  • It cost over £150 including labour to fix - and thankfully Apple repaired it as a goodwill gesture as many of those MacBooks experienced the same problems.

The lesson? Purchase AppleCare for any Macintosh.

  • When I bought my MacBook at the end of September 2007, the guys I bought my computer from recommended AppleCare but did not indicate that it was absolutely necessary. I thoroughly recommend it.

In January 2009, the hard drive failed in my MacBook. The plastics also suffered from fatigue. The first genius told me that Apple would not cover the repair and I would have to replace the hard drive. The second genius told me Apple would cover the repair - Apple replaced the hard drive and upper case.

  • if i had this much problems with mac, i would have definitely given up on them.

  • I never have any problems with a HP laptop.

  • recently bought a brand new 13" MBP, and the Specialist dude was being such a dickless snob!!! he was very heavily criticizing me as to why I was opting to purchase the AppleCare at a later date!!! its like they think they are way better than you, and possessing a higher knowledge than you...

  • i hope they don't fire the people who are lenient

  • I have had my macbook for 2 years, during that time the dvd drive broke and I paid $125 to have it fixed.

  • Seems like you have some laptop issues. Should have gotten a unibody MacBook Pro. I love mine. I know what you mean with the laptop breaking and stuff but that is usually PC's more often than Mac's. I had a toshoba laptop that was in for service with the video card going up within 5 months. They said it wasn't in correctly. Like screwed in right and after that I went down hill.

  • In fact, my parents injerited two of my Sony laptops purchased 8 and 10 years ago...both are completely going strong and one of them needed a few keys replaced once, and that was it. That's all the "hardware" issues ever with my PC, and we're talking over 8 hours of use a day while I was using them.

  • Fabulous! I've owned countless computers...all laptops, since 1995...and the only ones that EVER had ANY hardware issues were Macs. In that time, the ONLY ones that ever crashed consistently..were macs. And I'm talking very consistently. PC's almost never crashed. And NEVER...EVER a hardware issue. Not even lack of drivers. So, this is interesting. That's why I hate Macs. They are meant to screw you.

  • This video was posted in 2007 - you still feel Apple Care is a good idea? Personally, I feel that Apple should warranty their products for longer. But they won't. Their products are NOT quality, as stated, so they don't dare warranty for longer. They are greedy - not sensible or consumer friendly - and charge outrageous prices for "official" repairs that any techie could fix for peanuts. The list goes on and on. Apple Care is an extended warranty that's pure profit and no confidence.

  • apple care is an honest waste of money...the damn thing should work for 3 years under good care....

  • @xenialvirtuoso what if you dropped it for being stupid...? or your screen gets dead pixels? or something fucks up

  • @ilovmc lol, in all honesty, if you're paying ~1 to 2k (which is a LOT of money) for a computer you should have the common sense to be careful with it. I've never experienced dead pixels...and parts on the laptops/desktops that i've owned never "fucked up". Sure it can happen, but I guess i've been lucked out! hahah

  • ok, so let me get this straight. Macs are better? yet you are proving there fault, Even to the point of recommending purchasing an extended warranty. You Apple fan boys are something else you know that...

  • apple suckin fucks

  • can i get it if i got it 2 months ago from best buy?

  • Just wait until something goes bad on it, then if it costs more than $250 buy Apple Care. Take that Apple :p

  • Applecare for laptops is big fucking joke. I have the black macbook model from 2008. Was spilled on it by accident. Not my fauilt. I was sleeping when it happened. I got applecare for it. For the computer to ever work again I paid $500 dollars at a discounted price from apple. Why buy a fucking warrenty when stuff like that is not covered. There is a solution. Best Buy sells macs and their warrenty covers everything. Applecare for laptops is a sad fucking joke. Same for their portable devices.

  • m'key

  • all that is because you've got laptop what about mac mini

  • with the crack on the macbook I had that happen to me twice both out of warranty and they fixed it for free because they finally claimed it as a design flaw. But now I have the 2010 macbook pro

  • MACBOOKS SUCK GET A PRO!

  • @ImGeoJustSayin The newer MacBooks do not have the same problems due to a different manufacturing process

  • I got cracks on both left and right of the laptop where my wrists are while typing, along the sides and at the top. it's only 2 and a bit years old and was a replacement for the last mac that broken out of warenty.

