  • Perfect for ear-training! =D

  • My name is Maria. Listening to this version brings tears to my eyes. WOW I love it. Thank you.

  • I still cannot believe they cast such a lamer as Richard Beymer as Tony in the film, or had such a poor singer dub his vocals. Larry Kert's performance is exquisite, powerful and tender at once - electrifying.

  • I think both versions are brilliant in their own ways!!

  • wow

  • Larry Kert is an amazing singer! I love him, he brings tony out with his beautiful voice!

  • My acting teacher is going to make me sing this song in my class. Nervous! I've never sang before in my life lol

  • Augmented fourth

  • American Dad brought me here.

  • So many memories! I did not see the 1957 original stage version of "West Side Story". I did however see the movie in 1961 in downtown Chicago at the Michael Todd Theater (owned then by Elizabeth Taylor). I was a sophomore in high school. The first row or two in the theater were girls sobbing their eyes out. (Heck I was too!) I just loved Richard Behmer (?) and Natalie Wood. This has to be one of the best if not the best American Musicals ever created.

  • My teacher always sings this song when he calls my name in class... it's kinda creepy :S He's like 70 year old or something...

  • @MissMimisAccount One of my teachers does the same :D

  • Larry Kert was wonderful in West Side Story, but I also like the film version. I remember a song from the film "New York, New York" entitled "Happy Endings." It was cut from the movie, but Kert sang it magnificently.

  • Let's have a Stephen Sondheim "Love-Athon" with back2back SS for a 24 hour period.

We'll call it "One Step From Heaven - Words and Music of Stephen Sondheim". Or to be cheeky we can call it "The Sondheim Manouver". Any takers?

  • Wow I passed 100,000 Views !!!! Thank you everyone who's watched and enjoyed

  • this was on fonejacker :P

  • my mom used to sing this to me when I was very little, to help me sleep.

  • Larry Kert sounds like Brent Spiner

  • I would marry whatever guy ever sang this to me but changed it to Jackie (: <3

  • @myvestigee Too bad the guy who is singing is gay /=

  • @WinterWonder99 man are you serious?! SHEESH WHAT A WASTE OF MEAT

  • @myvestigee Yep Larry Kent he was gay...........he was also in the original Cabaret. He is a cutie to goood for us gays though lol.

  • i love this song!!

    west side story is AMAZING!!!!

  • glad you chose the superior original recording Mike, and not the crappy film soundtrack. But, man was Natalie Wood hot! Damn :)

  • sighs...I tear up when I hear this, it brings some good memories back to me<3 really touching memories ;)

  • Isn't this Larry Kert? It's not Richard Beymer. And if so it's the wrong video.

  • I JUSt saw westside story....you can never beat the original cast....

  • Wow I'm nearly 100,000. Thanks everyone whose enjoyed :D

  • En mi opinión es una de las mejores melodías de los grandes musicales de todos los tiempos. Con el paso del tiempo a esta obra le pasa como al buen vino: ¡¡MEJORA!!

  • Dancing Mike I absolutely agree!!!!!! I grew up listening to the original Broadway cast versions, and the original is so much more passionate and true that there is no comparison!!! Thanks!!!

  • I'd sing like this for Natalie Wood too.

  • Even as a kid hearing this song I knew back then it was magic.....still is....

  • i remember listening to this song without knowing what it was on an airplane. Hearing this beautiful song once again is a pure joy. :)

  • Absolutely STUNNING!West Side Story supercedes evry other 'serious' musical drama,EVER! I thank you for putting a very professional video together for us all to enjoy!

  • i remember having this tape as a kid. i might still have it. i conmpared the other tape from the film soundtrack and i found several differences. brilliant. both

  • I always wonderes that some boy is singing tnis aria for me.

    My name is Maria.

From the first time I saw it on Kaunas Musical Theatre than I was 5 or 6 year old.

    It's allways good to remember.

  • This isnt better than the film version but at least he tryed. He's not as good as Jim Bryant.

  • @RADIOWebcast I agree...but this is the original version from the Broadway play

  • @RADIOWebcast Who is Jim Bryant?

  • @nicodagger The absolutely wonderful singing voice of Tony in the Film Version of 'West Side Story'.

  • Wonderful sound

    Shamantha from Holland

  • man my drama going to make musical of west side story this one...

    T.T

  • love this film and the boy who sings this is hott handsome

maria is the most prettisest woman ive eva seen in an musical

  • Just breathtaking! I saw the Broadway version and also fell in love with Larry Kert's version of Something's Coming.

