say, I don't want her to punch me in the mouth anytime soon.
She's lifting a tremendous amount of weight for her size and weight, so obviously its working for her. However, I don't know how intelligent it is to actually let go of the bar in the middle of your pull.
but this is not good to use wide grip firstly for clean and jerk bcoz weights are much heavier than the snatch weight, hard to lift to max weights, maybe that is her preference.
Looks like three separate grips! Wide for the pulls, narrow for the catch and medium for the jerk. Not to mention the sickening display of explosive power!

When you watch most Oly lifters, the clean is normally not the problem. it's executing the jerk