  • I own the same computer! For a computer that has some many issues, is it really worth it? Not only is it a major time waster when this happens, but if you don't scrap up for the apple care, you can't get the parts to fix it. Next computer will be a nice new ibm thinkpad :)

  • except in the first year its free.

  • yes wher i live you get alwais 2 year waranty if not you can chage them i live in belgium

  • I had the problwm with the crack below keyboard. Contacted my apple store and they said because it a design fault on apples part that they fix it for free even though i'm out of warranty (by 2 years!!!) as long as the macbook was brought less than 3 years ago. They weren't even bothered that I didn't have the receipt any more. They just checked the serial number for the purchase date.

  • lol, apple charges for phone support and then charges you for manufacturing defects.

Milking its customers for every penny

  • Only if you are out of warranty. 1 year for manufacturing defects, and 90 days for phone. With Applecare, it increases the length of your warranty for both to 3 years.

  • Don't bother if you're a smoker though. The slightest whiff of smoking and they refuse point blank to repair it. They say it is a bio-hazard. Don't get me wrong - I like Macs but my only Applecare experience has been far from satisfactory.

  • @alanstarkie2001 its true !

  • I don't have Apple Care and I call Apple every once and awhile with a problem and they have never asked me for a credit card or anything.

  • that info was quite tranquilizing :) If your mac crashes I do think most companies have some special legislation securing your hardware of anykind,. Here I know any hardware is secured in min. 2 yrs no matter what the company says. Within the 2 yrs limit they have to prove their machine was sound, they bear the burden of proof,

  • HEY!!!!

    I repair my own hardware:)

I built my computer with my own hands and therefore have no warranty holding me back.

  • Hey I had the same problem where i had like a chipping off spot and our local care sent it in to get repaired and they wanted to charge $800 and didn't repair it...

  • "Why You Should Buy AppleCare"

Or why you should by apple computers.

I've maintained the same basic pc for years without issues.

Whenever my specs get behind, I replace them.

  • I'm had by Powermac since 2001 no problems, it's a real work horse.

  • Are you able to upgrade the parts to keep them up with the modern systems?

  • Yup, in London there are plenty of second hand mac repair shops that have all the parts to buy individually. Macs aren't computers for hill-billy simpletons who live out in the countryside though, I'll give you that.

For how long have you maintained the same basic PC without having to replace all the parts?

  • "I've maintained the same (Basic) pc for years without issues." apple only requires so much care it's made to just beable to get on and browse send emails etc. not deal with the Bullshit! of updates and whatever else Bill Gates brings.

  • I also haven't updated in years... I still have xp, and it still works fine... no need for your bill gates updates :P

  • good for you...

  • yeah i have apple care they don't help at all they're a waste get your macbook from bestbuy and get the warranty there even if you have accidental damage they'll repair it free

  • Wow... Not being rude or anything but have you been using your laptop as a door stop?

  • i really love my macbook.

and the applecare is great :D

  • i've got the white apple intel imac...i was wondering if it was possible to upgrade my imac to the aluminum version with my warranty or would i just have to buy it?

  • Buy it. If you have warranty I am pretty sure they just fix it or give a new iMac G5. It would be cool if they gave you a brand new one though.

  • unless your whole computer just died with it being a hardware problem youd have to buy it, but they dont sell intel imacs ( the white ones) anymore in refurbished so theyd probably give you a new one if they could

  • Man, what do you do with you laptop! I've owned an iBook G4 for 5 years and have never had a single issue, except things that were my fault such as spilling liquid on the keyboard. But thankfully keyboard is easy to replace.

I'm about to buy a refurb white 2.0 GHz Macbook and don't plan on buying Apple Care. I seem to have good luck with laptops. Plus you can buy it at any time.

  • good video

  • I've just made the switch to Mac - purchased a Macbook 2.0GHz Aluminium yesterday at the online apple store.

The laptop I have now is a Dell Vostro 1500 and I've had soo many problems with it. So I decided to go ahead with purchasing the AppleCare with the Macbook (Which should arrive in a few days).

Luckily, I purchased the Macbook with an educational discount (£120 off) and that also gives you the 3 year AppleCare for £40 (£150 off!).

