  • @ericthecarguy Not to be a smart ass but if it says only 4quarts y put 5?, They say too little or too much oil is bad. I just want to know because my car have 192,000 on it, and takes 4qts according to the manual. i put 4qts in but i buy an extra qt in case i burn some oil so i can top it off i dont pour 5qts in right away. AND WOUD SYNTHETIC OIL RUN FINE IN A HIGH MILEAGE CAR SUCH AS MINE?

  • I changed my oil but now its leakin...does anyone know what it might be?

  • 4.7 quarts is 150.4 ounces , 5 quarts is 160 ounces 9.6 ounces will not matter i don't know why honda didn't just say 5 quarts makes no sense to me.

  • @mailman7478 its all about being "precise" to professionals i guess.

  • and putting more than it needs is a Fail.

  • is the first 40 secs really necessary?

  • eric, i've always wondered what the difference is between brands of oil. often times, the bargain brand is $5-$8 less fof a five qt. have i been ripping myself off by buying name brand oil all these year?

  • you got me with your tuturials on your ability to train on easy objectives like changing your oil. You teach between the lines also which is very important. i am happy to have subscribed.

  • hey eric i live in IL and i use 10w40 full syntactic .... but as you know it gets very cold and very hot so should i stay with 10w40 or change to 5w30....and whats your opinion on seafoam and oil additives

  • Thanks this is helpful why don't yu be a teacher is an automotive school like WyoTech.

  • I am nearly about to "hate" this guy. I definitely don't like the way he speaks.

  • this was nice man, learn alot. good video.got it down to every detail:)

  • You must state that many vehicals is that their oil filters are very hard to get at. Found some on Jeep vehicles it is easier to get from top

  • Hi, great tutorial! why not to use ramps though? my driveway is a bit slanted and I thought of using ramps to level it out. Thanks.

  • hey eric how do you feel about cranking the car over to get the rest of the oil out? thanks

  • i thought you're suppose to put new oil on the oil filter gasket?

  • @CCaslopea yes you are

  • Your a great multhafucker;D

  • thank u very much...dis video was gr8..i hav learned alot

  • What does it mean when an oil filter comes lose a tiny bit enough to leak after 1000 miles?

  • Great job!!!!!

  • i like this guy.

  • excellent video, you covered everthing in good detail

  • Eric, what do you think about engine flush before doing an oil change? Supposed to clean all the crap inside the engine, I know it's not recommended for high mileage cars. (100,000)

  • can't you just throw the used oil into a bond fire???? =)

  • im driving an acura integra, idk why the RPM keeps going up and down when im stop at traffic or when i shift back to neutral. i have just done oil change and use 5w30 oil.

  • @ahahalmfao speed sensor

  • I've always been told to fill up the oil filter with oil before putting it on. Is this unnecessary?

  • how can you avoid air blocks!?!

  • if i use 5w 30 on my car which says 5w 20 on the oil cap is that okay? my civic ex 1.8L sohc works with the 5w 20 but the same type of car except the engine of the civic SI has a 2.0 sohc i-vtech takes 5w 30. this number just has to do with weather conditions in the particular place you live in the world correct?

  • Great video. Many thanks!

  • Very clear & good demonstration. Thanks Eric. I appreciat it.

  • Great video Eric, "DEAD PLANTS AND DINOSUARS AND SUCH" Lmao!

  • good vid there eric.

  • Omg the opening song :D I'ts pantera's I'm broken! you're great eric!

  • I run my old oil through a coffee filter than use it as oil on my drill press to lubricate the bit as I drill through metal.

  • "That's never a confidence builder..." LOL

  • If your car takes 4.7 qt why are you putting in 5 qt? Aren't you going to either blow a seal or damage your engine to start burning oil?

  • @Cowboyjlove No, that small amount is not going to make any difference or blow out any seals.

  • @EricTheCarGuy how much room do you have then, how much overfil will blow the headgasket etc

  • very good video.Thank you

  • @Cowboyjlove oil fiter

  • The manual for my ranger says 5w-30 oil, but its a 1994 and has 225k miles, should i use 5w-30 or keep the 10w-40 like ive been doing?, thanks in advance

  • @SmopuiM Especially in colder weather I would recommend sticking with the 5w30 that is called for.

