First officer was handling the approach, but Captain made the decision of retracting flaps, and CSD co-ordinated the evacutation(3 people injured out of 168) so TEAM WORK!!stupid tittle
@iggymateuk - Does glide ratio mean anything to you? The flaps are increasing drag therefore reducing the distance that a plane can travel without it's engines running. WITH flaps extended you glide less but at a lower sink rate, and with the flaps Retracted you glide further, but at a higher sink rate. Therefore given the circumstances, they needed to clear the runway lights which were in the way, trading vertical speed for distance. if they hit the runway lights they would all be dead now.
@iggymateuk retard much? retracting flaps allowed the aircraft to extend the range of flight, meaning they made it over the perimeter fence and crash-landed just short of the runway threshold. retracting flaps was what saved the aircraft.
The Captain did not freeze. He just decided to let the co-pilot land because he was doing a good job during the situation. He saved the plane and everyone else because he changed the flaps from 30 to 25. Without him the crash would have been a lot worse and everyone would have died. The media made out that he did nothing because he had a contract with BAl to not say anything till the investigation had took place. If anything people should have been praising him not trying to make him look bad.
the first oficer was handling to aproach anyway as had been agreed before and the captain judged it dangerous to take over which was in my view the best decision with the time they had to respond.
@skog13 Not true. The 1st officer was the handling pilot, the captains made moved the flaps from 30 to 25, meaning the lane dropped quicker, but glided futher. Enabling the plane to clear the fence and landing lights. They were both doing the job, and between them saved the lives of all aboard. They are both hero's in my book! : )
It was a combination of the pilot and the aircraft technology that saved everybody. THe sheer strength on this airplane is likely what saved everybody combined with pilot actions but you have to be real and realize that they only control a machine. THe landing gear on the 777 is known as one of the strongests ever developed along with the a380s. if this had been a dc10 it happened to the chances are the results would of been alot different. the impact on grass would have reduced alot of enrgy
"Ahhhhh...errrrr...hmmm, the auto-throttle system seems to behaving oddly, I can't get the engines to respond to manual throttles commands, we are loosing speed rapidly and the rate of decent has gone through the floor... You have control, minimums!"

BA is holding back the truth from the public, why didnt the pilot give testimony as to what actually transpired?why is the focus being shifted to "excellent team work" as opposed to trying to figure out what caused the crash. The plane ran out of fuel and had been soaring for a while. If it had lost power on final approach the pilots coud have kept up air speed even without power and safely landed.
is possible,do your research,,,you find here on youtube,an aircraft investigations video of the BA 747 that had four engines failure!possible!if it had run out of fuel, the info would be kept in the flight director(info dysplayed in the middle LCD screen of the 777fd)and the black box,and if they didnt have enough, they would have priority to land, instead of fly on a holding circuit before landing!flight crew wold lose their licenses over that
right!lets see,a frozen ATPL(airline pilots licence)costs £71,800 at OAT(the best school)+living costs of training, total of £100k,+get a job on B777 with BA,200 a year out of 6000 applications,+who investigate such incidents are INDEPENDENT bodies, now would u as father of 3 like this captain, jeopardise your career so hard to earn, and lie regarding such a serious incident?
If you can walk away, it is a good landing! Pilots do this all the time, nobody dies and the Media forgets it..

Why does he refer to the crew as a "team". Everyone has to "improve" description sell by invoking sports.

"I have control" means, pilot takes command of the aeroplane, which is what you do when issues occur.
You do not retract flaps! that is the reason why they ended up with the landing gears over the wings, too much vertical speed.

If they didn't run out of fuel then why didn't the plane go in flames? theres an answer.
lewisduncan93 3 years ago
lol unlikely it ran out of fuel. they put on extra fuel just incase they have to hold in a holding pattern or divert because of bad weather or other.

anyways it was skil

Considering their was a huge fuel leak when the plane finally came to a stop, it's very unlikely that it had run out of fuel

Please think before you post such ignorant crap. Today they have said that ice in the fuel caused both engines to lose power.
Possel47 3 years ago 5
@Possel47 Thats correct,it was ice that formed on a non heated part of the fuel filters, causing them to block.
