  • OH MARK.......Maybe the most brilliant and attentive of us are just really not hardwired to endure the mediocrity of ''reality''.....once we've ''looked across the veil''....stepped across that sublime threshold of a different world....it's really difficult to come back and ''be casual, as one must''. What a precious gift your music is to me, even though I never discovered it in your lifetime.....what else can be said.....run fast and free.....

  • This song made me think about everything I have either lost or found over the years. Im only 18 but i can really picture this as an ending song to a emotional movie. This song would be the perfect ending song to anything. we all must dream for lightyears in the belly of a mountain. I have moved a lot but this song makes me think of the mountains in colorado. just looking at them around sunset, cool air breeze, and the girl you love beside you. This song is god :)

  • Apparently this is what the lead member of the band heard when he got into an accident and literally died for a few minutes before being brought back to life by the doctors. He tried to transcribe the "music" he heard while dead and that's what he got :)

  • I only started getting into Sparklehorse's stuff recently (through Guy Maddin's video for "It's a Wonderful Life", oddly enough; I'm a pretty big Maddin nut), and everything I've heard so far has been nothing short of phenomenal. It's a such a shame that an obvious genius such as Mark found himself with no other way out except suicide. May he rest in peace, for surely he has earned that much.

  • This kinda sounds like Minecraft music... in a really nice way... It's a beautiful song.

  • There are some really good posts here. This song really hit me once when I was driving out of my hometown. I grew up in a town of 3000 people in the Midwest and did not return for about a year after college. After spending some time there and then leaving again everything just hit me during this song.

  • @boigende Welcome! ^_^ Music helps open nostalgia.

  • i've had sex to this song (itunes was on shuffle), and it changed my whole perspective on sex and making love, I felt really strange during and afterwards, like how could I be with someone in the closest way imaginable but feel so lonely at the same time.

I know it's probably a bit inappropriate but thought i'd just share.

  • @TheTomWIlliams I get what you mean and it's not inappropriate. It's profound. Everyone interprets art differently. When I listen to it, I can view the world in pessimistic yet dreamy state and almost be ok with each and every one of our fates.

  • @TheTomWIlliams Thank you for sharing ^_^

  • @TheTomWIlliams

et tu man..it was beautiful, closest to a transcendent connection with a girl i had..well we were also high but it just added to this whole dreamy love making.had it on loop..23min man..fuking sublime.i felt like end of something magical when we finished, just lay there and listened to it..i dont think i'll ever experience love making so spiritually close to it again.

  • @TheTomWIlliams you make love so sad ?? :))

  • so sad... and so beautiful

  • This song makes me feel like I'm alone in space, in a broken spaceship, drifting deeper and deeper into space. I have excepted my fate and I'm gazing out at the shrinking Earth.

  • @basilbottler that was beautiful said my friend ^_^

  • @basilbottler Exactly.

  • @basilbottler for me.your comment captured this song..thank you,cheers

  • The Youtube Community hasn't failed me. over 50 likes and no dislikes. :)

  • this is what an ambient masterpiece sounds like. why is this getting so few views while all the crap and wanna-be's out there are getting the acclaims and fame?

  • @movoning because all of us dreamers and thinkers like to explore new things with or without the fame. we like to stay on the outside and away from the controlled media. a place where people like us can listen to great music without commercialism and merchandise being crammed down our throats. if no one wants to open their minds a little, then so be it. you're missing out. there's a lot of great unknown artists out there...you just gotta listen ^_^

  • This song makes me want to meet Mark, and at the same time gives me some hope for better life.

  • This is too beautiful for words :)

  • It's hard to listen to this sometimes

  • @mattrg320 why so? i'm studying for a exam with this and it's so relaxing.

  • i was camping out on chesil beach in dorset, early hours camp fire glowing and sound of wood crackling clear sky stars making me feel free to ponder the actions of my life the sea washing gently on to the shingle and pulling away peebles like lost souls, this tune that i had never heard before played and transfixed me to somewhere deep inside of me but laying there out in the open i felt scared but not afraid if that makes any sense, for that time i felt small, humbled and it pleased me.weird.

  • thank you so much for posting this song. it is my favorite Sparklehorse song. @phdhbtdsmmm i love putting this song on loop at night time but your story is just beautiful i'll def. have to take this track with me next time i go camping.

  • This is the first time I have been able to listen to any of his music since his passing. Still really hard but, his work came full circle. I am just glad he let us (as fans) in his circle while he was around.

  • Mountains don't have bellies either. There doesn't need to be a literal meaning for you to understand. There's nothing to figure out. Just listen.

  • Light year is not a measure of time ;(

  • @HerInfernalFluffines

Very true. I'm not sure why Linkous did it the way he did, maybe that's not what he meant, who knows. A light year is a measurement or unit of distance showing how fast light travels and whatna. A "Julian Year" is a measurement of time. I like the sound of light year though.

  • @bennude10

It could be a theroy of relativity. Think about it A light Year is a measurement of distance...distance takes time to travel across...therefore, his time spent is his travels across the light year have been spent in the belly of a mountain. Just a thought but knowing how some people like to reference things of a greater scale to show emphasis apon feelings it could work.

  • @bennude10 i was under the impression that one light year was how long it would take an object travelling the speed of light to make that distance, or something. lol space is so confusing... probably the bigger part of why it's so fascinating. to me, anyway. can't speak for everyone

  • @nrchyintheuk 'A light year is the distance that light travels in a vacuum in one year (365 days)', yeah man you're about right, lol. I don't know much either, but that is why I love space; deep and complex. If you wanna learn and understand more about the universe you gotta watch Carl Sagan's stuff, which you can find here on youtube. He'll teach you way better than I can, ha!

  • @bennude10 that's actually a good idea, thanks for the reference!

  • @nrchyintheuk your welcome :D

  • @HerInfernalFluffines Ever heard of poetic licence? Or word play? Or existential thought? Nope? Numbass.

  • @HerInfernalFluffines a Light Year as un a peaceful, calm year.

  • Sooooooo sad :( :( :( :(

  • I listened to this song whilst camping out on my own in the Welsh Mountains.

I put it on loop, and I laid down watching the stars above me. I must have laid there for 6 hours without moving a muscle... just watching the odd meteor, or satellite passing overhead and seeing the constellations slowly rising and setting.

If you want to know what it is like dreaming for light years in the belly of a mountain - try it.

Thanks for that memory, Mark. Sorry you couldn't make it all the way.

  • thank you for sharing your memory. I do that all the time as well. Love looking at the stars.

  • i don't know where you are from but you're simply wonderful, i love what you said and feel very close to it

  • i think you're wonderful

  • @phdhbtdsmmm i love you

  • @phdhbtdsmmm mithycal

  • @phdhbtdsmmm ooohh

  • :-) Thanks! :-)

  • @phdhbtdsmmm This reminds me of when i was ten and i found myself lost, alone and panicked on a ski slope with the night creeping in. Eventually, something about the eerily serene presence of my surroundings sedated me. I remember sitting down in the stillness of the void and trying to imagine what it would be like to exist eternally. The longer I lingered in this presence, the more I felt that I could spend eternity there, allowing my mind to tread the unlimited expanses of the unknown in awe.

  • It makes me cry now. RIP Mark.

  • I'm gonna miss him too...

  • it is beautiful

  • it almost feels more than beautiful ^_^

  • thank you

  • Your welcome ^_^

  • You're welcome.

  • Something about this song is so sad so beautiful and eerie at the same time absolutely genius, Thank you for posting!

  • Your very welcome. I couldn't agree with you more.

  • this is song is absolutely beautiful
