Most Beautiful. I am so grateful for some LDS music WRITTEN for a Viola and not a rework from violin!!! This Viola player, Heather King, has such a haunting and wistful sound. Wonderful composition!
@violagal11 Haha I play violin and so I am happy that most music is easily found for my instrument, however my younger brother plays viola, so he has a hard time finding music made specifically for viola. Either way, this music is beautiful...that so many great LDS and other hymns can be found on YouTube is a blessing!
do you guys realize Kolob is the starbase that Elohiem is supposed to live on, right? Like, that is legitament doctrine you all beleive and are told about in the temple ceremony.
@ih8makinusernames Yeah... soooo. I believe Jesus Christ died and was resurrected from the grave 3 days later that I might live again. I'm sure people think that is silly as well, but it is true. But if you understand LDS theology it's really not that absurd. I know that it is all true because I have prayed and asked my Heavenly Father if it is true and through the quiet reassurance of the Holy Spirit it has been revealed to me.
@pvthansen1234 So essentially you're telling me you sat down already believing the biblical story of Jesus was true, asked the great sky king if it was true, and he answered you by "giving you that special feeling". No Angels, only Jospeh Smith is special enough for that, just a "feeling". Because your preconcieved notions totally wouldn't effect you percieving "a feeling" that it's all true. Faith is for those who have no proof of anything.
@ih8makinusernames. Have you ever read the Bible or the Book of Mormon? I'd invite you to read them or even pray to your father in heaven because I know he is there. I have faith that he is there and I have seen miracles happen because of that faith. Trust him and see. But other than that, belittling my faith isn't actually going to drag me away from anything although you can try. I've seen my religion strengthen my family and blessed my life more than Atheism ever has or will.
@ih8makinusernames You've obviously seen that ridiculous God-Makers cartoon. The addition of "starbase" was a nice touch to make us sound insane. We are told in the scriptures that the star nearest to the planet upon which God lives is named Kolob. That isn't mentioned once in the temple. Being "children" of God, it's not so crazy to think He lives on a planet as well. Where else? He isn't a misty floating cloud out in space. Accuracy is something you won't find from anti-mormons bent on hate.
@billysunerson ...I like how you think anything you said just made you sound any less crazy. So this isnt crazy? A bunch of Israelites can go to America and half turn into Indians and genocide EVERY SINGLE white one and then change their genome from a one typical of Jews to one typical of a race decendant from East Asians, they then proceed to erase any and all records that would allude to any link at all to Isreal including: Architecture, Language, Culture, Clothing, Ethnicity, Writing etc.
uhh does this song have lyrics? or is it purely instramental? the melody is so familiar it's driving me crazy thinking where i've heard it before ... someone please help!
Just one thing im confused about... what is the difference between the 3 degrees of glory? Are they the same as the celestial, terrestrial, and telestial realms?
This has always been a favorite hymn of mine. I've been in the church for a while now and I've never heard the explanations given. I think people don't sing it because it was originally a lot harder to sing until the text was placed with an easier tune written by Ralph Vaughn Williams. Also, susum07 and anyone else interested, the website mormon.org will give you a good introduction to who we are and new.lds, org is the official site where you can find more on what we believe.
Probably my favorite version (so far) of this hymn. Absolutely love it, and the spirit it brings into me! This has got to be one of my favorite hymns of all time!
Thanks you, Ricky, for such a celestial piece of music :D
@0d12m23 Kolob is a a word that we Latter Day Saints to denote the place where God resides. Adam-ondi-Ahman is a name we use to denote the place that Adam and Eve moved to after they were cast out of Eden. If you could Hie to Kolob and Adam-ondi-Ahman are two LDS hymns that we use from time to time. The authors of the hymns used well known tunes from the UK to sing their lyrics to.
@susumu07 Kolob is the star that is in closet proximity to where Heavenly Father resides, he doesn't live on Kolob like many think, but it's a star...not a planet.
So according to Mormon belief (by the way, which book is this in?) where exactly does heavenly father reside? In empty space somewhere near Kolob, or on a star or on a planet orbiting Kolob?
FYI, I'm not a hater or an anti-Mormon, I'm genuinely curious because Mormons I knew never talked about Kolob, and because my beliefs about God are nothing like this.
@susumu07 Kolob is talked about in Abraham, chapter 3. Abraham is in The Pearl of Great Price.