Just a heads up for UK students :)

  • my uncles mac cracked like twice because he picked it up by the edge with 1 hand and it cracked it

  • Wow...that sucks.

This really doesn't speak well of the quality of their products.

  • Okay, you have almost convinced me to get Apple Care. However, yours is a plastic one, do you think they fixed this stuff with the aluminum, I know that aluminum cannot crack like that, but how about the screen?

  • thanks DELL1032 seems like good advice on the laptop warranty.

  • i have a question i just dicovered a begining of a crack you can't even see it but im sure its a crack...can i go and exchange it for another macbook i just got it a week ago

  • you can return it and get a new one.... there is a 14 days return and exchange policy =D

  • oh thanks...... i just swaped it for a new one!

  • lori

  • I don't understand why do we have to pay state tax for that service when you buy it.

  • Hello, my friend,

I brought an Intel Core 2 Duo Mac Mini less than a year and since then, I had no problems, with it, it's not a refurbished model, I brought it bran new, it's the basic model machine, Combo Drive.

But Just in case, they is a problem with it after the first year of warranty, I purchased an Apple Care.

But a part from that, it's a wonderful little machine the Mac Mini is and has not given me any problems, I'm very very happy with it.

    Best regards...

    Sebastian Salmon

  • well its not about a macbook, but we have the airport extreme, which is about $220 and we had a hardware problem with it, so we went in and talked for about half an hour and eventually they just got a new one off the shelf and just gave it to us. our one year warranty was over about two months

  • macintosh is a leach for money.

brilliant equipment, but bloody hell how if a customer wants something fixed FIX IT!!!

    my screens cracked =)

  • my macbook pro got so hot that the metal started to warp on the corners. i was in the warranty. i called applecare and they sent me the box to send my computer saying it wasn't going to cost anything. i sent it, and a couple days later, the repair shop called and told me that the monitor was not connected to the base of the computer and that i will have to pay $1200 for a full repair. after about 4 hours on the phone saying that i never did that, i got them to reduce it to $600. after 6 hrs FREE

  • that cd thing i had with my new 2008 macbook its wierd...

  • i had apple care on my imac G5 ALS. Its four years old and apple care expired. the power supply broke. Apple is replacing it and the motherboard for FREE!!!! get apple care.

  • yeah only get an applecare when you buy your mac or else it is overprices. why pay so much for a warranty?

  • should i just buy the protection plan just before the 1 year warranty runs out so you get an extra year of warranty? Or just but it when i get my mac?

  • Read my posts right before yours hairnynathan. And it is an extra TWO years, not one.

  • One more thing: NEVER pay full-price for AppleCare... it is the one thing resellers DON'T have to sell at Apple's price! I got my $350 AppleCare on a MacBook Pro for $250, the list price of AppleCare for MacBook & MacBook Air. And those were even reduced! Glad I finally realized this. There is an authorized site that sells them at discount, so if your salesman won't discount, just tell him you're buying there -- he might match the price to make the sale!

  • I agree you should always consider AppleCare a must when purchasing a laptop, although you can wait up to a year to reduce your initial cost upon purchase. But there are many times things happen right AFTER the 3 years & you never get to use it. My iBook G4 (which I'm selling since I just bought a brand new MacBook Pro 2.53) has a bad fan which can be $150+ to replace. It started before my warranty expired but I was away & missed it!. They could've replaced my weak battery too. : (

  • getting macbook 2.1 ghz for x-mas, should i wait to get applecare or buy a week after x-mas

  • should i buy the protection before the 1 year protection expires? or should i buy it when i buy the product

  • I have the same problem with my drive. The genius says its normal I say thats crazy.

  • Apple care doesn't cover cosmetics though...

  • i wonder how many people have been watching a pornographic DVD on their macbook when its got stuck in the drive... i bet that'd be a laugh for the apple technicians.

  • Porn on DVD - so late 90s ;). Bittorrent, FTW.

  • lol. i forgot about that...no need to worry then ;)

  • @dell1032 Right, and no Mac owner would be caught dead doing something that's outdated.

  • @dell1032 LOL XD

  • I was a service technician for a seperate company not related to apple but PC"s and i can say its VERY common for computers to be packed full of porn and copied dvd's/trojans/virii its amazing :P lol

  • OMG THAT WOULD BE SOO FUNNY !!!! oran illegal CD or something

  • should i get a glossy screen? please help!

