I still cannot believe they cast such a lamer as Richard Beymer as Tony in the film, or had such a poor singer dub his vocals. Larry Kert's performance is exquisite, powerful and tender at once - electrifying.
So many memories! I did not see the 1957 original stage version of "West Side Story". I did however see the movie in 1961 in downtown Chicago at the Michael Todd Theater (owned then by Elizabeth Taylor). I was a sophomore in high school. The first row or two in the theater were girls sobbing their eyes out. (Heck I was too!) I just loved Richard Behmer (?) and Natalie Wood. This has to be one of the best if not the best American Musicals ever created.
Larry Kert was wonderful in West Side Story, but I also like the film version. I remember a song from the film "New York, New York" entitled "Happy Endings." It was cut from the movie, but Kert sang it magnificently.
En mi opinión es una de las mejores melodías de los grandes musicales de todos los tiempos. Con el paso del tiempo a esta obra le pasa como al buen vino: ¡¡MEJORA!!
Dancing Mike I absolutely agree!!!!!! I grew up listening to the original Broadway cast versions, and the original is so much more passionate and true that there is no comparison!!! Thanks!!!
Absolutely STUNNING!West Side Story supercedes evry other 'serious' musical drama,EVER! I thank you for putting a very professional video together for us all to enjoy!
i remember having this tape as a kid. i might still have it. i conmpared the other tape from the film soundtrack and i found several differences. brilliant. both
@cutiepie6561 Carol Lawrence originated the role on Broadway opposite Larry Kert. Natalie Wood played Maria in the film, even though Wood was of Russian, not Latino descent. Both Wood and Richard Beymer, who played Tony in the film, had their singing voices dubbed, Wood by the famous Marni Nixon, who also dubbed for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady (among others).
This is the version I know best - I like it better than the movie version. I always like the way they used a moving lyric instead of the sustained bflat that so many tenors use. But that said, I love this version and the movie regardless.
In all the years I've only heard one sing it with the emotion it deserves and he brought down the house. I wish I could find it
Google "The Capeman Murders" by George Spiegler to read up on the real life story that in a playground only 4 blocks from the Majestic Theater on Bway an hour after the curtain fell in Aug of 1959.
The play /film awesome, real life story is far more compelling. Life imitating art, the most famous crime of the 50's

Why is this version in a different key than the film version? It annoys me when I hear a song in a different key from what I'm used to, I can't even really enjoy the song.
I first heard this song was when my dad purchased a turntable in 1967 and long with it came a disk of West side Story. I still treasure the disk... dad passed away a couple of months ago... this song was one of his favourites... brings back memories...
I also love this and my middle name is Maria, though sometimes I get called Maria, it does have a lovely sound and as the song goes..its almost like praying!
Larry Kent is the one who sings this? I could have cried, beautiful song beautifully sung!
Lol after hearing this i realize how much that performance that larry kert and carol lawrence did of tonight on some old tv show sucked... this is great
Timeless. Breathtaking. This is my favourite song from any musical and Kert's performance is among the bests.
I prefer this version with the song with the high A at the climax rather than the one with the Bb because I think the "i" sound rings out better than "a".
Just great. You may know that Arthur Laurents despised the film version--both for way the songs were handled but mostly for moving them around into a different postion--especiall Office Krupke.
Perfect for ear-training! =D

Let's have a Stephen Sondheim "Love-Athon" with back2back SS for a 24 hour period.
We'll call it "One Step From Heaven - Words and Music of Stephen Sondheim". Or to be cheeky we can call it "The Sondheim Manouver". Any takers?

The movie version is in E, I believe.

I guess I should be mad at the movie, then. Once I get a key in my head, though, it doesn't sound right in any other key.