  • thanks Eric this video is really helpful

  • @efonoti0409 Glad you liked it, thanks for the comment.

  • I was planing on doing the oil change on my car and this video was really informative. Thanks dude, great video, like all your other videos.

  • @Karburatorix Good luck and thanks for watching and for your comment.

  • when gravity takes over the van falls my head gets squished "life" would suck lmfao

  • im not sure what oil filter i use when i do this. not sure if it makes a difference with the car but i have a 2002 jeep liberty 3.7L so not sure what is the standard oil filter used on those.

  • @chrispuncher1 The oil type should be listed on the oil cap or in the owners manual. Where you get your parts should be able to get you the correct filter to use for your application. Good luck.

  • thanks. very helpful.

  • hi Eric,been a long time,don't u use engine flush?

  • @BigPython1986 No and if you change your oil regularly it's not necessary in my opinion.

  • I always use ramps (unless I'm taking the wheel off, of course.) at first I didn't want to because I thought putting the car (in my case, truck) at a angle would not drain all the oil out & it would make it where I overfill it and screw something up. Well, that's not the case! (Just a FYI, my driveway is at a slight angle, that's why I don't jack it up when I do a oil change) Thanks Eric, and what oil should I use? I always use synthetic and last time I used Mobil 1 and didn't have a problem.

  • @White03T4RV82WD That's a great tip, thanks for posting it.

  • with tranny and oil fluid i have also found it right on the dip stick, like my car i bought it never came with the owners manual

  • Thanks so much for this (and all your other vids). Your alternator diagnostics one in particular saved me some serious money....

Got an oil-related issue on my CRX. I keep getting an oil smell coming into the cabin, particularly in slow traffic or standstill. At first I thought it was a leak, but the car isn't burning any oil nor leaking any either.

Hope u can help. It's driving me nuts not being able to figure it out for a few months now!

  • @MrCreamyGoodnesss Check the exhaust as I often see even the smallest amount of oil there can cause an issue like that. It could also be a plastic bag or something that got caught on the exhaust, I've seen that a time or 2.

  • @EricTheCarGuy Thanks, will do. Now that I think about it, I remember way back getting a plastic bad caught on a Camry's exhaust, and that smelled bad for a while!

  • You should've also put some oil in the filter before screwing it back on.

  • @sadekasad That's a great point and I wish I would have put that in the video. Thanks for the comment.

  • Brilliant, my 2nd oil filter change and your video helped heaps. Pretty stoked with my efforts cheers for that

  • @missanigurl Well done, thanks for the comment.

  • nice video man i subscribed (y)

  • @shawnv898 Thank you!

  • ah! its the pole crawlin feller!!!

  • @backwoodsctryboy Yes it is, ladies and gentlemen, Scott Armstrong, friend and former coworker.

  • @EricTheCarGuy i am happy that you have friends in this business......i on the otherhand wouldnt pee on some people even if they were on fire.......thats sad to say......one bad apple ruins the whole sack......there are a handfull of people that i would give my last red cent too though.......those people are close friends and family.....they make life a lot less painfull......i think it was eric that said freedom is just another word for nothing left to loose.......gracias etcg

  • With that basic jack that I have to turn by hand that I have it can be used to lift up the front end

  • @sleepy1130 Not sure, it might.

  • I have a 96 lincoln town car. What kind of wrench you think I would need elf I haver a floor jack that I have to turn by hand I use for brakes and rotors. Would that be ok to use? How high should the car be off the ground I do have jack stands but would have to use one side at a time

  • @sleepy1130 Jack up the car from the front. Be sure to find a durable postion to lift the car safely. Install the two jack stands before getting under the car. You can use a standard open-end wrench or a socket wrench to loosen the drain bolt. Usually cars have a 17mm drain bolt. Your car could be different. If your unsure you can always check in the owners manual in the glove box of your vehicle.

  • @sleepy1130 I recommend resting the car on jack stands whenever you are going to work under the vehicle, I hope that answers your question.

  • good stuff. very useful video. Thanks Eric!

  • @binbin723 Glad you liked it, thanks for the comment.