Here's a link to the LDS/Mormon Church's online version (right off of the Church's website :D )
scriptures (dot) lds (dot) org/en/pgp/contents [Note: replace " (dot) " with a " . " ]
Hope YouTube doesn't mess this up >.<
Oh! And while you're in the Pearl of Great Price, read the Joseph Smith History. I promise you will find answers to some of your questions if you read it and ponder the writings!
@20PhantomRegiment09 Heavenly Father is in the the Celestial Kingdom, Which nobody knows what it looks like or where it is, we just know that Kolob is closest to it...We don't sing this song much in my ward simply because the idea of "Kolob" makes non-LDS people think the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints is a science fiction alien cult, which it isn't...
But isn't your ward all Mormons non Mormons aren't allowed into the building? so why would non-LDS people even hear the song if you sing it in your ward? I'm confused, is the ward a building, or is it an actual area of church jurisdiction (sort of like a diocese for Catholics)?
@susumu07 Wards are the local meeting houses (There is missions (smallest), Branches, and Wards) and all are welcome to the local meeting houses. You must be thinking of the temples, which only a subset of Mormons are allowed to enter.
So if I visit a Ward, what can I expect to see? Are there a lot of Mormons always visiting, or only at certain times? I mean are the hymns only sung in worship services? and are non-Mormons allowed to attend the worship services?
I just find it bizarre that someone would fear singing this hymn in front of non-Mormons, it only mentions Kolob once, and basically it's nothing more "weird" than the Mormons' reference to a place in or near 'heaven' (or so I've heard...)
First off, all people are welcome to come visit the local ward, best to visit on sunday and go to the service to get your feet wet, though there are other programs on other days that you would be welcome to go to.
The main service they sing about 3-4 songs, and in some sunday schools they sing more hymns.
Sorry for the double-reply, ran out of letters. Why some Mormons would feel odd singing this in front of Non-Mormons is that it is a song that celebrates the unique aspects of our faith. That, and Kolob and polygamy are the two things that Mormons are belittled on by some.
Ok I get it. Yeah there's a lot of hate from ignorant people who don't even WANT to understand beliefs other than their own. I always get hit with the same kind of lame retarded insults about polygamy, abrogation, the Kaaba and all this distorted media hype about "holy war", "victory mosques" and 72 virgins, so trust me I know where you're coming from.
All the same it's the most beautiful Mormon tune of them all IMO, even if I don't agree with the lyrics. Peace.
@susumu07 Well, non-LDS people can attend sacrament meeting at an LDS meeting house, however non-LDS people cannot enter the temple, any LDS person must have a temple recommend card to get into the temple, but the meeting house is open to all. a "Ward" is an area of Church jurisdiction that all meets at the same time, for example the Fort Worth Texas ward is my ward in which all Latter-Day Saints from that ward go to sacrament meeting at the same time in one group.
Ok. I get the part about the Temple needing the reccomends. But what goes on in the sacrament meetings at the ward? What is the actual sacrament in the sacrament meeting (or is there more than one, or is the term used metaphorically?)
@susumu07 LDS Sunday service is 3 hours long, sacrament meeting is where a loaf of bread is broken for the "sacrament" and we listen to the bishop make announcements and we cote on ward business, after that we go to sunday school and study scriptures, after that men attend priesthood and women attend relief society.
@susumu07 Priesthood is ordination by the means of laying on of hands, the officiator will ordain a man with the power of the priesthood so that he can receive his temple endowment. Relief Society teaches women the importance of servitude to her husband and how she can become a better person through her faith.
Hmmm.... I think relief society, at least in concept, is something Western society definitely needs, it sounds very beneficial. As well as societies that were westernized against their will. Things like argumentative wives, gold-diggers and the legalized robbery of the "feminist" divorce industry just plain suck and are destroying the American family.
As for priesthood... what happens in that meeting if that particular day there is nobody scheduled to be ordained?
@susumu07 In that case we hold a scripture devotional...we will either study the Doctrine and Covenants or have some individual conference with the Ward Bishop if we have any concerns or questions.
@susumu07 It has alot of stuff Church history, three degrees of glory and so on...If you want to know more you can read it from the LDS church's website.
@susumu07 The Doctrine and Covenants is a book of modern scripture. Most of the doctines explained in it came as revelations to the early prophets (particularly Joseph Smith) of the Church in answer to their prayers when they had questions about the gospel.
@susumu07 LDS Sunday service is 3 hours long, sacrament meeting is where a loaf of bread is broken for the "sacrament" and we listen to the bishop make announcements and we vote on ward business, after that we go to sunday school and study scriptures, after that men attend priesthood and women attend relief society.