  • i love the picture at 1:04

  • we play this in band and personally the music for this is better with flutes, trumpets, clarinets, and mallets, than with the whole band...

  • Awesome job on the video

  • @TheCrazychick07 Thanks I'm glad you like it.

  • amazing

  • When I hear this song, I just melt.

  • WHO PLAYS MARIA

  • Natalie Wood

  • @cutiepie6561 Carol Lawrence originated the role on Broadway opposite Larry Kert. Natalie Wood played Maria in the film, even though Wood was of Russian, not Latino descent. Both Wood and Richard Beymer, who played Tony in the film, had their singing voices dubbed, Wood by the famous Marni Nixon, who also dubbed for Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady (among others).

  • This is the version I know best - I like it better than the movie version. I always like the way they used a moving lyric instead of the sustained bflat that so many tenors use. But that said, I love this version and the movie regardless.

  • In all the years I've only heard one sing it with the emotion it deserves and he brought down the house. I wish I could find it

Google "The Capeman Murders" by George Spiegler to read up on the real life story that in a playground only 4 blocks from the Majestic Theater on Bway an hour after the curtain fell in Aug of 1959.

The play /film awesome, real life story is far more compelling. Life imitating art, the most famous crime of the 50's

That's why it needs to be sung with drama

  • dude this is awesome!!just beautiful!!

  • This is the original version, in the key of E flat

The movie version is in E, I believe.

  • I guess I should be mad at the movie, then. Once I get a key in my head, though, it doesn't sound right in any other key.

  • I know the feeling.

  • Wow!!!! I've never heard this version before. LOVE IT!!!

  • did the actors sing for the movie?? or did they have other ppl sing for them?? i love this musical.

  • Well, when one is used to the film version, and if one likes the film version, then hearing it like this simply is paradise.

  • Aaaah, beautiful bright vowels in the opening! I hate when singers throw the word away by saying "MUH-ree-UH"... it's just ugly. This is so lovely!!!

  • realy nice song..touchy

  • I think this guy sings better than me. I rarely hear a singer who knows how to control feelings in songs. This guy is a true master.

  • He's the original singer. This is the recording from the first Broadway cast back in 1957.

  • @Dancing88Mike His name is Larry Kert.

  • @AlexYCChiu I watched this video: watch?v=Xv1SGjfiAx4 . Your statement is invalid.

  • I have this Version on a 2 Cd set of Broadway hits. I like this singer because you can tell how Tony really feels.

  • I first heard this song was when my dad purchased a turntable in 1967 and long with it came a disk of West side Story. I still treasure the disk... dad passed away a couple of months ago... this song was one of his favourites... brings back memories...

  • I also love this and my middle name is Maria, though sometimes I get called Maria, it does have a lovely sound and as the song goes..its almost like praying!

Larry Kent is the one who sings this? I could have cried, beautiful song beautifully sung!

  • to me too.but u spell my name mariya

  • i love this song. it's one of my favorite love songs :)

  • MY NAME IS MARIA! (: lol

everyone always sings this to me!

  • ES hermoso escuchar esta canción

  • Lol after hearing this i realize how much that performance that larry kert and carol lawrence did of tonight on some old tv show sucked... this is great

  • we've sung this song in our music lessons and I fell in love with this song <9 It's so beautiful =)

  • świetna wersja. dzisiaj juz nie śpiewa się tak prostych i prawdziwych piosenek.

  • Great music abd song!

    Larry Kert is absolutely wonderful.

    Moroulini, xronia polla !!! :o)

  • Timeless. Breathtaking. This is my favourite song from any musical and Kert's performance is among the bests.

I prefer this version with the song with the high A at the climax rather than the one with the Bb because I think the "i" sound rings out better than "a".

    It's just perfect.

  • Just great. You may know that Arthur Laurents despised the film version--both for way the songs were handled but mostly for moving them around into a different postion--especiall Office Krupke.

  • everytime i hear this song i wanna cry but also smile cause its so breathtaking beautiful.

    thank you for uploading this

  • Your Welcome

  • @xxBlackBryonyxx

when I saw this production in new york I was in tears when this song came on.

  • This is the Broadway recording, right? What's with images from the movie (in which Natalie Wood did NONE of the singing)

  • Because I chose too. I mentioned this specifically in the information box. Hope you enjoyed the video

  • Yes, the best version. The ONLY version. Thanks for posting.

  • Thank you for watching

  • the best version by far
