This is definitely one of my favorite books by King. Yes, most of King's books have a reoccuring theme, but this is because nearly ALL his books and short stories are linked. The painting is a symbol for how Rosie figures out to become a strong woman on her own, and I certainly didn't find it confusing. However, perhaps it's a good idea to start off with a less confusing King book to be able to slowly catch on to how all his books tie in. And for serious King fans, The Dark Tower, for sure.
This book was beyond weird, even for Stephen KIng and that is saying something ! (haha).
Really though,I LOVE SK and all his books, namely Bag of Bones and Storm of the Century--if you haven't read those, you should, not gorey or gruseome, just a bit creepy--and am able to read fast and remember 100% of what I read, but this book actually took me twice as long to rea.Don't get me wrong,it's a good book but the picture thing was a little much for me.
This book was confusing. I agree with you when you say he should have kept to the Husband and wife aspect and steered clear of that ultra confusing painting aspect!
great book, absaloutly thrilling, scary, somwhat disturbing, diddnt quite understand what the painting bits were all about but fuck me what a good read, BRAVO!!
You're totally right !! I don't like this book of Stephen book either but he has indeed many good books. Try Misery, it's one of his only books without a supernatural thing in it. It's very realistic.
I couldn't get through it. I bought it, and started to read it, it was NICE. But when she entered into the picture I thought: "That's stupid" and then I couldn't read the rest of it.
in my opinion Rose Madder is the greatest book by Stephen King.
And wtf, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon sucked balls :p I love Stephen King, and that book has been the only book I've ever read by him, that i did not like. haha xD
you didnt like it just because you are a girl!! thats why. you should have been rosie. NORMAN RULES!!!! FIRST GRADE DETECTIVE INSPECTOR NORMAN DANIELS!!!........HE WANTS TO TALK TO YOU.....UP CLOSE!!!!!!!!!!
But that's my opinion, and btw im reading rose madder and Im up to the bit where Norman (Husband) is outside her apartment, and she told her boyfriend not to come to the apartment ^^ so far so good, hopefully you will recognize the bit lol
well, I really like this book. read it last year. one of my first bigger stephen king books... liked "the dark half" and "cujo", too... "rose madder" (german title: "Das Bild" = "The Picture") I would say is a 7/10. nice review by the way
...but for me, when life went into the painting, it just went a bit too far fetched for me. Part of me would much prefer if King had kept it real without the use of supernatural. None the less, it was an enjoyable read, and your review is quite fitting. Please review some more King novels. I have read quite a bit (Hearts in Atlantis, Dolores Claiborne, Carrie, The Girl who loved Tom Gordon, The Tommy Knockers...and The Dead Zone) but I would love to hear more of your views...Thanks!
I agree. That's one thing I sometimes don't like about King's books is his views about the supernatural, or what he thinks will come off as real. I don't think "Rose Madder" worked quite as well at being "real" as some of his other books. It was just too far out there. Other books I would recommend would be "IT" and "The Eyes of the Dragon". If you really like his work I'd consider these some of the best. :D
Hey, I just finished Rose Madder last night, and I enjoyed it, I must say. Your review is quite good also. For me, I liked the parts that were "real" as opposed to the life beyond the painting. It didn't quite confuse me as such, but at times I think his take on fantasy was a little dull and slowed the pace of the book. The parts where Norman was tracking Rosie down was very exciting - those parts were real page turning moments. And there was very good symbolism in there also: the foxes etc
Insomnia, another King book, is about an abusing husband who's against pro-choice and goes berserk planning a Kamikaze attack on thousands of people in a stadium. That is very close to being ridiculous in my eyes. I had to skip many boring pages to get to that crazy climax. And then I had enough of King's tedious style of writing and the supernatural.
I prefer to stick to serious literature.
PS. Good video, and the way you speak is very cute.
Huh... I'll have to check "Insomnia" out. He does write quite a bit of filler stuff, but most of it is usually character depth. He really develops his characters until you can see them as real people. If you haven't read "IT" check that out. It's not unbelievable. Yea, there are bizarre parts, but for the most part it's great. Just really long. :D
I can see you like Stephen King's books, and I have nothing against it. However, I think he writes garbage. I studied English Literature in university and he wasn't even mentioned in my courses. I only read one of his books to see what the hype was all about. I will never waste my time reading another book by this guy.
As for me I still prefer to read serious literature. And so I wouldn't recommend Insomnia to you.
Please note I am not being an a**hole. I just disagree with you.
Good review :) But I've read Rose Madder, and I really liked the book, also the fact that it had two main themes. The whole book caught my attention from page one. Now I've just finished reading "the dead zone", and I really enjoy that book too. Stephen King is one hell of an author :)
I agree, you should make other reviews of his books (:
He is totally my favorite author! But a lot of people think that's weird. lol. This was a good book, just a little too far gone from what he usually writes. Ever read "IT" or "Eyes of the Dragon"? I would recommend those. :D
No, I've been looking everywhere for them in the library, but they don't have those books :( But now I've just finished reading "The girl who loved Tom Gordon". Great book, but I didn't quite understand all of it.
This is a good review. I'm reading "It" now, and absolutely love it. The only book I've read of his was Salem's Lot, which I highly recommend. I have a ton more of his books to read. I'd like to see reviews of some of his other books that you've read, but you don't have to. It's only an idea. Thanks again for this review. :)
"IT" is by far my favorite book of his. I must have read it 3 or 4 times already, but it's sooooo long! I had to read "The Shining" for my senior year english class, and that was OK. As for recommendations, I would totally suggest "The Eyes of the Dragon".

As in the girl who freaked out because he killed the character in the book? I don't see the resemblence. She was nuts!