  • The matte screen is not only an option on the MacBook Pro. Personally I prefer the matte screen over the glossy screen - my iBook G4 went for 3 years without any problems with the display. My MacBook's glossy display had to go to Apple twice because the glossy coating kept flaking off. If I ever get a MacBook Pro, I'm getting the matte version, but maybe I'm just bad with displays. Hope that helps. Peace.

  • Keep in mind that these may be problems that apple will fix in production. Customer service is pretty good with apple.

  • I have a macbook too and have the crack you were talking about. I do have applecare. How long did it take apple to repair you crack in the macbook?

  • the same thing happened with mine the whole cracking prt thing

  • The laptop get 2 serious problem in one year. OMG, my two year old Acer laptop doesn't give me any problem. I am afraid of my Macbook give me problem someday. Apple's product sucks.... IF someday, Mac OS X can installed in PC illegally, i would not buy Mac at all.

  • You already can install OS X on a PC... idiot.

  • i know, i did before. I installed the Leopard on the PC beforei actually get the Macbook (For experience, and get used to Leopard). But the sound card just doesn't work. Therefore, install OS X on a PC without suppored from Apple isn't a good idea.

  • it's also illegal

  • I know it is illegal, but i just want have a experiment. The main reason i put Mac OS X on my PC is try Mac OS X out before i make the decision. I get ride of the Mac OS X after i get my Macbook.

  • i worry when a product has so many problems that you have already sent it for repais twice, and had to spend another 160 bucks in case it keeps breaking

  • i got applecare for free and an ipod touc for free with student discounts. :D

  • how???

  • look at their website

  • do you think its just as good of value to purchase the applecare for the macbook pro?

it doesn't have the plastic to break, and with the normal lcd screen you don't have to worry about the glossy finish.

Only problem is because its aluminum, could that mean repeairs would cost more?

its a tricky decision and $300 out of my pocket.

No matter what, I won't be able to get it when i get the macbook.

  • could i be able to buy the apple care after purchasing the macbook pro?

I am very interested in saving to get it, it is quite the big purchase, biggest i've ever made, and I want to get it as soon as possible.

Culd I wait a couple of months before I get the apple care? or do I have to get it when I get the laptop?

  • Based on what I know, your Apple Protection Plan must be purchased within one year from purchasing the Apple product.

  • I've had cracks that appeared after one year and Apple agreed to repair it for me for free. There have been so many cases they have heard of, that is what they agree to do now.

  • I sent mine in once only for the keyboard keys messed up. They replaced the top case it fixed it.

I got it in December 2006.

Good thing i got apple care. Sad thing was i bought it on the last day of my one year hardware. Talk about last minute.

  • The hard drive bay is on the other side of the machine - not that it matters.

  • No it is on the right side

  • ohh crud - yes you're totally right. I was thinking from the perspective I work on the machine from when servicing it. Sorry, my bad!

  • I was thinking the same thing from when I replaced my HDD!

  • hey you might have to spend some money on these things but look what your getting...YOUR GETTING A MAC!!!!!!!

  • and a fine one at that. ;)

its very expensive, but once you get it, you know how worth-it it was.

You don't get better then a mac.

I've never had one, and I know this. Vista is the worst OS known to man, Leopard would have to be the best.

  • hey do you think it is worth getting a macbook and paying more than getting a dell or some other kind of laptop for less money???

  • Depends on what you're looking for. Apple has pretty good customer service. Plus when you buy a mac you now can also run windows on it - so you will gain the ability to run Mac OS on top of everything else. Also the build quality of the Apple Machines is very high, you can tell when you take them apart. And if you get a refurbished mac - you'll save money and basically just lose the flashy box it ships in. I've heard a lot of recent horror stories with Dell, but I think they have some good stuff

  • I would recommend calling the AppleCare service and support line at 1-800-275-2273 and have them ship you a box instead going to the so called, " Genius Bar." My experience has been more like, "The egotistical Asshole Bar." Just tell Apple you can't get to an Apple store and they will ship you a box.

  • Yes it is.

