@plantsman01 I don't think it is pointless to try. Give it a show and see what happens. Diploid with diploid and tetraploid with tetraploid crosses will result in higher number of germinating seeds but crossing a tetraploid with a diploid is possible, you will probably end up with fewer seeds you can sow.
@Rominitte Sow the seeds right after the seed pods opens. They don't stay fresh for very long. I have a couple of posts at the blog linked in the video description about sowing the seeds. Check them out if you have time.
can you pollinate amaryllis with the flower's own pollen? or do you have to cross pollinate it? i've heard that self-pollination causes mutants/defective plants.
You can pollinate most of the with their own pollen and it will not cause mutations. Although, some Amaryllis are not self-fertile so you need pollen from another.
Nice video.

Hello Mr Brownthumb. I have a question to maybe you can anwser it.
I work at a botanical garden and there we grow some botanical species of Hippastrum to.
At the moment a very beautifull one is blooming. H. yungacensis.
I selfed it as it is pretty rare but I also would like to use the pollen to make a hybrid with a big flowered commercial hybrid.
Now I've heard that most big Hybrids are tetraploid. So do you think it is pointles to try?
Thanks

Thanks!
I have a fruit that's almost ripen, and I'm trying to sow some from last year.
When this fruit is ripe i'll sow it! :)