  • Hey Eric, loved the video, I think it's going to really help me when I attempt it for my self this weekend, I was just wondering though, after you drain the oil and you take the filter off, is it a good idea to put something under the filter to catch any excess oil? And I've been told when you put the new filter on it's a good idea to fill it, if that's true how much oil should I put in the new filter?

  • @littlenicky648 It will fill itself, just screw the empty filter to where it is meant to be and fill the engine with new oil when the vehicle is flat and it will circulate through the system when you start it and dont forget to keep checking with the dipstick, try to go with having too little because you can always add more oil rather than having too much oil which is never a good thing either

  • @littlenicky648 Yes, add oil into the new filter. Just pour a generous amount of oil into the filter and be sure lubricate the rubber gasket ring on the edge of the filter. Also when doing an oil change be sure to pick up a new washer for the drain plug.

  • @littlenicky648 I wish I would have put filling the filter with oil before installing it as that is a good practice. Yes you should be prepared for more oil to come out when you remove the filter. Good luck.

  • Thanks very much that is super helpful for my thanks for all ur value time showing it how to change engine oil

  • @mkalam0004 I'm happy to hear the video helped. Thanks for the comment.

  • 17:30, throw that shit at people u dont like

  • hi eric, is it true that it's better to use 20w50 oil for realy old vans or should I stick to the manual (which i do)

  • @R4nD0mus3rNam3 I don't subscribe to that, always use what the manual tells you to use. Using incorrect oil can result in engine damage.

  • can you demonstrate fix a flat

  • @ssi678 Never, that stuff is dangerous and I've had friends hurt pretty bad by the stuff. They don't tell you to put that warning sticker on the tire for nothing. I have however done a video on plugging tires.

  • Is it just me, or does Eric sound just like James Hetfield of Metallica???

  • Hey Eric, When you go to take your old oil to a parts store that takes old oil, does it matter if the oil is in a bin just for automotive fluids or can it just be a bucket with a lid?

  • @13FravelJ I don't know, that would be up to where you take it.

  • Hey Eric, I have an 06 Ranger. I can change the oil easily. But the oil filter part is not so easy. I can get it off but the problem is that I think it is the starter is right below the filter. How can I keep the oil from getting on the starter?

  • @13FravelJ You could cover it with a piece of aluminum foil to help keep the oil from contaminating it. Just make sure to keep it away from the electrical connections.

  • @13FravelJ Wrap it in a plastic bag or a lot of tape.

  • @futboleroR10 couldnt I unbolt it and move it out of the way?

  • Thank you man this really helps i thought you were going to forget to tell us what to do with old oil lol. I already new but its nice to hear it again

  • @zuniga7alex I try to be thorough but sometimes I forget stuff, the public always reminds me though. Thanks for the comment.

  • I would add that it's important to avoid dripping oil on belts or hoses when you refill.

  • @xylenol15 Good point, thanks for the input.

  • Wow, thanks for the video! My husband passed away not long ago, and I am lost without him. He always took care of all that stuff. Thanks, I will see what I can do to my truck now. All by myself!

  • @1dreampainter I'm sorry to hear about your husband but I know you'll do just fine and who knows after this we may move you up to doing your next brake job. Good luck.

  • If you have a leak at the oil drain plug, can you use Teflon tape on the threads to help seal it?

  • @brandon804va No, that won't work you either need to repair the threads (which can put metal in the pan), replace the pan, or do what I show in this video.

  • @brandon804va good thought though

  • I'm Broken....

  • who makes walmart supertech

  • @backwoodsctryboy I'm not sure really but I know it's not Wallmart.

  • Comment removed

  • Great video. My vehicle has a cast aluminium sump pan with a torque setting for the drain plug.

Also, I prime the filter by turning the engine over with the plugs removed via a road wheel until there's a noticeable drop in oil level on the dipstick. It only takes a minute or two and feel it's a good idea which avoids running the engine for a period with no oil pressure.

  • @063209dr I wish I would have put that into this video, thanks for the tip.

  • Great show, Eric. I'm an automotive idiot but you make every thing look simple. With two vehicles I believe you saved me about $400 a year. I owe you a lunch :)

  • @nellievance I love saving people money and increasing their automotive understanding, this comment makes my day. I'll take you up on that lunch should I get the chance to meet you someday. Thanks for the comment.

  • @nellievance Yeah I am surprised at how many people take all their cars to a shop for a simple oil change, brakes or whatever else is easy to do.