  • Considering how expensive Macs are in the first place something like AppleCare should come standard :\

  • I bought an aluminum imac and I put in a blank DVD and it got stuck in it! Even weirder was that I installed an update and it wouldnt boot after i restarted! THE OPTICAL DRIVE JUST WHIRRED EVERY 5 SECONDS AND HUNG at a white screen! So I brought it into BestBuy and the Geek Squad looked at it and were stumped! So they gave me a new one and it was fine. Only one PC designed CD got stuck in the drive and it came out when I rebooted and held won the mouse button.

  • well, im sold. i wasnt going to buy the applecare with mine but now i will

  • I just bought apple care for my ipod classic....appleshit breaks so much...ipod classic is my last apple product..

  • ur just a careless retard i have had 3 ipods nd i haven't had any problems

  • Hmmm apple just emailed me back and said its their fault and there giving me a new ipod classic or there allowing me to pay 50$ for an itouch....hmmmm did i just shut you up?

  • it costs about the same to insure it agains theft and damage for three years, so isnt that the better option, its more likely that you will break it or have it stolen than it will go wrong?? Even if it goes wrong the insurance will cover that too

  • i bought my laptop without the apple care... can i get it close to the expiration of warranty

? does it activate after the first use?

    Thanx

  • hey how much do you think it would be if they fixed a disk player for my macbook? my cousin droped somthing on my keyboard and now my disk player is screwed

  • linux sucks

  • Linux sucks for the average user stupid geek

  • and by "stupid geek" you mean person smarter than me able to install a plug and play OS such as Ubuntu.

  • I can install Ubuntu. I have the CD with the disk image here. FAIL!

By stupid geek I mean those that think that they are the smartest people around when they are not. Linux IS NOT good for the average user because for some things you have to use the terminal and it has minimum software support. But it is a great OS. I have used it.

  • Yes, you're right...always factor in AppleCare into your final costs. There is wisdom to be had here. Double that if you treat it with less than perfect care.

  • I have had that problem with in 5 months with my macbook... I have had allot of the same problems with my macbook.Thank you for Apple Care. Im having allot of problems with my mag ac adapter its bends to much and is broken abit.

  • im in Canada, British Columbia and im considering purchasing a Macbook. What concerns me about the AppleCare warranty is... do I need to pay shipping costs to send it back to Apple? How much does this typically cost?

However, Shipping is free when ordering the laptop.

  • hm i read the applecare policy... found out that they cover shipping both ways..

But in your video, you said you got the dented plastic replaced. in the policy it says it does not cover cosmetic defects? did they lean into your favor just because of the possibility it will effect the harddrive?

  • Not 100% sure about Canada, but here in the US what'll happen is that Apple will send you out a pre-paid shipping carton, put your Mac in the box, and ship it back to Apple at no cost to you. That's how they swapped out an AC adapter I had for my iBook G4. I would read Canada's Terms of Service just to make sure.

  • When you sent your Macbook in how long did it take for you to get it back?, becuase i just sent my macbook in today.

  • 5 - 7 days if they have to send it to the repair depot. If they have the part at the store then usually it's a 24 hour turnaround.

  • if cd gets stuck again and cant get it out, go to terminal and type this command: drutil eject tray. This will forcefully eject the cd.

  • What mcbook is thatWhat year was it purchased? Applecare on Ebay is a lot cheaper but make sure the seller guarrantees its authentic or issue a refund?

  • Thank god I choose matte

  • The thing is that things like the cracking issue are widely-known defects, not things that you should really be thankful that you have AppleCare to fix... things that should make you regretful for buying the product in the first place. Don't get me wrong, I am obsessed with Macs, but they have some pretty ridiculous and inevitable defects that you should not have to insure yourself against.

  • get it at the end of the 1 year

    workss and saves money

  • does this work?

    like 1 year +3 year?

or would it be 1 year +2 year.

  • When you first buy your MacBook (pro) you will get 90 days of free phone support and 1 year warranty. If you by AppleCare you will get 3 years total of support and unlimited phone support. Hope this helps.

  • Thanks for the information, now I might get AppleCare when I buy my macbook...

  • Ya dude, mine started cracking at the bottom as well (most commonly known as Apple CrackBook). I was going to send it in, I don't have AppleCare, so I decided to go to Walmart and just put some white electrical tape. Now it doesn't look that bad and no more cracks.
