  • Brilliant, Brilliant Cam. Good speed - got everything. Meade Lux would have loved it - God bless him

  • Hello, I really liked this song ... compliments. I was wondering if you could send me the score ..

    Thanks:)

  • great work on honky tonk. can you do a tutorial like boogie woogie stomp,

    please.

  • I have watched this since you uploaded it on You Tube and I still think Meade Lux Lewis and Keith Emerson would think this is pretty darn good work. Way to go.

  • Meade will not turn around in his grave!

  • PERFECT!

  • BRAVO! Superbly played. Old, long gone Meade "Lux" Read will be happy with that performance!

    Well done!

  • mooi,simple,zat,meer,niet,wauw

  • This is badass, especially considering this is the first recorded Boogie Woogie track of all time, at least that is recognized.

  • very good job, congrats!!!

  • Thanks!

  • excellent prforming and excellent taste in style! but I confess I prefer the Emerson's cover over the origiginal :D

  • when I was a kid my uncle used to play this for me because I was mad about trains

brings back great memories, haven't heard it for about fifty five years, many thanks

  • Brilliantly played and I love the sound of your piano :D

  • blahh omg all i can hear is that damn repeating left hand, play some damn real piano like one of rachmaninoffs preludes dammit!

  • can i have the sheet music for this?

  • C'est super joué , quel plaisir et le son du piano à un petit côté d'époque boogie/ragtime

  • Sensas et le son du piano à un petit côté d'époque

  • bravo

  • ricordo della mia adoloscenza

  • Knockout !!

  • OMG this one sounds so much like the version played by Emerson Lake and Palmer! (which is mye fav. version, as it was the first one I ever heard) Gotta Loooove this! :D Great work!

  • Way better than Keith Emerson's version! Did you use the transcription from Boogie Woogie Press? As far as the critics below- PLEASE: you have plenty of improv in your version! The song was written by a guy mimicking the El going past his home in Chicago- not too much room for improv as it is. Once again nice job, Cam!

  • but at 1.33 you mistake left hands rythmn... as many of us do

  • Fantastic -It's amazing that people can actually watch this fabulous song being played Live - By The Masters -mead Lux Louis -Albert Ammons-Pete Johnson..

  • this is a good way to learn it

you play very clear and the cam shows a good view

if you have any more boogies to show us like this .

    please do!!!!

  • Stunning . . . .in the words of Jeff Spicoli, "Awesome . . Totally Awesome".

  • Awesome -Fantastic Playing Cheers

  • Heavens to Murgatroid! If you were any more cool, you'd be frozen! Strictly from wowsville, daddy-o! An absolutely dynamite version of my all time favorite boogie woogie number! KUDOS, young man! Please keep up the good work! You've made my day & my week! :)

  • Great stuff!

Sounds very much like the original played by Meade Lux Lewis.

How about making a lesson for this song also:-)?

Do you master the 'Blue Note Boogie' as well?

  • R. Crumb.

  • It is always my fantasy to sit down at a party and play this piece - and thanks to this video I can pretend on my 'air piano'- wow- it almost looks possible!

  • Hey nice performance!

BUT WHERES THE IMPROVISATION!!!!! ITS BLUES NOT CLASSICAL!! :)

  • MUSLIMS ARE GAY

    encore bravo

    j attends d autres songs

    fred from france

  • Played with total interest and involvement. Nice version, Cam, it rolls right along.

& as noted, good camera angle.

    Keep firing!

  • Oh yeah. And this is the very song that got me kicked out of piano lessons. LOL! I always played by ear and picked this darn thing out by playing the record over and over again. My teacher was against jazz completely. After a lesson one day, just for fun I played this for her and she told me never to come back. LOL!

  • ALL RIGHT!!!! Somebody that actually plays the damn thing right! I can still play that. Of course as you get older and that carpal tunnel sets in you have to modify that left hand bass. LOL! FANTASTIC! Glad to see SOMEBODY trying to keep it original. KUDOS!