  • Great videos as always.Props Eric.Very informative.

  • @Chills327 Glad you liked it, thanks for the comment.

  • Oh cool...Thanks Eric....

  • Hey Eric, Could u please post a video on "How to change a fuel filter in Honda Accord 1996".....Thanks

  • @mann4080 Don't bother, it's 'lifetime'.

  • Thanks for the great video! My 16 year old will be changing oil in our Town and Country for the first time…your video will be his reference. One question: is it easy to tell the oil plug from the transmission fluid plug…don’t want to make a costly mistake. Thanks again--jille

  • @jill66070 Most transmissions are filled through the dip stick tube so I don't think that will be an issue, normally the engine oil plug is marked as this one was so keep an eye out for that. Good luck.

  • hey eric Ive got a quick question.

My moms car seems to burn a lot of oil. ive switched to amsoil 5w30 and im using a K&N oil filter. The car just seems to feel "heavy" when i step on the gas, its not responsive and its just sluggish.

Is all of that burn oil being converted to black sluge???

  • @choi3ed Yes pretty much. It's imperative that you use the oil that is called for by the manufacturer either written on the oil cap or in the owners manual, I don't recommend you use anything else. I also don't recommend synthetics if you have an oil burning or oil leaking problem as it will leak faster with synthetic. Lastly do a compression test or better yet a leak down to see what kind of shape the engine is in as you may be fighting a loosing battle if the engine is worn out.

  • way better than my diesel's 15 quarts

  • @kendrickevans301 Yea those use a lot of oil. Thanks for the comment.

  • hey eric me again been a while i had a accident at work and i have loss memory now i cant remember alot of mech stuff anyway do you have or can you do a serpentine belt with issues like chrips and squels and how to fix the chrips and pre tension pulley on a gm 3800 v6 buick cheers:(

  • @fastvpbt1 I've actually done a serp belt video if you want to check it out, it's part of the BBB series. Sorry to hear about your accident, hope your doing better.

  • awesome editing eric

  • @kendrickevans301 Thank you.

  • I have a couple questions. Is it better to do an oil change while the car is Hot or Cold, and another thing I used ramps. Are they good to use if the oil drain plug is on the side of the pan.

  • @arios211 Using ramps is not a problem really so long as you don't end up draining the oil onto the ramp instead of a pan. It really depends on what time of year it is, if it's cold outside then it's a good idea to warm the engine first to speed the process of draining it out but in warmer weather this usually isn't a problem.

  • Hi Eric

Regarding oil changes i took my car to a family member who removed the oil filler cap prior to removing the oil pan nut, is this nessasery?

    Thanks

  • @offspringy No, it really doesn't do anything as the crank case is vented to the air cleaner assembly anyway via the PCV system. With transmissions it's a different story however, I always pull the dip stick on those to get the oil to come out better.

  • Dude, your voice is the same voice from the game Deer Hunter 2

  • @TehBerbDean I didn't know that, where's my royalty check?!

  • PLZ make a vid on how to install a cold air intake any bmw PLZ

  • @ballstowallsdimian1 You must understand that I make videos on what comes into my shop so unless the same car comes in with the same request I can't fill your request. I'll just say off the bat that I don't see too many BMW's at the shop and most people that want cold air intakes do it themselves. Good luck.

  • @EricTheCarGuy

i understand and thanks a lot i learn a lot about cars from your vids keep it up ;)

  • Eric, what is your favorite oil that you use or would use in your own vehicles?

  • @NETWizzJbirk This is my vehicle in this video, I use oil with the latest API rating on it that is affordable, I change it about every 4K and after years of doing it this way I haven't had any problems.

  • hi Eric, I did an oil change today, started draining from the bottom, and then I went up to unscrew the oil filter, and the bastard didn't budge... since I had to use the car, I let it stay up there, and poured in the new oil. I ordered one of those oil filter removal tools from ebay so I'll take another shot when it arrives... Should I repeat the entire process with new oil? Is the oil I've put in today already badly contaminated with junk? Or is it fine if I just replace the filter? Thanks!

  • @DragsterNFS No, I think you could just swap the filter out and be just fin. You might consider filling it with a little oil before you install it however.