  • Hi Cam,

Thanks for taking the time to look at my videos. I've been watching yours ever since I discovered You Tube. I never made any comments until I had some of mine up and running but this is a great version and I can see what you're doing too!

Superb. It could be Meade Lux himself.

  • this is fucking amazing;>

  • A tremendous performance of this evocative piece of music.A feast for the ear and the eye.Thank you Cam for the clip.

  • What key is this in???

  • G major ;)

  • you are so good but your piano ....

  • lol thanks! :) ...aww i like my old piano :(

  • Did you cut and paste videos? It looks like there is a spot at 1:54 where your right hand magically jumps. However, in watching it over and over I cannot tell. It just seems a little strange. If I only listen to it, I notice no gap.

    Regardless, good job!

  • Yeah I did cut and paste a part...I didn't like how I played after that point so I did it again...I am a bit of a perfectionist!! :s

  • very well. Compliments from Italy.:D

  • oh, i see i've never commented on it ... well, as you know, i think it's fantastic !!!

  • Haha thanks Arturo!! How are you by the way?

    Cam :)

  • fine, thanks. You ? well, i've been really busy, so no improvements about piano .. however i'll send you a video as soon as possible .. bye !

  • very compliments!!!

but at 1:06 the tempo is incorrect...

    but very very compliments!!

  • Hey thanks...yeah I tried to syncopate the rhythm like Meade Lux Lewis does in the original, but...I'm not quite as skillful as him lol!! :P

  • Awesome Cam ! :D 5 stars defo

  • Hey there Lasse! Thanks mate :D

How are you by the way?? How was the UK festival? I'm so sad I couldn't come :(

    Cam

  • Amazing performance!!!

I'm learning this one at the moment.

If I didn't watch the video and just listened to the audio I could mistake it for Lewis himself!

  • Wow! Thank you so much that's a big thing to say!! :D

Good luck with learning it...post a vid when you're done :P

  • OK will do... just out of interest, did you learn these by ear or from sheet music?

  • I learned this one by sheet music...but Swannee River Boogie was by ear...

  • your technique is amazing!x

  • Thanks! :)

  • love it =D

  • now that's talent

  • WOW! The parlophone version! I used to play the Victor version. Wears your left hand out doesn't it? I learned this was I was 12 and freaked out my piano teacher. With right hand you are playing 9 notes at some points. I actually learned it by putting the original 78 on a record player on the piano bench and picking it out note for note until I foundthe sheet music years later. Still one of my favorite songs. Very well done!

  • Thanks!

Yeah the parlophone version's good isn't it :)

WOW that is a good effort! learning off a 78!! And I thought a cd player was hard!!! :s

  • You are so good!! Could you send me Sheet Music from this song, please? :-)

  • This is the best version I have ever heard - I play by ear but have not been successful in duplicating Honky Tonk Train. Could you send me a copy of the sheet music - need the bass notes. Also do you have a lesson on how to do you version. Michael Cochrane

  • xyz - test

  • greeeat job

  • I like your version the best of the ones I have heard on Youtube. That left hand keeps driving, and there's plenty of interest in the right hand. Great stuff.

  • Thanks! :D yeah its probably one of the trickiest pieces for me! :s

    It's a great piece though, I like it! :)

    Cam

  • You inspired me to go get the sheet music You have improved on the original - have downloaded all the other versions out there - yours is the best and most authentic sound. I dont know how any one does slides or slures with the 32nd notes. You posted a lesson on how to play the Bomber. Would you please, post a lesson playing the opening "A" part of Honky Tonk Train

Would be very greatfull. All my collection is 100 year old ragtime and thats all I know how to play.

    Michael Cochrane

  • Hi Michael,

thanks so much for your compliments! :) I will do a lesson as soon as I get back into making video's. It's been tough lately...just been moving house and am now practicing madly for an audition to get into a Bachelor of Jazz at VCA or Monash University! :)

But it will definately be one of my first vids when i get back into it..

    Cam :)

  • Absolutely love your version of this. REally enjoyable. Many thanks for posting.