  • my manual says to use either 5w30 or 10w30. i live in texas. which is better?

  • @AGreedyTree They normally give temp ratings as well, given that you are in a warm climate I would go for 10W30 in summer and 5W30 in winter.

  • @aeligos I would use a gasket as it would still be serviceable after you do the replacement, if you use silicone then you will have a mess to clean up if you had to remove the pan again. You should have no trouble reusing the bolts.

  • ive seen some people fill the oil filter with oil should i do that or not?

  • @wink19828 It's a very good idea and I wish I would have put it into this video.

  • Hey Eric, I have been struggling with my few for the past six months but after seeing a few videos.... Problem solve!!! My question is, What is the difference between Syntectic Oil and the regular one?

  • @jorgejh90 Regular is oil that is refined from the stuff that comes out of the ground, synthetic is a man made blend that works like oil but is not. Most synthetics however are a blend of synthetic and regular oil. Thanks for the comment.

  • hey eric , love the show and the website , i have a bunch of questions for you . I drive a 1994 Ford Mondeo , european . It has about 170.000 km and normally i use 10w40 oil . This summer i want to give my car a makeover so all the filters will be changed , all liquids and necessary parts . So do you think i should use different oil , regarding my mileage or just keep with this one ? Also how do you feel about injector cleaners , are they any good ? Thanx a lot

  • @GrimmBeat I think you should stick with the oil recommended by the manufacturer, you can actually do damage by not using the correct oil. Good luck and thank you for your comment.

  • been checking out the internet and im getting mixed opinions on weather or not i could go from using synthetic motor oil for oil changes to non synthetic. cause i picked up a case of oil for half the cost of the synthetic. being that i like your videos i would also value your opinion on this topic. thanks

  • @dungeonhack420 In truth most synthetics are blends of regular oil and synthetic so by design they are made to mix together just fine. My issue with synthetics is that most people don't need them and if you have a high mileage car you may end up making any oil leaks you have worse by using synthetics because they tend to have different flow characteristics that have a tendency to slip past where regular oil will not. The real benefit is being able to extend your oil change interval.

  • @EricTheCarGuy thanks dude, just what i wanted to hear. Looks like im doing an oil change tomorrow after i get off work.

  • That rubber gasket you were talking about from the old oil filter stayed on when i did the oil change in the dark once. At first I thought I didnt tighten it hard enough. If only I watched this video first haha.

  • @daricebowl I too know about that gasket from a similar experience. Live and learn I suppose, thanks for the comment.

  • you talked on disposing of the oil but what about the filter?

  • @NDOGG26 I normally take them and tip them upright into my catch pan overnight and then throw them away, that way most of the oil is out before I put it in the trash. I believe there are places that take them for recycling however you might want to check to see what is available locally for that.

  • I do have to admit that I still enjoy watching this video even though I seen it back when you 1st uploaded it as a 2 part video. Great stuff.

  • @Michiganborn1969 It's different when you can watch it all the way though. Thanks for the comment.

  • hey eric i know this questions basic but when should i check my oil? when the engines running or after its been sitting for a while. (97 Acura CL 3.0)

  • @imthechandyman You normally get the most accurate reading first thing in the morning before you start it but the point is to check it, that is the important thing.

  • Hey Eric tomorrow I'm going to change my own oil myself I found out that its cheaper to do it yourself when you have to use high miles oil... love your videos I've learn alot th

  • @annapolisslim Glad you like them, thanks for the comment.

  • Gah dont use Metric tools on standard bolts... great way to strip the heads

  • @1ownjoo2 Good point.

  • @1ownjoo2 Aren't there some some some cases where the metric/standard do line up in measurements? And at times, one fits tighter than another? I'm NOT recommending to try it out or whatever, I'm saying this out of sheer curiousity. 5/32 = 3.96875 mm.

  • @peelout40

Metric can fit standard this video shows that, but what im saying is because metric isnt square like standard the small teeth on metric tools can wear the corner out on the standard bolt so its best not to use metric for anything standard. Epsecially tight bolts like lug nuts, or something that needs to be torqued

  • @1ownjoo2 That plug is not a 'standard' size, it really is 17mm just like all Honda's.

  • @EricTheCarGuy

Oh well it looked standard to me. Oh well lol