  • Why thank you! :D

  • Sounds very much like the original.

You have stayed with the left hand chord

changes, great stuff i love it.

  • Thanks Joe ;)

Yeah it's a pretty difficult left hand for me :s

  • Wow! Play this one myself but not as well as that! Love the odd embellishment you've added. Superb.

  • Thanks mate! :D

Glad you like it! Why dont you upload some vids of yourself playing??

  • Thank you, I appreciate your feedback - thats definately how I tried to make it :D

  • could you show me some lessons of this track, please? Because it seems to me that you are quite professional. :-)

  • Hey thanks! I'll try to get a lesson up around christmas time. A few people have asked about that..

  • Nice cam =)

  • Thanks mate ;)

  • Thank you! :) It's an old Bluthner upright around 100 years old.

I haven't heard of Kemble before, how old is it?

    Cam

  • do you play all of these by ear? or do you have music?

  • I play mostly by ear but use sheet music sometimes to work out hard chords

  • Ok read your page and see its a Bluthner :)

  • Yeah thanks I love my piano too :)

It actually sort of got given to me by my aunt who got it from my grandfather. It's just by chance that it sounds good for boogie :)

  • Wonderful. Love your piano also. Did you buy it with boogie in mind. What type is it. It sounds perfect.

  • Superb rendition.

    Thank you for sharing.

  • Damn fine effort! If you want to hear what I reckon is the definitive version, check out the (rare) album 'The Blues: A Real Summit Meeting', and check out Lloyd Glenn's version!

  • Thanks mate! :D

I've tried looking for a sample of Lloyd Glenn's version but cannot find one...I'll keep looking though!

    Thanks,

    Cam :)

  • You are a new Keith Emerson...bravo!

  • Lol thanks!! Yeah I love Keith's version he plays it very well :D

    Cam :)

  • LOVED ITT!

  • Thanks! :D

  • Trust me if I do, I will! I havn't done any gigs before but would love to get into it :D I'm just a bit short of time at the moment with university and all :(

I might go to a blues jam or something soon

    Cam :)

  • Wow, I'm very impressed. The timing is so perfect!

  • Thanks!

I actually thought I sped up a couple of times but I'm happy you like it :D

    Cam :)

  • That is so good, I'm off to the piano to practice some more! :)

  • Lol...thanks!

Good on you...practice makes perfect, don't stop! :D

    Cam :)

  • Just had to revisit one of my favourites! Which one are you practising these days, Cam? Do you have any gigs lined up? If not - scour the coast for jazzy bars, I'm sure you'll land a gig!

  • Lol really pleased you like it! :D

I'm trying to learn Sweet Patooty at the moment...not getting much of a chance to even play piano at the moment :( my engineering course is keeping me very busy!

I can't really do any gigs at the moment because i dont have a portable piano!...I've actually just started looking for one. I'm trying to find one with the best feel & sound (don't need all the bells & whistles)

I would love to start playing for people though!

    Cam :)

  • i'd recommend a kawai. they have great touch, great sound, and theyre portable. about $900

  • Thanks for the reply mate, but I've already bought a Roland - it suited my style better.

The Kawai was very nice though - very cheap for a great piano!

  • ah rolands just as good anyway. how much did you pay for it?

  • umm about &3500 AUD

  • how does AUD compare to USD? more or less?

  • about 80 cents AUD to $1 USD

    So about $2900 USD

However the reccomended retail price was about $5000AUD...I got a good deal :)

  • this is going into my favorites. you are talented!

  • Thanks..glad you liked it :)

  • Currently i'm searching notes from fats waller.

to learn Waller's music by listening is quite difficult Do you know where to find some notes of him?

  • Can you tell me the name of this song. You have modificated the honky tonk train blues? This is different. What's its name? You are great.

  • Thanks :)

It's still Honky Tonk Train Blues by Meade Lux Lewis...he did many different recordings of the same song.

This is the November 21, 1935, Parlaphone Recording.

  • Respect! Do you play also ragtime or only boogie woogie?
